11 Pre-Professional Health UM-Dearborn What is Pre-Med or Pre-Health? A collection of required courses that prepare you for pursuing a career in a health profession A commitment to perform and serve Most importantly, it s a FRAME OF MIND It is not a major at UM-Dearborn 11
12 Pre-Health Programs at and the Prerequisite Exams PROFESSION Allopathic Medicine (MD) Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Dentistry Veterinary Medicine Pharmacy Physician Assistant Physical Therapy Optometry EXAM MCAT MCAT DAT GRE PCAT GRE GRE OAT Choice of Concentration/Major Are some majors preferred by med schools and other programs? Science vs. Non-Science Choice of Major is not critical Prerequisite courses in Science Quality and Rigor of the Degree Common majors chosen at UM-Dearborn: Biology, Psychology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Microbiology and Chemistry 12
13 Medical College Admission Test The MCAT is a standardized, multiple-choice exam designed to assess your problem solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of natural, behavioral, and social science concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine.
