1 Republic Polytechnic School of Information and Communications C352 Management Information Systems Module Curriculum This document addresses the content related abilities, with reference to the module. Abilities of thinking, learning, problem solving, and teamwork, communication, debating and defending are addressed by the system wide curricular practices at the institute. In this module, students will learn the fundamental concepts of information systems, and how information systems and the underlying technologies serve the business. Students will also learn the different types of information needs and the issues relating to information system ethics & security. Module Objectives Upon completing this module, students should be able to: Understand why businesses need information technology, and describe how modern enterprises use information systems to meet business needs and to create competitive advantage. Describe how key enterprise applications (ERP, CRM, SCM, etc) and application systems (decision support systems, business intelligence, transaction processing systems, etc) support the respective business units and functions. Recognise the key issues related to management of information systems, such as budgeting, purchase or outsource strategies, information security and ethical issues. Following are the content related abilities strengthened by the curricular processes of the module: Information Needs and Recognize the need and usefulness of information for the operation of business Identify the different information needs of different levels of management within an organization Explain and illustrate the different components of an information system the IPOS model Describe and explain how organizations use hardware, software, data, and networks as resources to perform input, processing, output, storage to transform raw data into information. Examine and analyze how businesses uses the Internet to achieve business objectives Classify the different online payment systems and determine appropriate payment options. Describe and explain the difference between corporate Intranets and Extranets and demonstrate their respective implementations. Enterprise

2 Recognize how Enterprise serve the needs of businesses or business units Analyze the information needs of management and how information systems decision support systems might aid in the decision making process Examine and explain how IT and the Internet have enabled start-ups and established enterprises to create new ways of doing business Identify, analyse business requirements and propose designs of possible information systems solutions to business problems or opportunities. Management Evaluate and differentiate the different frameworks available for IT planning and demonstrate how it is used in planning for an IS system Select and justify the choice of developing an IS system build, purchase or outsource Identify the key issues related to management of information systems Module Assessment This module is assessed as follows: Daily Grade 50% Understanding Tests -50 %

3 Module Synopsis In this module, students will learn the fundamental concepts of information systems, and how information systems and the underlying technologies are used to gain competitive advantage in businesses. Students will also learn the different types of information needs and the issues relating to information system ethics & security.
