2 o Molecular dynamics. Object-oriented virtual environments for collaborative product design and visualization of mechanical and aerospace systems. General Summary Dr. Wasfy s two main research areas are: (1) computational mechanics (for modeling complex multibody systems such as full-ground vehicles that can include multiple model scales and multiple solution fields such as fluid-structure interaction); (2) application of virtual-reality, multimedia and artificial-intelligence to engineering and e-learning. Dr. Wasfy developed state-of-the-art software tools related to those research areas that are commercialized by Advanced Science and Automation Corp., a company that he founded in In computational mechanics Dr. Wasfy developed accurate and robust techniques for modeling: beam, shell and solid type flexible bodies; rigid bodies; kinematic joints; frictional contact (including contact detection); compressible & incompressible fluid flow; free-surface fluid flow; and fluid-structure interaction. Dr. Wasfy applied those modeling techniques to many practical applications including: tracked/wheeled ground vehicles; tanker trucks; automotive and industrial belt-drives; and large articulated space structures. Current Projects 1. Time accurate modeling of flexible multibody dynamics coupled with fluid flow with applications to: a. Fixed wing airplanes including wing flutter and flow around the landing gear. b. Rotorcrafts (rotor/drive-train dynamics coupled with fluid-flow around the rotor). c. Flapping wing airplanes. d.
