1 Improving success for Black men is a simple formula, it begins with an authentic care for them as human beings, it necessitates relationships that convey this care, and it is enforced by good teaching that links what they are learning to their daily lives J. Luke Wood, 3/2014, White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans SPEAKING TOPICS Men of Color in Community Colleges Boys and Men of Color in Education Community College Student Success Teaching Men of Color Counseling and Advising Men of Color Mentoring Boys and Men of Color Practices for Empowering Underserved Students Building Affirming Campus Climates and Cultures Psychosocial Outcomes and Student Success Critical Race Theory in Education Racial and Gender Microaggressions Strategic Planning for Student Equity Ethical Leadership and Decision-Making Transformative Leadership in Education, is an Associate Professor of and the Director of the Doctoral (EdD) Program in Community College/ Postsecondary Education Leadership at (SDSU). 3 Some scholars say the recent protests in Ferguson, Mo., highlight the need for changes in how colleges help Black men succeed Black men are criminalized in our society, and that affects how police officers and others interact with them, teachers may be thinking, Do I want this student to come to my office hours? Maybe I don t want a Black male coming to my office to meet with me one on one J. Luke Wood, 11/2014, New York Times BOOK PUBLICATIONS Wood, J. L., Harris III, F., & White K. (2015). 4 The best programs that I know of use data to inform what they do. There s a lot of people, a long line of people, who can say that they did something, but a very short line of people who can say, they had an effect. You have to use data on the front end and back end to have an effect. J. Luke Wood, 6/2014, National Press Club SELECT PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLES Wood, J. L., & Harris III, F. (2015).
