3 Meet: Thomas Roth-Berghofer Professor Artificial Intelligence (AI) Thomas Roth-Berghofer is Professor of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and leads the Centre for Intelligent Computing (CIC) at UWL. As Head of Research and Research Training Thomas is responsible for the development of research capacity and for the School s PhD students. He studied computer science at the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, gaining his MSc and PhD. He has worked in software industry for several years and as Senior Researcher at the German Research Centre for AI. In his research Thomas focuses on aspects of smarter communication with personalised computing systems, giving them abilities to explain their reasoning processes. Those abilities can substantially affect their usability and acceptance. The CIC works on developing respective methodologies and tools under the heading explanation-aware computing. Thomas s research is accompanied by teaching undergraduate and graduate students. Practical courses and exercises accompany his lectures and have proved a successful way of attracting and preparing students for applied research work. 162
