Outline Background Examples Motivation Objectives Plan Activity Summary 2
Background Programming skills are at the heart of CSEd Not only for CS majors, but also CS minors Typically around 10 ECTS at the minimum Each course has large amount of students 3
Background Mass courses in many universities Many tools developed to support education Automatic assessment e.g. Ceilidh, BOSS, Scheme-Robo, TRAKLA2 Feedback/quality assessment e.g., on programming style, memory leaks Software Visualization e.g., MatrixPro, PlanAni (roles of variables) 4
Example: TRAKLA2 Visual algorithm simulation exercises tracing exercises, visual web environment, 24/7 interaction, submit, view model solution, reset Automatic Assessment and Feedback Model solutions in terms of Algorithm Animations Learning by doing at one s own pace Learning from own mistakes (misconceptions) no copying answers from peers (randomized input) no aimless trial-and-error (too large search space) 5
Example: TRAKLA2 6
Motivating Problems Systems capable of automatic assessment take years to develop In return for this the benefits can be invaluable Problems to tackle: Visibility/benefits for the local university only Overlapping development effort Development teams remain small without collaboration Random diffusion of systems 7
Objectives The network aims at tackling the barriers to the di!usion of existing tools and materials among educational institutes as well as at promoting the collaboration among teachers. In addition, the development projects aim at improving the level of programming studies on a significant, nation-wide scale by joining forces and pooling development resources e!ciently. The objective is to establish high level and economically sound methods of teaching, which utilize the latest research results as well. 8
Plan Resource sharing web sites such as SIGCSE Education Links descriptions of ready and ongoing projects in Finland Mutual research & development projects not only tool, but also researcher & developer exchange Collaboration mailing list(s) special interest group(s) seminars and workshops Funding for pilot projects focus on one tools & its generalization 9
Activity Begun in 2006 First three pilot projects TRAKLA2 to TUT Mutual TRAKLA2 development project, UT & HUT Evaluation of Boss & Goblin for programming courses Events, special courses and meetings Keynote Moti Ben-Ari in Methods, Materials and Tools for Programming Education, Tampere, Short course Automating Assessment - A Computer Science Perspective; Mike Joy from University of Warwick, UK, Espoo, January 1st FVU Seminar on Teaching Basic Programming, Turku,
Future Directions Example pilot project TRAKLA2 utilized by 7 different universities 6 in Finland, 1 in US systematic analysis in different universities experimental studies, randomized groups performance, feedback, attitude Similar approach in other pilot projects Mutual research projects sharing ideas & innovations Open source 11
Summary Finnish Virtual University Network for Teaching Basic Programming Events, pilot projects, networking Mailing list: Subject: subscribe To: Discussion mostly in Finnish Homepage List of Finnish CSEd Open source -projects, tools 12
