1 PEP Administration of Athletics Utah State University Summer (Odd Summer Years) Instructor: Jolm M. Kras, EDD Office Phone: John.Kras<@.usu.edu Monday Nights PURPOSE The purpose of this course is designed to assist the student in understanding the current and future objectives of athletics and incorporating them into a philosophy to assist in developing quality programs at the secondary school level. This course will cover all aspects of sport administration including, but not limited to, budget, personnel management, facilities management, liability and legal matters, sport marketing, and evaluation in sport. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Attendance: Class attendance is required. Absents will reduce your grade after one by 10% each absents. Assignments and Examinations: All class assignments must be typewritten and must follow APA guidelines. A. Each student will complete a sports related budget of their choice. (50 pts.) B. Group Project - students will form seven groups and complete a project that will include an oral presentation by the group. Each project will include a written report and a one hour presentation. (100 pts.). C. Each student will find a recent court case (last five years) and write a one page abstract reviewing that case and share it with the class. (50 pts.) D. Because this course is 3 credit hours, but will only meet for the length oftime for 2 credit hours, each student will complete an internship of 12 hours in any Sp01i or Athletic situation that they have not been a part of in the past and keep a log of the experience and write a reflection paper about the experience. (100 pts.)

2 Schedule of group presentations to be determined the first day of class: TOPICS: Budgeting and financial management Public Relations, Partnerships, Mai keting ai1d Promotion in Sport Liability and the Law in Sport Facility and Equipment Planning, Designing and Mai1agement in Sport Communications and Motivation and Evaluation in Sport Management Data Processing and Office Management in Sport Risk Management and the Future of Sport Management Human Resources in Sport Management Administration issues specific to Sport Management A list of possible discussion items for each topic is included in the syllabus. Assignment B: Groups of students (3 or 4) will prepare a one hour presentation on the topic picked during the first class period. Each student will have to include their paper covering their part of the topic (these are done independent of each other). A schedule of the presentation times will be decided during the first class. An example will be shown the first class period. The topic areas are included in this syllabus Assignment C: Each student will find a recent (5 years) comi case involving some legal action taken associated with sports and write a one page abstract of that case. Such areas as gender issues, religion, race etc. will have many new cases filled. Assignment D: You will do a 12 hour internship in any athletic related endeavor that you have not been a part of in the past. Shadow your AD, start a new after school program, a new clinic, something related to athletics. Keep a journal of the time spent and write a reflection paper on the experience.
