2 Chapter VII s Nomination for the Jean H. Cecil Distinguished Counselor Educator- Amy Upton I would like to nominate Dr. Amy Upton for the Jean H. Cecil Distinguished Counselor Educator award. Although Dr. Upton is only beginning her third year as a full time faculty member, she taught on a part time basis while working as a supervising school counselor in Virginia prior to moving to Alabama. Within ALCA she is a member of ALCA, ALSCA, and ALACES, and a member and membership chair for Chapter VIII. Additionally she is a member the American Counseling Association, the American School Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and actively attends and presents at many of these conferences annually. Dr. Upton was hired at the University of South Alabama to coordinate and grow the school counseling program. As an academic and practitioner she brought with her passion and vision in designing and building an exemplary program. She was tasked with preparing her program for a pending initial CACREP accreditation visit, which resulted in an eight year accreditation of the program. She is not only invested in the program and its students, but has taken ownership in the program and its success. She serves as a teacher, an advisor, and a mentor to her students as well as a collaborator within her local community. She believes in the partnership between the university and its local school districts as well as periodically providing free professional development to local school counselors. She feels it is within her frame of responsibility to impact not only her students but also the professional community in which she resides. Her scholarship has included research on school counselor professional identity as well as co authorship of several book chapters for school counseling related publication. She regularly presents at state and national conferences while building connection with professionals throughout the country and internationally. Her belief is that these efforts are to make an impact in the profession holistically and to teach, mentor and support students and professional school counselors.
3 Chapter VII s Nomination for the Jean H. Cecil Distinguished Counselor Educator- Amy Upton Her involvement with her professional associations include both general membership and participation as well as she currently serves as the membership chair of ALCA chapter VII and served as the middle/junior high school VP for the Virginia School Counseling Association (VSCA) as well as a member of the VSCA social justice committee prior to moving to Virginia Beach. She strongly supports her professional associations and advocates for her students to all become actively involved in their professional associations. Dr. Upton recently was recognized by the University of South Alabama s College of Education for her role in teaching. This past spring she was awarded the Early Career Award for Excellence in Teaching, demonstrating recognition by her colleagues and supervisors for the work she was doing with students. She also was recognized the Hampton Road Counselors Association as an Exemplary school counselors in the year before she moved to Alabama. I nominate Dr. Upton for the Jean H. Cecil Distinguished Counselor Educator award as I feel she exemplifies what is means to be a counselor educator; invested in her profession, her students, her program, and her professional associations. Her investment is apparent in her teaching, her supervising, her research and scholarship, her mentoring, and her collaboration within the community.
