4 The Pre-Professional Health Studies (PPHS) office at Saint Louis University (SLU) advises undergraduate students who plan to continue on to schools of medicine, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, and veterinary medicine. Students can choose any major offered at SLU and participate in the pre-professional health studies program. Health professional schools are highly interested in students who are high achieving academically and well-rounded in their co-curricular involvement. Thus, pre-health advisors assist and support students in establishing and preparing the most competitive application for admission as is possible by each individual student. Students are always encouraged to submit applications for admission when their applications are the strongest. Services offered through the Pre-Professional Health Studies office are available to all students including students participating in SLU's Medical Scholars program, traditional-track students (Non-Medical Scholar students), and transfer students. In addition to courses required within the major students are required to take: Biology BIOL 104 Principles of Biology I 4 BIOL 106 Principles of Biology II 4 BIOL 302 Molecular Cell Biology I 3 BIOL 3XX Biology Elective (suggested) 3 BIOL 304 Cellular Biochemistry & Molecular 3 Biology II (recommended but not required) Chemistry As Listed for Mathematics MATH 142 Calculus I 4 Physics PHYS 131 Physics I 3 PHYS 132 Physics I Lab 1 PHYS 133 Physics II 3 PHYS 134 Physics II Lab 1 Requirements for HIM/ Pre-Professional curriculum are determined by the Pre-Professional Health Studies Office. (BS)/Medical Scholars Composite ACT score of at least 30 or a combined SAT score of at least 1330 (math + critical reading) and an outstanding high school academic record (with an emphasis placed on the student having earned "A's" in math and science courses. Students with "C's" on their records will not be considered.). OVERVIEW: The Medical Scholars Program is an exclusive opportunity for freshman applicants who plan to eventually attend medical school. Students who are accepted into this highly selective program are placed on an early application track to Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Medical Scholars have the unique benefit of applying to the School of Medicine during the spring semester of their sophomore year which is two years before traditional pre-med students in their class will know of their acceptance to medical school. Med Scholars are then notified of their admission decision before the start of their junior year. While Medical Scholars enjoy early application privileges, their acceptance to the School of Medicine is not guaranteed. Medical Scholars must still sit for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) at the appropriate time, but their test score does not impact their admission to medical school through the program. APPLYING TO THE PROGRAM: Students who meet the minimum requirements for consideration and who have submitted their application for freshman admission must apply separately for the Medical Scholars Program via the online application. Completed applications for both admission and the Medical Scholars Program should be submitted by Dec. 1 to be eligible for consideration. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: During their freshman year, Medical Scholars must attend a special orientation at the start of the semester. Medical Scholars must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 (with at 3.50 or better in math and sciences) at the end of each academic year. Scholars must also observe the recommended course sequence for the duration of study, formally apply to Saint Louis University School of Medicine and take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
