The chllenge for secondry school or cdemy, who my be plcing just smll number of young people ech yer within lterntive provision, is to hve good understnding of the sector. This directory nd the qulity ssurnce process outlined elsewhere, ims to provide schools with the informtion they need. Ech school retins responsibility for the well-being nd outcomes of ny student on roll who the school chooses to plce in lterntive provision. If school lcks the resources or expertise to crry out this function effectively, they hve the option to commission New Regent s College to ssess young person s needs nd then source lterntive provision on your behlf. The links tht mny providers hve with other work-bsed lerning centres nd through networks with locl employers llow the young person to experience regulr work plcements nd enhnced work-relted lerning s well s supported progression on to pre-pprenticeship, trineeship or full pprenticeship progrmmes. Alterntive provision for yer olds cn tke vriety of forms but typiclly will involve young people working in n externl provider for some, or ll, of their eduction. Their studies my tke plce in further eduction colleges, voluntry or privte sector providers nd independent free schools. Referrl to n lterntive provider is often n erly intervention mesure where the young person will receive help in ddressing specific issues nd hve n opportunity to lern within smller groups to ensure the needs of ech young person re met. The young person will work with the provider nd the school to identify personlised progrmme of study with relevnt trgets nd support where required. For yer olds progrmmes will generlly be full time nd designed to help young people into trineeship, pprenticeship or employment. Apprenticeships Apprenticeships re open to most young people over 16 nd not currently in full time eduction, they tke between one nd four yers to complete depending on the sector. All pprentices re pid employees who study for n pprenticeship with college or trining provider usully on dy relese. From October 2015 the minimum slry is 3.30 n hour but is often more. Once the pprenticeship is completed most pprentices either progress to n pprenticeship t the next level, sty s n employee with their host employer or go on to further study.
