Listing of each upper-level category opening in a job bank or newsletter of media trade groups whose membership includes substantial participation by women and minorities; 13. Provision of assistance to unaffiliated non-profit entities in the maintenance of web sites that provide counseling on the process of searching for broadcast employment and/or other career development assistance pertinent to broadcasting; 14. Provision of training to management level personnel as to methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and preventing discrimination; 15. Provision of training to personnel of unaffiliated non-profit organizations interested in broadcast employment opportunities that would enable them to better refer job candidates for broadcast positions; 16. Participation in other activities designed by the station reasonably calculated to further the goal of disseminating information as to employment opportunities in broadcasting to job candidates who might otherwise be unaware of such opportunities. (University of Utah Job Fairs) Participated in the University of Utah Student Fair. Visited with students and fair visitors about available internships, volunteer opportunities and career opportunities in broadcasting as well as current openings. 1 Date: 2/5/2015 Participants: Christy Dunn, Human Resources Officer, Denise Elwood, HR Assistant (University of Utah Job Fairs) Participated in the University of Utah Career Fair. Visited with students and fair visitors about career opportunities in broadcasting as well as current openings.
2 2 Date: 3/11/2015 Participants: Christy Dunn, HR Officer; Denise Elwood, HR Assistant; Rich Finlinson, KUEN Marketing Director Hosts: KUEN in conjunction with the Utah Broadcaster s Association KUEN in conjunction with the Utah Broadcaster s Association hosted a broadcasting job fair at the University of Utah Union Building on March 11, As co-hosts, station and Human Resources personnel assisted in the event by: participating as a member of the community outreach committee, assisted with planning, creating and distributing flyers to campus departments, running on-air announcements of the job fair, placing notice on the station website, creating a job fair booth, distributing multiple handouts and giveaways, and visiting with booth guests about careers in the broadcasting field and procedures to apply for station positions. The fair was considered a success in terms of attendance and interest. 4 Participants: KUEN staff A multitude of tours are given every year of the Eccles Broadcast Center, which is the building that houses KUEN. Tours are given to school groups as well as other community organizations. The tours include a discussion regarding careers in the broadcast field and what type of training would be needed. Tours include a view of the studio, production sound booth, etc. Tours this year included: Rich Finlinson and Dennis Sampson hosted a youth (scout) group. They visited several areas of the building including Master Control, and the Data Center. Kimberly Davis gave a tour of the building to a group of educators around the state. Rich Finlinson conducted a tour of 20 students and adult leaders regarding after-school youth activity with an emphasis on career options; Rich also conducted a tour of 30 educators and interpreters from Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Cote D'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Finland, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, People's Republic of China, Russia. Switzerland, and Ukraine. Tour included Master Control, Production, etc. 4 Date: April 14, 2015 Participants: UEN-TV Description: UEN-TV hosted the premiere viewing of Design Time, a documentary about Salt Lake City s Rose Park Elementary School. Students face a real-life design challenge: design transition services for military veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Partner with a retired Marine Colonel, who represents returning veterans and their families. Using a design thinking process, students interview the Colonel, analyze his concerns, brainstorm possible solutions, and prototype spaces that serve the needs of returning vets. The students have an opportunity to connect deeply with issues new to them. 4 Participants: Barry Bryson, UEN Associate Director Description: Barry participates as a member of the Clearfield Job Corps. CTEC board (Career Technical Education Council). 4 Participants: Laura Hunter, KUEN Station Manager/UEN Instructional Services CCO Description: UEN sponsors an online guide called Utah Futures to help provide college and career readiness resources for students, parents, school counselors and advisors. Online Utah Futures is now this site focused on STEM education: Additionally, Laura is on the Utah Futures steering committee to help provide college and career readiness resources for students,
