Two teaching areas - students must choose a first and second teaching area. Students will be qualified to teach to HSC level in both areas. a. First teaching area students must choose a first teaching area from the table below. This first teaching area will determine the Bachelor of Arts major. First or Second Teaching Areas Aboriginal b. Second teaching area students must choose a second teaching area from either the table above or the table below. Second Teaching Areas Business Studies/Commerce** Classical Hebrew and Judaism Geography TESOL # Mathematics Related Bachelor of Arts Major Industrial Relations & Human Resource Management^ Hebrew (Classical)^ Geography^ Linguistics^ OR English OR a language Mathematics^ 2. Bachelor of Arts major students must complete a Bachelor of Arts major that will relate to the first teaching area. Students may also complete an additional Bachelor of Arts major that will relate to the second teaching area, but this is not compulsory. *Students selecting Ancient History as a first teaching area CANNOT undertake Modern History as a second teaching area and vice versa. ** Students selecting Commerce/Economics as a first teaching area CANNOT undertake Commerce/Business Studies as a second teaching area. # TESOL is also available to students as a third teaching area option in fifth year. Students must have completed at least four units of English and/or linguistics and/or a language to undertake TESOL. % Aboriginal Studies is also available to students as a third teaching area option in fifth year. Students must have completed at least four units of Indigenous Australian Studies to undertake Aboriginal Studies. ^ Available as a second major only
2 COURSE STRUCTURE GRID The table below details all of the units of study required to complete the degree, and the order in which they must be completed. The shaded boxes indicate all Education units of study. The white boxes indicate units of study undertaken in Arts, Science and Business. NB: this grid is to be used as a guide only and is subject to change throughout the course of the degree. 2 of 16
3 GLOSSARY Bachelor of Arts major Students must complete 36 senior (2000/3000-level) credit points in the nominated area to obtain a Bachelor of Arts major. The Arts major must relate to the first teaching area. Completing a second major is possible and this must relate to the second teaching area. Teaching Areas Junior unit Intermediate unit (Faculty of Science & Business School only) Senior unit (Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences & Faculty of Science & Business School) Cross-Listed unit Choose from list above. Students must have two. unit of study at 1000 level (eg ENGL1002, HSTY1076) unit of study at 2000 level (ECON2385, MATH2590) unit of study at 2000 or 3000 level (Eg. ENGL3057, JPNS2004, HSTY2304) unit that is run by a school or department outside the major department that may be counted towards that major. 3 of 16
4 ABORIGINAL STUDIES First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): students must complete a major (6 senior (2000/3000- level) units) in Indigenous Studies and complete units as listed below in years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the degree. Second Teaching area: students must complete the units as listed below in years 1 and 2 of the degree. Students must complete the following units: INDG1001 Introduction to Indigenous Cultures (Sem 1) INDG1002 Introduction to Indigenous History (Sem 2) KOCR2603 Indigenous Health and Communities (Sem 1) INDG2002 Indigenous Art and Culture (Sem 2) YEAR 3 TWO senior (2000/3000-level) units of study in Indigenous Studies (KOCR or INDG)^ YEAR 4 TWO senior (2000/3000-level) units of study in Indigenous Studies (KOCR or INDG)^ ^ A maximum of THREE of these units can be cross-listed units. 5 CLASSICAL HEBREW AND JUDAISM First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): Classical Hebrew and Judaism is NOT available as a first teaching area. Second Teaching area: students must complete the units as listed below in years 1 and 2 of the degree. Jewish Civilisation, Thought and Culture It is recommended, in addition to the compulsory units listed below, that students complete some senior (2000-level) units of study in Jewish Civilisation, Thought and Culture (JCTC). This study can be completed in year five^. 6 COMMERCE / BUSINESS STUDIES *STUDENTS CANNOT TAKE BUSINESS STUDIES IN CONJUNCTION WITH ECONOMICS/COMMERCE* First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): Commerce/Business Studies is NOT available as a first teaching area. Second Teaching area: students must complete the units as listed below in years 1 and 2 of the degree. Students must complete the following unit: BUSS1030 Accounting, Business and Society* (Sem 1 or Sem 2) *Please note: this unit of study is taught by the Sydney Business School and is very demanding. All students are highly recommended to register for Peer-Assisted Study Sessions for extra support. 