8 1 Milano Premium Responsive Magento Theme Installation Websites can be intimidating and complex technical systems. Installing a Magento website is usually a straightforward process, but does require a basic level of technical knowledge. 1.1 Hosting Recommendation Given that Magento is an advanced e-commerce platform, its fast, efficient operation is completely dependent on the quality of hosting that it is running on. Without Magento optimized hosting, pages will load painfully slowly, visitors will get frustrated and the overall online shopping experience will drive away potential customers. In some cases, Magento will not even install on slow, poorly optimized hosting Magento Hosting: What Does Work The best way to achieve top-notch e-commerce performance is to install your Magento shop on a private server or VPS with sufficient server resources. It is similarly crucial to apply all of the software improvements, patches and updates recommended by the Magento community. This will require a high level of technical skill (or the hiring an expert) and thus additional investment. However, if you don't want the hassle of managing those aspects of running a Magento-based e-commerce store, there are few Magento Optimized Hosting offers around Magento Hosting: What To Avoid The simple fact is that Magento hosting requires much more server resources and specialized optimization than cheap shared hosting like Hostgator, GoDaddy,Bluehost, Fatcow or 1and1 can deliver.
Installation 9 Don't even try it. You'll be deeply disappointed and frustrated by the results. 1.2 System Requirements Magento System Requirements Your hosting must meet Magento's stated system requirements. You can easily check the suitability of your current hosting by downloading and running the Magento compatibility test Milano Premium Theme System Requirements Milano Magento Theme supports Magento Community Edition , and The Theme does NOT support Magento Enterprise Edition and Magento GO. 1.3 Installation Options There are two options to install Milano Magento Theme: 1. Quick Install - this installation method will result in an website that looks like the demo available at ThemeForest. It have numerous categories, menus, products, banners and many more website features already set. It is recommended if you never set a Magento e-commerce before. It also shows most of the Milano features, so you just remove what you don't need. This installation method, however, cannot be used if you have an already working Magento E-Commerce and you want to add Milano Magento Theme to it. In such a case, please proceed to normal install. 2. Normal install - this installation method will end in a clean Magento installation with no products, categories or whatever e-commerce content, plus Milano installed and activated. Use it if you have an already installed Magento or if are an advanced user and you want to build your own category structure and options.
Milano Premium Responsive Magento Theme Quick Install To perform a Quick Install follow these steps: 1. In your hosting account, create an empty database which you are going to use for the installation. Please refer to the hosting company's help or guides if you have troubles with that. 2. Import the Milano_Quick_Start_Database_x_x_x.zip (which you will find in the Milano_Quick_Start_x_x_x folder inside Milano package) to your empty database, that you created in the previous step. Use PHPMyAdmin, or another method provided by your hosting company's control panel. 3. Upload the contents of Milano_Quick_Start_Files_x_x_x.zip (which you will find in the Milano_Quick_Start_x_x_x folder inside Milano package) to the root folder of your Magento installation. You can do this either by using an FTP client (e.g. Filezilla from filezilla-project.org/ download.php) or another method provided by your hosting company. A quicker, more reliable way to do this is to upload the.zip file to the server, then extract the files directly there using SSH or another method provided by your hosting company. Don't forget to delete the.zip file from the server at the end. 4. With a web browser, open your hosting account's root folder, to start a normal Magento installation process. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. 1.5 Normal Install
Installation Installing Magento To install Magento please follow the Magento installation guide Installing Your Milano Theme Before installing the Milano theme make sure your Magento is set-up and running. Follow these steps: 1. Upload the contents of Milano_Premium_Magento_Theme_x_x_x.zip (which you will find in the Milano package) to the root folder of your Magento installation. You can do this either by using an FTP client (e.g. Filezilla from filezilla-project.org/ download.php) or another method provided by your hosting company. The contents of the above file (Milano_Premium_Magento_Theme_x_x_x.zip) will not overlap with any existing Magento files, though they will be placed inside folders already created by Magento. 2. If you are not logged into your Magento installation admin area, go ahead and log in. 3. Then, refresh the cache by going into System -> Cache Management, then select all Cache Types either by clicking on each checkbox or by clicking on Select All, then select Actions: Refresh and click on Submit.
12 Milano Premium Responsive Magento Theme 4. Log out from the backend then log in again. 5. Go to System -> Configuration then on the left menu ShopShark -> Milano Options -> Activate The Milano Theme. Click on Activate the template.