3 parents, school counselors and advisors. 4 & 10 Participants: Lisa Cohne, Outreach Coordinator, Instructional Services/KUEN Programming Lisa and programming staff members air programs or participate with a multitude of projects as part of a community impact initiative. Many of these events take place at educational centers or locations. Two large projects for 2014 included the FNX launch and UEN s Preschool Pioneer Library web site in Spanish and English. Other Examples: Preschool Pioneer Library Presentation to pre-service teachers at Southern Utah University; it included information about the importance and value of high quality content for broadcast careers. UEN s American Indian Film Festival screening at 5 Utah Higher Ed. Institutions during Nov included information about the importance and value of high quality multicultural content for broadcast careers. Presentation at the Utah Early Childhood Conference Toddlers & Technology. UEN partnered with Canyons SD, Utah Division of Indian affairs. Presentation to Park City teachers and parents regarding how the media influences learning. Children s Festival Salt Lake County Libraries, regarding how the media influences learning. Numerous presentations and activities to educate parents, children and educators about the resources available on UEN s Pioneer Library. Presentations at BYU s Utah Family and Consumer Science Conference. Presentations at the Mountain States Deaf and Blind Conference. Going Blind: SLCC Film Screening. Several Salt Lake Community College Film Series events ranging from Blindness, Food & Film, Autism and Art, all followed with discussions about careers in broadcast as the series was a year-long partnership with the SLCC Center 4 & 10 Participants: Laura Hunter, KUEN Station Manager/UEN Instructional Services CCO; Jenn Gibbs, Content Specialist; Lisa Cohne, Partnerships Managers; Jessica Anderson, Web Developer Description: Laura, Jenn, Lisa, and Jessica have helped lead the Education and Outreach activities for a three-year, multi-state, multi-organization hydrology and computer science project. Media activities included updating the project website and airing waterthemed programming on KUEN in conjunction with the project. 4 & 10 Date: November 12th 2014 Participants: Adriane Andersen, Lisa Cohne Description: KUEN coordinated and hosted a film screening at the Blanding USU campus, aimed at raising awareness about Native American experiences graduating from high school, as well as the national drop-out crisis and the American Graduate initiative to increase graduation rates. 4 & 10 Participants: JoAnn Wong, Admin Assist & Community Outreach Jo-Ann made 6 presentations to educational conferences this period. Conferences included charter schools, Utah Education Association, Utah Coalition for Educational Technology and Super Readers. She helped coordinate the premiere viewing of Design Time. The documentary featured a group of Salt Lake City elementary students who discovered design thinking. JoAnn s primary focus is to introduce the services of UEN/KUEN and provide programming resources to educators, media specialists, parents and children attending. She responds to a variety of questions from participants.
4 5 Participants: Laura Hunter, KUEN Station Manager/UEN Instructional Services CCO, Rich Finlinson, Katie Garrett, Interns Description: UEN continues to offer a formal internship program, coordinating with the University of Utah to provide college credit. Additionally, the program provides summer service opportunities for high school students. The program demonstrates UEN s strong commitment to education and outreach, providing interns opportunities to engage in meaningful projects leading to employment in public media. ( 5 Date/Intern: June, 2014; Bennett Gibson Participants: Karen Krier, Web Administrator Bennett is updating and developing online forms and interfaces using php for the Utah Education Network web site and other web sites that UEN hosts and maintains. 6 Participants: Justin Brooksby, UEN Training Manager (General outreach) UEN offers training classes to public school educators throughout the state. During general presentations, Instructors may refer to the on-line KUEN ITV guide and ITV programs as resources. The presentations highlight activities of the station as they relate to education in Utah. UEN offers training classes to public school educators throughout the state. UEN professional Development offered 689 training sessions from June 1, 2014 until May 31, Approximately 17,000 participants attended these sessions. 8 Participants: KUEN Managers/Supervisors and Station Personnel KUEN is a department within the University of Utah. All full-time employees are eligible to receive half of their tuition paid, for any class taken at the University. Many employees take advantage of this benefit to further their education. In addition, KUED occasionally pays the remaining 50% for classes taken by employees that are in a related area or can assist them improve or gain additional job skills. Employees also attend training outside of the University structure as needed. These classes are frequently paid by the organization. 8 Participants: KUEN Managers and Supervisors Employees are given the opportunity to develop skills and increase professional development by attending conferences and workshops. 10 Date: Fall: 2014; Spring: 2015 Participants: Laura Hunter, KUEN Station Manager/UEN Instructional Services CCO/Adjunct Associate Professor; Jared Covili, UEN Trainer; Dani Kuarz, UEN Trainer
