4 1 INTRODUCTION This document details the installation and administration of the NBC News Learn External Tool for Desire to Learn Learning management system. Desire to Learn Administrators should refer to this guide to facilitate the configuration and management of the NBC News Learn External Tool/Remote plugins to ensure proper installation and functionality. 1.1 Product Overview NBC News offers unique collections of video resources, primary source documents, historic footage, images and mini-documentaries designed for use in the classroom. The NBC News Learn External Tool enables subscriber institutions to enhance classroom learning by adding NBC News resources in their D2L courses. The NBC News Learn External Tool seamlessly integrates with your current D2L installation and enables instructors to embed NBC content into existing courses for course delivery. For students, NBC News Learn is a valuable research tool and unique study aid. 1.2 Prerequisites In order to get started in NBC News Learn, you will need: A signed End User License Agreement (EULA) between your institution and NBC Universal. Your NBC News Learn Consumer Key/Shared Secret from NBC Universal. An operational test or production D2L system. Technical knowledge of D2L environment settings, and External Tool installation. To Configure the NBC News Learn External Tool you will need to be the D2L system administrator or a Couse Curriculum designer with privileges for External Tools Configuration. 1.3 Customer Support Technical Support is available from the following: Via the web at Direct by Phone: (877) NBC-7502 (please have your consumer key / Subscription Token available)

5 2 INSTALLATION The NBC News Learn can be installed /Configured as a LTI External Tool in D2L. External Learning Tool Configuration 1. Log into Desire to Learn as Administrator. 2. Click ok the Settings icon at the top right and Click on the External Learning tools link. 3. Click on the New Link to create a link for External LTI tool. 4. Enter the Title, URL and description for the tool. Note : Launch URL for NBC Learn is

6 5. Make sure you have enabled the tool visible to the users by checking the Allow users to view this Link checkbox. 6. Enter the consumer key/ Secret provided to you in the activation Make sure the Security Settings are all checked.

7 8. Assign the new created remote plugin to the desired Org Units and descendants. 9. Click on save to finish the External tool configuration. 2.1 Insert Stuff Remote Plugin Configuration NOTE: Insert Stuff Remote plugin is only available in Desire2Learn version 10.3 and up. 1. Log into Desire to Learn as Administrator. 2. Click ok the Settings icon at the top right and Click on the Remote Plugins link.

8 3. Click on the New Remote Plugin to create a Remote Plugin. 4. From the plugin type dropdown select ISF 5. Enter Launch point, secret. Key for the remote plugin as provided in the activation sent by NBC Learn. Note : Launch URL for NBC Learn is

9 6. Enter the name, description and url for the NBC icon ( 7. Assign the new created remote plugin to the desired Org Units and descendants. 10. Click on save to finish the Remote Plugin configuration.

10 3 Configuration Verification Once you have configured/installed NBC Learn External tool follow steps below to validate if the installation was successful. 3.1 External Learning tool Configuration Verification 1. Add the external tool as activity in your course. 2. Click on Browse NBC Learn link and it will open NBC Learn Site within an IFrame :

11 3. Navigate to any collection on the left hand side or search for the related and try to play a video: 4. If you see video playing full length and embed code is visible, then it an indication that your subscription is configured correctly and successfully activated. 3.2 ISF Remote Plugin Configuration Verification 1. Click on the New > Create a File option inside your module. 2. Click on the Insert Stuff button in the HTML editor menu bar.
