1 ACSA100 In 2012, ACSA will celebrate 100 years of advancing critical issues facing architectural education. The organization has planned four major projects surrounding the centennial: an engaging scholarly anthology on the profession s evolution, edited by Joan Ockman; an online exhibition that will focus on architecture schools contributions to their communities; a theme issue of the Journal of Architectural Education, which will give ACSA members the opportunity to contribute to the discourse generated by our centennial; and finally ACSA s 100th Annual Meeting, hosted by founding member, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. ACSA recognizes that this anniversary comes at a challenging time in our profession. However, we believe that these projects are an important part of helping the public understand the importance of architecture as we reflect and look to the future. Widespread support from grants, sponsorships, and individual contributions especially from our schools are a testament to the enthusiasm surrounding this milestone. 2 ACSA100: Exhibit ARCHIVE100.org, is a digital platform that will host faculty and student projects so that people outside the architecture community can experience the energy of architecture schools. Guest curators will review the submitted work for special recognition, participants can show their work as an online portfolio, and people outside of architecture can discover the relevance, diversity, and breadth of architecture as a discipline and culture. Currently the project exists as the ARCHIVE DROPBOX, a growing database of student and faculty work that will eventually include browse, search and discussion capabilities to offer an online space to the existing community of students, faculty and administrators. In March 2012 ARCHIVE will relaunch with both curated stories and user-generated content to engage three types of audiences: individuals, particularly those in under-represented groups, who might achieve their fullest potential by attending architecture school; members of the public who are interested in learning more about what architecture schools and graduates have to offer; and current members of the architecture community, including students, academics, and professionals. 3 ACSA100: Book As the centerpiece of the centennial, ACSA and MIT Press will publish, in March 2012, the first comprehensive scholarly history of architectural education in North America. Edited by Joan Ockman, a renown architectural historian and educator, Architecture School: Three Centuries of Educating Architects in North America will be a generously illustrated volume containing invited contributions by three dozen distinguished historians, leading educators, and younger scholars. 4 ACSA and Data The ACSA Atlas is a data collection project to examine architectural education and practice across five general statistical contexts demography, profession (incorporating both education and practice), culture, environment, and economy. The Atlas will explore several specific data sets within these general contexts, including material that might help us better understand the future demand for architectural education, i.e. the relationship between the current recession, unemployment statistics, enrollment, rates of graduation, K-12 demographic projections, job growth, and application pools. The first infographics, designed by award-winning design firm MGMT, were published online in March 2011 and benefited from the support and contributions of the collteral organizations. ACSA has asked for feedback to decide what statistics we should collect next. What kind of data do schools need? It is a free reference for prospective students, graduate students, educators, administrators, counselors, and practitioners. 6 ACSA Conferences June 16-18, 2011 New York City 2011 ACSA Teachers Seminar, Performative Practices: Architecture and Engineering in the 21st Century This year s seminar focuses on the new practices emerging from partnerships of architects, engineers, and others that blur disciplinary boundaries and advance new techniques in design and construction. October 6-8, 2011 Houston, TX 2011 ACSA Southeast Fall Conference, Local Identities / Global Challenges This conference will explore the influence of culture, context, and technology on design. November 9-11, 2011 Hollywood, CA ACSA Administrators Conference Old School/New School This year s conference will highlight efforts at schools to accelerate changes in educational models in light of dramatic changes in global, national and regional economies, demographics, regulation, and technology. March 1-4, 2012 Boston, MA ACSA 100th Annual Meeting Digital Aptitudes This Annual Meeting culminates the events associated with ACSA 100. To mark such an occasion, the conference will critically examine the ground covered by the discipline since its inception, as well as speculate on its future trajectory, the central theme of the conference being the profound impact of digital technologies computational and communication capacities on architecture. Visit ACSA Competitions ACSA, along with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and Howard University, will hold a two-stage Haiti Ideas Challenge, focusing on providing permanent solutions to the rebuilding of infrastructure, cities, neighborhoods and structures for residents of Haiti affected by the recent catastrophic natural disaster. ACSA will also partner with the American Institute of Steel Construction for the 11th ACSA Steel Student Design Competition to create a Homeless Assistance Center.
