Doing more blended learning Harry Pringle, Selkirk College Identified an issue with unpaid internships, displacing paid work terms for students. As well as the perception of industry of what is an internship vs. Ted suggested Link BC round table to discuss with Industry to the parameters of internship. 5. BCCAT update, deferred to later 6. System Liaison Report, Richard Stride Role-assist from a system wide perspective, such as Quality Assurance Framework, or BCCAT information, industry information; Provincial steering committee from private and public institutions that will look at credentialing and degree quality assessment and perhaps institutional reviews. BC College presidents will be demanding more consultation. Student services and registrar groups are improving articulation and transferability by taking better advantage of electronic opportunities. BCCAT and BC Campus have some parallel and perhaps conflicting projects. 7. Provincial Hospitality Management Core Grid-Mark Elliott HOSP/TOUR Joint Grid The grid was completed between May 2012 and November The next step is for each institution that participated to take the grid to the system liasons at your institution. Chairs may need to approach other department chairs to articulate service or non department courses, although many of those have already been articulated by BCCAT at the various institutions The grid should also serve as a block in which we could more formally articulate this agreement for new and up and coming degrees. Chair of degrees should address any new degrees formally through BCCAT, in order to facilitate student awareness of transfer options. The informal agreements between institutions are not facilitating the process, nor building awareness. The articulation process should agree that all HOSP diplomas from these institutions would be transferable to HOSP degrees and all TOUR diplomas should be transferable to all TOUR degrees, with the caveat that they must meet entrance requirements, which would address any bridging requirements. Students will get the full 2-year credit, even if they need requirements. Builds BC as a tourism learning destination.
6 This articulation process be included on next year s agenda Work that needs to be accomplished is to enhance grid to match TOUR to HOSP courses at diploma level Mark Elliott and Grant Unger Motion by Harry Pringle (Selkirk) The hospitality articulation committee agrees to collectively develop a provincial block transfer agreement that guarantees 60 credits towards a (Hospitality Management) degree completion for students completing a diploma in Hospitality Management for participating BC transfer system members. Worded by John. Seconded by Rebecca Mah, Royal Roads. John Fitzgibbon will look into the mechanics at BCCAT for facilitating a province wide block transfer agreement. Suggestion to add a November session at BC Connect. 8. Career Start-Mark Elliott to circulate electronically documentation on new federal employment subsidy program. Wednesday, May 8, 9am -Noon Discussion about Co-op work term and Internship Ted mentioned that there was a sharing of information several years ago. Camosun has a highly organized co-op, ends on an internship; Rebecca commented that international students Wendy will organize a Moodle site to drop documents and discuss what we are each doing. Harry suggested we go back to our advisory committees to get their perception of what co-op and internship to include in the discussion. Mike T stated that we need to hold industry accountable for their role in our industry, besides a job shop. Delta Hotels has agreed and other hotels are now looking to get more involved. Kerry suggested a glossary that defines terms be developed. Ted suggested we look to industry and GRADS to get support on this. Involve Link BC Rebecca-What do students want? Example of Delta s program where students experience multiple properties. Harry-TEC preferred employers Internships are part of the reason for the 50% loss of students from industry. Kerry-there is a mismatch between what industry is telling us grads need, compared to what they will need in the workplace in the first 5 years Ted recommended Heads in Beds for preferred first year reading. Ted suggested that awards that recognize top employers Ashram-A defined criteria would be required for nominating a preferred hotel employer. Ted mentioned that the recognition then goes into industry newsletters. Kerry- student nominated employer of the year Student chapter of the hotel association Experiential Learning: Coop, Internship, Work Term Experience
7 Mark-include the ministries definition CAFC for Co-op Provincial Advisory Committee could be struck at the November Hotel Conference BC Connect break out CPI Industry session to be organized by Mark Michael C cautions about the preferred employers due to criteria Recommends a checklist of ideal employers that they can self assess. Ted-Banff Springs may have an opinion about best schools Is industry coming to our programs first? We need to promote our programs to industry, at the corporate level Judith-Comes back to branding Hospitality Programs, vast variety Create the criteria for what makes a successful internship, which will inform the survey questions for students, to be surveyed this fall. Mike T to meet with HR Forum to discuss CPIs. 5. BCCAT Update and Announcements, John Fitzgibbon Update from John BCCAT Current pending articulation requests identified. See report Institutional Learning Outcomes Recommendations from report: Associate degrees need to articulate to (Research) universities Looking at applied associate degree Diploma programs vary from 3 weeks to 3 years Need to put structure around the program types Discussion paper on learning outcomes as the basis for transfer Need 8-10 students for a focus group of students transferring from diploma to a degree program: John from Eton College volunteered as did Kevin from VCC. Fiona McQuarrie would be the contact for requesting funding for research on internship. 10. CTHRC Program Guide review Kerry-Guelph is on the board of CTHRC. The program guide is an attempt to establish Canadian program standards. It began with curriculum for Events management. The document is available at a cost. 11. Update from Peter Briscoe (absent), Jonelle Knowles on sub-committee progress on rating system Branding vs. Accreditation or rating A marketing opportunity for BC Harry concurred that branding was also the objective. Provincial Advisory Committee. Creating consistency as a collective voice. Building awareness for issues like work terms, transferability, program content; Research, MOU, terms of agreement, then identify issues. Rebecca will join Jonelle and Peter, and perhaps include Morgan in a conversation.
8 The research and ideas should be presented at the administration level at the various institutions before proceeding. 12. BC TLS Update Discussion Aim, Rationale, Philosophy and goals were excluded in the updated versions of the core curriculum handbook. Jonathan Rouse will write the proposal to update these areas to be put back in. Report is grassroots and will serve to document a memory and provide direction for the future. Discussion with the ministry and BCCAT Meeting with industry around the October conference, is consistent with recommendation 5. Report should be shared with Culinary and adventure before moving forward Wendy Report should be housed with Link BC We need to all agree to the document and how it should be used. Who is our competition for employment of our students?
