Oper Sys: Microsoft Windows 95 Microsoft Windows NT Summary This technical bulletin describes how to do a file transfer using kermit software and RUMBA 95/NT software for VAX or UNIX hosts. Kermit is a family of file transfer, file management, and communication software programs developed and copyrighted by Columbia University. To use kermit file transfer with RUMBA software, you must use C-Kermit 5A (189) or newer and the workstation must be at a command line prompt to send or receive files. Downloading Kermit RUMBA software supports only C-Kermit 5A (189) or newer. The current version is C- Kermit 5A (190). It is free and can be downloaded from this anonymous FTP site: Watsun.cc.columbia.edu UNIX VMS Go to this directory: /kermit/archives/cku190.tar.z (where 190 is the version number). Using RUMBA 95/NT to Initiate File Transfers NOTE: The workstation must be at a command line prompt to send or receive files using kermit. To initiate a file transfer using RUMBA software, do the following: 1. Start a RUMBA software display session. 2. Connect. (The transfer commands will be grayed out until you make a connection.) 3. Select Transfer/Send or Transfer/Receive. The File Transfer dialog box appears. Complete the File Transfer Setup dialog box, using the following information as a guide DOC Page 2

(ASCII files are text only; Binary should be selected for any file that includes formatting information 3350.DOC Page 3

4 like Microsoft Word or WordPerfect files or that has been compiled, like.exe or.com files.) d. Select a host environment of Unix/Ultrix or VMS, depending on the host type. The file transfer will not work with the wrong host type selected. e. Select the RUMBA Initiated check box so that RUMBA software can send the commands for you. You will see kermit appear in the To Host Program Name and From Host Program Name fields. f. Select the Files to Transfer tab and highlight the file(s) you want to transfer DOC Page 4

7 Troubleshooting Time-out Errors Symptom(s) You may see one of the following symptoms when attempting to transfer files using kermit: 1. UNIX/VAX File Transfer either hangs at 0 bytes and times out. 2. RUMBA software does not list host files. If either of these symptoms occur, use the following problem resolution list to resolve the problem. Resolution(s) 1. Check the configuration of the file transfer. 2. Check which version of kermit is installed on the UNIX/VAX host. Currently, RUMBA software supports only Ckermit 5A (189) or newer. Type kermit at the command line to find out what version of kermit you are using DOC Page 7

RUMBA software should be able to find kermit on the host if the path to kermit has been defined in the login environment. Check with the host administrator to make sure this has been done and that you are accessing it properly. 4. Is the workstation at a command-line prompt when RUMBA software initiates a file transfer? Kermit will not work unless the workstation is at a command line prompt. A command line may look like this: $, <hostname>, or <username> RUMBA Initiated Box is Grayed Out If the RUMBA Initiated check box is grayed out, you probably do not have C-kermit 5A (189) or newer (or another protocol, like Xmodem or Zmodem) installed on the host. You must have a supported file transfer protocol installed on the host before you can do file transfers using RUMBA software DOC Page 8

9 Can't See Host Information If you see only the PC side when opening up a kermit file transfer screen, any one of the following could be the cause: The RUMBA Initiated check box is not checked. Kermit is not installed on the host. The kermit path is not set in the host login environment and RUMBA cannot find it. File Transfer Hangs If a kermit file transfer hangs at zero (0) bytes, either of the following could be the cause: The wrong host type is highlighted. The host has an existing kermit version that is not compatible with RUMBA software.
