1 Terms of Reference A Lead Expert for Developing a Leadership training session within Women on Board Initiative Location : Cairo Application Deadline : 15/10/2014 Type of Contract : Service Contract Languages Required : English Duration of Contract : Two Months Background Egypt is the most populous country in the region with a population of approximately 92 million with a labor force of almost 27 million of whom approximately 6 million are women. Because of the lack of a robust legal and social structure that promotes gender equality in business in general, and on corporate boards in particular, women s participation on corporate boards is very limited, particularly compared to other countries, the aggregate percentage of women on corporate boards in Egypt is below 7% while in a country like Norway it reaches above 40%. This is not just a gender numbers game. It is about the richness of the board as a whole, the combined contribution of a group of people with different skills and perspectives to offer, different experiences, backgrounds and life styles and who together are more able to consider issues in a rounded, holistic way that creates a culture allowing everyone to excel. In gender balanced and inclusive environments, both men and women tend to acknowledge the benefits of balance, and their shared support for this type of organizational culture neutralizes the potential backlash of a more divisive, gender-wars approach. To improve the gender balance of corporate boards in Egypt and the MENA region by sensitizing male board members to gender issues and qualifying women from different corporate sectors and outside the corporate mainstream to be appointed to corporate boards. 1
2 Women on Board The ECRC in partnership with AUC and IFC are launching Women on Board Program. The program focus is both to sensitize male board members to gender issues and qualify and support women for corporate board positions. This will be accomplished through multiple interventions over a period of time that range from awareness raising, networking, coaching and facilitation to direct training for certification. Program activities will include: 1. Design and development of training content 2. Development of communication material 3. Running board qualification programs for women 4. Supporting women board members network 5. Creating a network of gender-sensitive coaches and facilitators 6. Running leadership sessions for boards 7. Documenting and publicizing success stories 8. Supporting practice-oriented research related to women on boards Targeted audience: Executives from within the corporate sector, for whom there are many different training and mentoring opportunities; and Women from outside the corporate mainstream, including entrepreneurs, academics, civil servants and senior women with professional service backgrounds, for whom there are fewer opportunities to take up corporate board positions. Women On Board project will use similar criteria that a corporate board would use when seeking to fill a director vacancy. Key criteria considered are: Track record of 10+ years of strong performance at the senior executive level with a large company, reporting directly to the CEO, or has responsibility for a major business unit For consultants and outside the corporate mainstream, should have demonstrated leadership experience plus a deep knowledge and expertise in a specialty sought after by corporate boards Engage in driving the overall strategic direction of her organization Experience working with boards At a point in her career when she has the capacity for serving on corporate boards while in her current role Has the support of her CEO to take part 2
3 The main objective of this assignment is to hire an expert to develop leadership module within the whole training program of Women in Board. To develop a leadership module with focus on: Developing Leadership Identity Practicing Leadership Skills Managing Vision and Voice The leadership training session should addresses areas such as communication style, resilience, personal values and leadership presence and influence. The training material offers a potent mix of theory and strategy for addressing the myriad of challenges that women face in the contemporary workplace. The following key learning areas should be covered: - Authentic leadership, - Maximizing potential - Exercising leadership - Accessing power - Presence and visibility - Influence and connection - Powerful conversations - Cultural capability - Courage and conviction - Building networks for the future - Visions of and for leadership - Getting ahead (syndicate exercise) SCOPE OF WORK - 1. Develop training material Conduct the training sessions and be able to engage with the audience in a constructive dialogue, using interactive tools and applying the principles of Communication to achieve the training objective Conduct evaluation of the training, assess objective achievements and document lesson learnt. 3
4 Outcome - Increased visibility within their organizations, professions and sectors - Capacity and confidence to engage with peers, senior management and boards - Skills to become more impactful leaders Program Benefits Improve confidence, presence, visibility, resilience and sense of belonging Increase women chances of success when presenting to boards and senior leaders within their organizations or externally Become more effective as a leader in their workplace Develop an understanding of how to manage gender issues in their career Increase collegiality with decision makers and key company personnel Know how to approach potential advocates, mentor and sponsors Challenge yourself REQUIREMENTS Master s Degree or equivalent in business, Economics or related field Previous experience in leadership training and coaching A minimum of 10 years of experience in providing training and consulting services in leadership Experience in designing, developing, providing and evaluating trainings and training material. Ability to provide value-added insight to the project theme as well as the targeted firm Exceptional written and oral communication skills Commitment to right-first-time and continuous improvement Outstanding presentation skills Excellent team player Education 4
