2 UniPID in Numbers Network of 10 Finnish Universities Founded in 2002 and coordinated by the University of Jyväskylä from 2005 Funded by member university fees and with external funding for its different projects Offers annually UniPID-virtual courses, with 400+ students Organizes a yearly call for the members universities for grants to produce new UniPID virtual courses Mailing list with 670 subscribers, and 2 x 11 newsletters yearly

12 International Development Cooperation (2) Course Summary: The course discusses the origins of development cooperation. The policy making and implementing institutions are introduced, as well as the different strategies, that have been emphasized up to the present in development cooperation discussion and goals. The development cooperation of Finland is used as an example of the national level. Objectives: To become conversant with the principles and the history of development cooperation To acquire the basic knowledge and the main development institutions and their activities to become familiar with the current development discussion, policies and strategies to know the basics of development work and assistance flows Learning methods: Independent virtual study using given readings and internet-based materials links, discussions, short assignments and essays

14 UN Ideas in World Politics: Debating Development and Child Rights (2) Course Summary: The course explores the roles of the United Nations system in shaping ideas for development and child rights policies by promoting universal values, advancing international norms and principles of international law, and setting common vision and objectives for the improvement and well-being of humanity. The course is divided in two modules. The first module introduces the students to the impact of UN ideas in framing development as an international field of practice and intervention. The second module covers the mechanisms of formulation of UN ideas on child rights as part of an overall international child policy to be applicable in UN Member States. Objectives: UN normative position in world politics Structures of conflict and competition within the UN organization Conceptual and rhetorical forms of analyzing UN debates The specific UN ideas of development and child rights Online resources on the UN Learning Methods: The course consists of independent virtual study by using given video lectures, internet-based material, readings, participation in interactive discussions and individual assignments. The course will be carried out in the moodle virtual learning environment place video-lectures, tasks and a forum for interaction. A discussion board will be available to facilitate interaction and discussion among students. The students are also encouraged to give feedback and ask questions to the instructors on the lectures and reading material via the discussion board.

Register for the course: Note: Completing the online registration form does not guarantee admittance into the course! 5. The electronic registration form is sent to the Course Coordinator for approval 6. Create your own learning environment

16 Tips for Taking a UniPID Course Read the course overview and timetable carefully Set aside regular times each week for your virtual course Take the opportunity to get to know and interact with students from other universities on the virtual environment Express your opinions and discuss openly! Note the deadlines of assignments!

19 Call for Course Proposals 2013 Two courses will be funded: New UniPID Course (1): A sum of up to per course is available from UniPID for the creation and provision of a new virtual course Updating Existing UniPID Course (1): A sum of up to 3 500/course for updating a course that has been offered as a UniPID virtual course at least 3 times Courses addressing cross-cutting topics, theoretical issues, or the implementation and management of development cooperation are of particular interest.

20 Master s Award in Development Studies For a high quality master s thesis on global development or development studies Prize of 1,000 2 honorable mentions Criteria: At least magna cum laude or 4 Fit within a development research framework From a UniPID university Submitted within the specified timeframe Next Call in Spring 2014!
