5 OE v Private Brand Battery Quality Are all batteries the same regardless of cost? NO!!!!!!!!! The mean weight of an OE manufacturer premium brand battery when compared to a private brand battery of the same size and specification is a good quality indicator. Some private brand battery manufacturers limit the amount of materials used in battery construction to reduce costs. The most costly product used in the manufacture of a battery is Lead. Lead content is reduced by using smaller, thinner and fewer plates. The removal of Lead reduces battery reliability, specification, performance and lifecycle.

6 Incorrect Application of Non-OE Product Remember that battery technology (EFB/AGM), quality and specification are based on the vehicle specification, levels of electrical consumers and types of CO2 reduction systems installed. Application of OE technology and quality is therefore essential to ensure the correct operation of all vehicle systems. Incorrect application of Non-OE conventional flooded Lead acid battery in place of an EFB or a conventional flooded Lead acid battery/efb in place of an AGM will result in premature battery failure due to: Excessive battery cycling as conventional flooded Lead acid batteries have much lower cyclic specifications than EFB and EFB have much lower cyclic specifications than AGM Excessive plate damage caused by high battery Depth of Discharge (DOD) which conventional flooded Lead acid or EFB are not designed to support Accelerated loss of plate surface area and resultant CCA (up to 16% in 1st week of service for conventional flooded Lead acid)

9 Active Energy Management Overview New technology Micro-hybrid vehicles equipped with emission control systems may require replacement battery configuration to the active energy management system. The active energy management system controls the charging system to ensure optimum battery performance and Micro-hybrid system functionality START A STOP

10 What is Active Energy Management? Active energy management is a system designed to adapt the vehicles charging strategy based on battery status and electrical loads. The aim is to maintain the availability of the Start/Stop system using detailed data evaluation of the battery. The active energy management system uses information from a battery monitoring sensor located on the negative pole to measure the physical battery variables of: Temperature (T) Voltage (V) Charging current (I)

11 Charge Voltage & Current Regulation The data obtained by the sensor and processed by the control module allows the charge current as well as the charge voltage to be adapted to the charge and operating state of the battery.

12 Alternator/Control Module Communication Data is exchanged between the active energy management control module and the alternator using a Local Interconnect Network (LIN) data bus. The LIN network uses a single wire data bus that both the alternator and control module can use to communicate with each other.

14 Accurate Charging System Testing If the vehicle has a suspected battery or charging system fault and to ensure batteries are not replaced unnecessarily it is essential that accurate charging system testing is carried out. Due to the variations in the alternator output based on the charge and operating state of the battery on it is not possible to accurately test the output from the alternator using traditional methods. The only way to accurately test the performance of the alternator is to interrogate the LIN bus network connecting the active energy management control module and the alternator using an oscilloscope.

15 Why is Battery Configuration Necessary? If after testing the battery is found to be faulty it must be replaced with an OE equivalent specification and technology battery. A replacement battery has different charging requirements to a battery that has reached the end of its serviceable life. The active energy management system must therefore be reset when the battery is replaced to prevent the use of an incorrect charging strategy which could result in: Loss of Micro-hybrid system functionality Increased CO2 emissions Increased fuel consumption Loss of vehicle system functionality Premature battery failure START A STOP

16 Battery Configuration Options Configuration of the active energy management system can now be carried out using the specialised battery configuration tools. Use of the configuration tools allows the provision of a complete battery replacement solution, even on vehicles featuring new emission reduction Micro-hybrid systems. This reduces battery replacement costs and customer inconvenience, enhancing the services provided by automotive workshops.