8 DRAMA First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): complete a MAJOR in Performance Studies and undertake units as listed below in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the degree. Second Teaching area: complete the units as listed below in years 1, 2 of the degree. Students must complete the following unit: PRFM1601 Performance: Process and Collaboration (Sem 1) PRFM1602 Dangerous Performances (Sem 2) NB: it is recommended (but not mandatory) that students complete the following units: EDGU1001 Creativity, Youth Culture and the Arts (Sem 1) EDGU1002 Youth and Digital Culture (Sem 2) Students must complete the following core units: PRFM2601 Being There: Theories of Performance (Sem 1) PRFM2602 Performance: Production and Interpretation (Sem 2) YEAR 3 TWO senior (2000/3000-level) units in Performance Studies (PRFM)^ YEAR 4 TWO senior (2000/3000-level) units in Performance Studies (PRFM)^ ^ ONE of these senior units must be at 3000-level in order to meet the requirements for a Performance Studies major. 9 ENGLISH First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): complete a MAJOR in English OR Australian Literature and undertake units as listed below in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the degree. Second Teaching Area: complete the units as listed below in years 1 and 2 of the degree. Literature-based units: First Teaching Area students must complete a minimum of SIX literature-based units. Second Teaching Area students MUST complete a minimum of FOUR literature-based units. Students must complete the following literature-based units: ENGL1002 Narratives of Romance and Adventure (Sem 1) ENGL1026 Constructing the Fictive Self (Sem 1) ENGL1012 The Gothic Imagination (Sem 2) PLEASE NOTE: The following unit is NOT a literature-based unit: ENGL1011 Introduction to Film Studies (Sem 2) TWO senior (2000/3000-level) literature-based units in English (ENGL) or Australian Literature (ASLT)^ YEAR 3 TWO senior (2000/3000-level) literature-based units in English (ENGL) or Australian Literature (ASLT)^ YEAR 4 TWO senior (2000/3000-level) literature-based units in English (ENGL) or Australian Literature (ASLT)^ PLEASE NOTE: The following units are NOT literature-based units: ENGL2666 Creative Writing: Theory and Practice ENGL2653 Western Theories of Language ENGL3633 Introduction to Old English Linguistics: students may complete ONE unit of study in Linguistics (LNGS) in year 4, provided that six literaturebased units have already been completed. ^ To complete a major in English, students must complete at least THREE senior (2000/3000-level) units in English (ENGL), with at least one unit at 3000-level. 10 GEOGRAPHY First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): Geography is NOT available as a first teaching area. Second Teaching area: students must complete the units as listed below in years 1 and 2 of the degree. 11 HISTORY (ANCIENT) First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): students must complete a MAJOR in Ancient History and complete units as listed below in years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the degree. Second Teaching area: students must complete the units as listed below in years 1 and 2 of the degree. Students must complete ONE of the following ancient history units: ANHS1600 Foundations for Ancient Greece (Sem 1) ANHS1601 Foundations for Ancient Rome (Sem 2) ANHS1602 Greek and Roman Myth (Sem 2) and ONE of the following archaeology units: ARCA1000 Early Humans: Hunters and Farmers (Sem 1) ARCA1001 Ancient Civilisations (Sem 2) TWO senior (2000/3000-level) units in Ancient History (ANHS)^ YEAR 3 TWO senior (2000/3000-level) units in Ancient History (ANHS)^ YEAR 4 TWO senior (2000/3000-level) cross-listed units in History (HSTY)* ^ ONE of these senior units must be at 3000-level in order to meet the requirements for an Ancient History major. *Students MUST complete TWO cross-listed units from History (HSTY) in year 4. 