10 Early Childhood Education Focus Teaching in early childhood settings Typical Work Settings Licensed preschools, daycare, recreation programs Specific admission requirements 18 yrs of age by December 31 st 50 volunteer/work hours with children 0-6yrs of age in a large group setting. (includes Kindergarten)

11 ECE Program The program is approved by the Provincial government and includes courses and practicum Students will develop research and observation skills Practicum placements are arranged by the department and are a mandatory requirement Attendance is mandatory. Complete hours are required for your application for each license. Field school experience and international placements are available.

12 ECE Diploma Graduates Douglas College ECE diploma graduates are able to apply for entry into various degree programs such as Child and Youth Care at DC and UVIC, the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) (Education) at SFU Bachelor in Early Childhood Education at Capilano University BA in Early Years Education, University of Wales, Trinity St. David s, Carmarthen ECE program graduates are in high demand and readily find employment opportunities

13 English Language Requirement There is an English exit requirement for all ECE students. English courses run in summer as well as the fall and winter semesters. If possible, take your English before your ECE classes begin. You must complete either CMNS 1110 or CMNS 1115 or ENG 1130 before applying for graduation. We strongly recommend that students take either of these courses in their first year of study as they are highly subscribed and tend to fill quickly. Early Registration takes place in February/March. Waitlists are kept over the summer but there are no guarantees of acceptance. Students may opt for entrance the following year. Complete admission requirements early according to notice. Take applicable post secondary courses such as English.

17 Post Certificate or Diploma After completing all their courses including practicums, students may apply for an ECE basic (3 semesters) or post-basic license (4 semesters) ECE Diploma: Special Needs Full and Part time students are eligible to apply for an Assistant s license after completing specific courses: ECED 1122, 1100, 1200, 2300 For further information regarding licensure and application forms, go to

18 For acceptance into the program Attend an information session, submit your application immediately. You will receive a letter from the Registrar s Office inviting you to the Orientation session, sign up for your interview and arrive ½ hour prior to that time. Orientation is held at the David Lam Campus in Coquitlam. Supply all necessary documentation by the deadline. 19 As an ECE student Once fully accepted, begin to check your mydouglas account regularly for messages. Your personal account can be connected to mydouglas so that you will not miss receiving messages from the college or the program. is the most common form of communication between the College, faculty and students All appointments with Staff or Faculty are requested through communication.

20 Getting Started You will receive a letter with instructions on how to register for your courses Once you have been accepted for a student loan you apply for a fee deferral to remain registered in your courses while your funding is being processed Registration dates and times will be noted in the message from the Registrar s office Course packs and textbooks can be purchased the week before classes begin and may search online for some resources. Used texts may be available.

21 ECE Program Admission Requirements Proof of English 12 with a grade of C All ECE applicants take the Douglas College Language Assessment to determine if upgrading is needed in order to meet their exit English requirement Age 18 years by December 31* Use only the forms found in our Prospective Student handbook: 2 reference letters: focus is on suitability working with young children 50 hours of volunteer or work experience in a relevant ECE setting (cannot be same references above) TB Test (available at public health units, this appointment can take a few weeks so give plenty of time for this Participate in Orientation session and Group Interview Receive letter of acceptance from the college Letter contains final admission requirements Pay Tuition Deposit and Register for courses at time assigned Students awaiting student loans must apply for a fee deferral to maintain their registration for courses.
