3 Switzerland, a landlocked country in central Europe Geographically divided into the Alps, the Central Plateau and the Jura 41,285 km2 (15,940 sq mi) The Swiss Confederation consists of 26 cantons. The Alps occupy the greater part of the territory. The Swiss population of approximately 7.9 million people concentrates mostly on the Central Plateau with the largest cities to be found there.