12 HISTORY (MODERN) First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): students must complete a MAJOR in History and complete units as listed below in years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the degree. Second Teaching area: students must complete units as listed below in year 1 and 2 of the degree. Units required for teacher accreditation To achieve teacher accreditation, students MUST complete at least ONE unit that explores the nature of contact history in the context of Aboriginal and indigenous peoples of the world: o HSTY1089 Australia: Conflict and Transformation at least ONE of the following units that explores key features and issues of periods of peace and conflict in the 20 th century: o HSTY1044 Twentieth-Century Europe o HSTY1076 American History from Lincoln to Obama Students must complete the following unit: HSTY1089 Australia: Conflict and Transformation (Sem 2) and the following: ONE junior (1000-level) unit in History (HSTY) TWO senior (2000/3000-level) units in History (HSTY) YEAR 3 TWO senior (2000/3000-level) units in History (HSTY)^ YEAR 4 TWO senior (2000/3000-level) cross-listed units in Ancient History (ANHS)* ^ ONE of these senior units must be at 3000-level in order to meet the requirements for a History major. *Students MUST complete TWO cross-listed units from Ancient History (ANHS) in year 4. 13 LANGUAGES First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): students must complete a MAJOR in a Language and complete units as listed below in years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the degree. The major must include at least FOUR language units (not culture units). Second Teaching area: students must complete units as listed below in year 1 and 2 of the degree. ALL of these units must be language units (not culture units). Languages available: Arabic Chinese (Mandarin) French German Greek (Modern) Hebrew (Modern) Indonesian Italian Japanese Korean Latin Spanish It is possible to have two languages as the teaching areas ( double languages ). Eg. 14 MATHEMATICS First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): Mathematics is NOT available as a first teaching area. Second Teaching area: students must complete the units as listed below in years 1 and 2 of the degree. Students who have completed HSC Mathematics Extension 2 (4-unit) or equivalent may wish to complete Advanced Mathematics units of study and should seek advice from the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Students who have completed HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (3-unit) or equivalent, should complete FOUR of the following units: MATH1001 Differential Calculus (Sem 1) MATH1002 Linear Algebra (Sem 1) MATH1003 Integral Calculus and Modeling (Sem 2) MATH1004 Discrete Mathematics (Sem 2) MATH1005 Statistics (Sem 2) Students who have completed 2-unit Mathematics or equivalent should complete FOUR of the following units: MATH1011 Applications of Calculus (Sem 1) MATH1015 Biostatistics (Sem 1) MATH1013 Mathematical Modelling (Sem 2) MATH1014 Introduction to Linear Algebra (Sem 2) MATH1004 Discrete Mathematics (Sem 2) Please note students should aim to achieve a CREDIT (65.0 or above) in MATH1011 and MATH1013 in order to prepare for Year 2 Mathematics units of study that involve higher calculus. Students who have completed General Mathematics or equivalent must seek special permission to complete the following unit: MATH1111 Introduction to Calculus (Sem 1) and TWO of the following units: MATH1004 Discrete Mathematics (Sem 2) MATH1005 Statistics (Sem 2) MATH1013 Mathematical Modelling (Sem 2) MATH1014 Introduction to Linear Algebra (Sem 2) Please note: students should aim to achieve a DISTINCTION (75.0 or above) in MATH1111 and a CREDIT (65.0 or above) in MATH1013 in order to prepare for Year 2 Mathematics units of study that involve higher calculus. Mathematics Bridging Courses There are two bridging courses available for students to gain additional early support: The Extension 1 Course is for people who have completed Mathematics (2-Unit) in the HSC and wish to enrol in a unit of study for which Extension 1 Mathematics (3-Unit) is assumed knowledge. The 2 Unit Course is for people who have not completed Mathematics (2-Unit) and wish to enrol in a unit of study for which 2-Unit Mathematics is assumed knowledge. The main content of this course will be an introduction to differential calculus together with revision of the necessary algebra and coordinate geometry. Knowledge of basic Year 10 mathematics will be assumed. The Bridging Courses run during February and incur an additional cost. 15 Students must complete TWO intermediate units in Mathematics (MATH). 16 TESOL Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages First Teaching Area (Bachelor of Arts major): TESOL is NOT available as a first teaching area. Second Teaching area: students must complete the units as listed below in years 1 and 2 of the degree. TESOL as a third teaching area TESOL is also available as a third teaching area that can be completed in year 5 of the degree. Both the second and third teaching area pathways lead to qualification as a TESOL teacher, and require the completion of the units outlined below.