5 Description: Laura, Jared, and Dani taught classes at the University of Utah in Educational Psychology. Although they do not teach about broadcasting directly, they discuss the use of broadcast in education. 10 Date: April 2-3, 2015 Participants: UEN Professional Development staff, Michael Hakkarinen, Jared Covili, Rob Bentley, Jared Fawson, Dani Sloan, Braden Woodfield, Katie Garrett, Jo Ann Wong, Rich Finlinson and Michelle Dumas. Description: UEN staff gave numerous presentations and staffed a busy booth at the Utah Coalition for Education Technology (UCET) annual conference. 10 Date: September 27, 2014 Participants: Laura Hunter, KUEN Station Manager/UEN Instructional Services CCO and Kyle Anderson, KUEN Programming Director Description: KUEN broadcast live, American Graduate Day: Make it Happen, a public media initiative, supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, to help students stay on the path to on-time high school graduation and future success. 10 Participants: Laura Hunter, KUEN Station Manager, UEN Instructional Services CCO KUEN broadcasts MHz Worldview which provides a wide range of international programming including world music, foreign films, and news and current events programming in multiple languages, and conduct digital education events with members of various groups in Utah. Because the Worldview service is so diverse, it works very well as a broad-based educational tool. Schools 10 can now enjoy foreign-language opportunities with the use of English subtitles. Participants: Laura Hunter, KUEN Station Manager/UEN Instructional Services CCO; Katie Garrett, UEN Media Services Manager KUEN is involved in producing video productions each year. A few video examples aninstructional video on tips using technology in the classroom. 10 Participants: Laura Hunter, KUEN Station Manager/UEN Instructional Services CCO and Kyle Anderson, KUEN Programming Director Description: KUEN participated in the following teaching and learning programs this past year: --SpyHop monthly broadcasts of Watch This! This monthly series presents four documentary films produced by Salt Lake City teens on current and socially relevant topics of their choosing. The creative, writing and production process provides a broad learning experience of employment and job possibilities in a television setting. --KUEN produces monthly television content and highlight guides that are delivered online to 40,000 Utah educators. 10 Date: Nov Participants: Lisa Cohne, Outreach Mgr
6 Description: Members of the community screened and discussed the film Up Heartbreak Hill, which included conversation about high school dropouts, clashing cultures within the community, resources from UEN and American Graduate. Date: dates below: Participants: Rich Finlinson, Dir, Marketing/PR Description: Training and Presentations: 9/11/2014 EBC Brown Bag lunch discussion on Infographics as a method to improve communication 10/16-17/ teachers Utah Education Association Convention, included face-to-face interaction as part of survey at trade show booth 10/21-22/ network security professionals SAINTcon Network Security Conference, face-to-face interaction as part of survey at trade show booth. 10 Participants: Laura Hunter, KUEN Station Manager/UEN Instructional Services CCO Description: KUEN s instructional television programs (ITV) and educational services serve the needs of Utah s schoolchildren and also provide professional development programs for teachers and adult education courses for Utah s general population. Many KUEN services provide programming, training and employment opportunities that serve Utah women. In 2014, these services included career enrichment and workplace skill programs. Extensive online resources complement KUEN s television content, providing a rich environment for learning. KUEN also helps extend the reach of KUEN s local programs to Utah s public schools and lifelong learners. KUEN delivers educational programming to high-poverty rural areas and five Native American tribes on four Utah reservations. KUEN also serves home-bound and other seniors in cooperation with county-aging services departments throughout the state. 14 Participants: Christy Dunn, HR Officer Human Resources Officer participates as a member of the national chapters for the Society of Human Resource Managers to 14 become updated regarding HR trends, legal changes, and general administrative topics. Participants: Managers, KUEN KUEN encourages supervisors to attend management classes through the University of Utah Center for Staff Development program. Workshops include topics on Performance Management, Hiring Principles, and Diversity Training, Illegal discrimination/ada, Sexual Harassment. Supervisors also attend classes offered through professional organizations. 14 Date: April 22, 2015 Participants: KUEN Managers
7 KUEN hosted a manager from the Equal Opportunity office to make a presentation to managers regarding Illegal Discrimination, Sexual Harassment and the ADA. 16 Participants: Christy Dunn, HR Officer Full-time job postings are placed on the Utah Workforce Services job bank, which is available to Workforce Services agencies throughout the state of Utah. Postings are also distributed to Career Services at the University of Utah. 16 Participants: Instructional Services/KUEN Programming Public service announcements from various state higher education institutions, as well as national and local agencies, are broadcast frequently on KUEN. Some PSAs are presented in both English and Spanish language versions.
