2 Introduction SeeFile is a user-friendly software application that turns any OSX Mac or Xserve into a webserver which shows folders and files (in thumbnail and preview form) to anyone you grant a username and password to. Each user can be set up to have a different view of your local filesystem, and these can be kept private from each other. Unlike many Web applications, SeeFile is not designed to run on big server farms running Linux or other operating systems. It s also designed so that you don t have to know much about the Internet or web tools like Apache, PHP or SQL database (though it takes advantage of all 3 of these). As a result, if you re a high-tech sysadmin, this may come in handy at some point with SeeFile but the installation is purposely very straightforward, graphical and low-tech. If you have a favorite Apache, PHP or MySQL version you d like to install, please don t try it here! It will most likely cause SeeFile not to work correctly. Finally, as you follow the steps outlined below, don t hesitate to call, or Skype us to ask questions or make sure things are working right. You may also want to check in with us about the planned configuration of hardware and software you re planning to install SeeFile on. 3 Installation Requirements SeeFile requires Mac OSX Server, System 10.4 or later. OSX s Apache and PHP versions are also required but should already be installed as part of any standard OSX system. Other versions of Apache and PHP are not supported. Starting PHP and Web Service on OSX 10.4 Server Open Server Admin and click on the Web Service. Then click start service. To enable PHP click Setting then click on the Modules tab at the top of the window. Scroll down to the php4_module and check its corresponding checkbox. Click Save. Starting PHP and Web Service on OSX 10.5 Server Open Server Admin and click on the Web Service. Then click start service. To enable PHP click Setting then click on the Modules tab at the top of the window. Scroll down to the php5_module and check its corresponding checkbox. Click Save. 3

4 Installing Seefile Double click on the Seefile.pkg icon: The Seefile installer will then open: Click Continue. Click Continue. 4

5 Click Continue and agree to the license. Select your primary drive and click Continue. While there are ways to configure SeeFile to access additional drives after installation, this install drive must be the primary. Click Install; a new window will pop up and ask for a user and password. Enter the information for a user with administrative privileges on your Mac. Click OK. 5

6 Note: If you wish to install SeeFile using MySQL, click on the button Customize and select MySQL 4 or 5. Make sure that MySQL is installed and running before installing SeeFile. SeeFile will now begin installing. After the installer finishes copying and setting up all required files, the database entries must be created. The Installer window claims the time remaining is less than a minute, but depending on your system it may actually last a few minutes. If you pull down the menu to open the installer log window and select Show Errors and Progress, you can see progress information. When the installation is complete, open a browser and go to or the Seefile login page will appear. Immediately available user names are administrator, CustA, and CustB, all with password abc. User Names Note that there are three different kinds of users on this system: Macintosh logins, MySQL accounts, and SeeFile users. You probably only need one MySQL account, since SeeFile accesses MySQL as a single user no matter how many people are authorized to access SeeFile. Likewise, you do not need a separate Mac OSX log in for each SeeFile user, so you can probably stick with the one or two users you may have already set up on the system.