Congratulations, your Milano theme should now be installed. Please now check the front page of your ecommerce website. 2 How To Configure Your Store In Milano The Milano theme does work straight out of the box but not all of the features are enabled by default. You may also want to implement the following steps: 1. Uploading your logo. 2. Configuring the home page slideshow. 3. Creating some static blocks to display your custom content. 4. Creating categories and uploading products. All of the options for controlling the Milano theme are located in System -> Configuration, then on the left menu ShopShark ->Theme Options. 2.1 General Options How To Upload Your Logo Image This button lets you upload the main logo image for your e-commerce store. We recommend using a.png file with a transparent background, but GIFs and JPEGs will also work (though JPEG format does not support transparency and your logo will appear in a box). The image will not be resized, but the layout of the page will change to fit it. The default height is 62 pixels.
14 Milano Premium Responsive Magento Theme Keep as close as possible to the default height of 62 pixels for the best results "Back To Top" Button This option enables or disables the "back to top" button on the right bottom corner of all pages. 2.2 Menu Options Menu Type You can choose between MegaMenu and Standard options here. The MegaMenu is showing everything in a single wide drop down where all subcategories are shown in columns, plus category description or images (optional). The Standard Menu is showing subcategories in separate, smaller dropdowns.
How To Configure Your Store In Milano Show Category Description This option is only available if Menu Type is MegaMenu. You can choose between HTML Block, Thumbnails and No Additional Blocks. If you choose HTML Block you can insert text and HTML (images, styling, etc.) for every category in the top most level (these are the category shown in the main menu). To do that go in Catalog -> Manage Categories -> <the category you want to edit> -> Display Options -> Mega Menu Description. If you choose Thumbnails, the thumbnail image of the child category will be shown together with its name. You can upload a thumbnail image in Catalog -> Manage Categories -> <the category you want to edit> -> General Information -> Thumnail Image Additional Navigation Link This is the special link always situated on the right side of the main menu. If you wish, you can place a link to a special sale offer or support page here Additional Navigation Link Url This is the URL for the link in the previous option. 2.3 Home Page Options Show New /Sale Products Slider This will enable or disable the slider showing the new/sale products on the homepage. You can display a product as "new" in this slider by setting either "new from date" or "new to date", or both, in the General Options for the product. Setting only "new from date" will start displaying this product as new from that date, indefinitely. Setting both will display the product as new in the dates between, and setting only "new to date", which is more likely, will start displaying the
16 Milano Premium Responsive Magento Theme product as new immediately and remove it as new, at the date defined. Products that are either set with special price from/to date or have applied some price rule reducing their price are also shown here. The logic in the special price from/to date is the same as above Title (New / Sale Products) This option is only available if the New/Sale Products Slider is enabled. It allows you to set a custom title for the New/Sale Products slider. 2.4 Category Page Options "Add To Cart" uses AJAX This option enables AJAX on all Add To Cart buttons and links. If enabled, a click on "add to cart" will lead to background (AJAX) call to add the product to the cart and a popup message with the result. Keep it enabled for better user experience. The classic approach is to reload the whole page Add To Wishlist And Add To Compare This option enables Add To Wishlist and Add To Compare. If you don't want them - turn it on disable Add to Wishlist And Add to Compare uses AJAX This option enables AJAX on Add To Wishlist and Add To Compare. If enabled it will make the process to run in the background Quick View This option enables a Quick View link to appear on every product. When clicked this link will display a popup with main product details.

The best use of this effect option is with front view and back view photos of your products. The normal image can be the front view and then when the mouse hovers over the image, the back view is automatically shown. However, it is recommended to have words like Back View imposed on the rear view image intended for the Hover Effect Grid View Mode This option controls between 3 and 4 column grid and Mosaic View. 43 Optimisation Advise 3 43 Optimisation Advise Keeping Magento fast and reliable is an important task in a real market environment. Major speed-up can be achieved only with server (hosting) based solutions (provided by Magento Optimized Services), but these are a couple of quick settings you can apply to speed-up your Magento store on any hosting: 1. Merge your CSS and JavaScript by doing this: Go to System -> Configuration then on the left menu Advanced -> Developer then JavaScript Settings -> Merge JavaScript Files -> Yes; CSS Settings -> Merge CSS Files -> Yes Save the config 2. Compile the core Magento code. Go in System -> Tools -> Compilation. Click on Run Compilation Process.
44 Milano Premium Responsive Magento Theme 3. Never leave a message about the store cache or indexes unaddressed. Rebuild the indexes and refresh the cache when needed. Magento will give you a warning when you have to do this. It is usually needed when you upload new products or change categories. You can postpone the reindex/refresh until you are done making changes. Re-indexing can take a lot of time on slow servers! 4 Troubleshooting Error I'm getting 404 not found when trying to open theme admin pages. Log out from Magento admin panel, clear the store cache under var/cache, and log in again. 4.2 Blank page After the extension installation the store gives an error, or blank page. Log out from Magento admin panel. Change the owner of the extracted extension files to the web server user and set 775 permissions on them. Clear the store cache and try again.
Troubleshooting Changes do not appear My configuration changes do not appear on the frontend. Clear the store cache under var/cache, clear all browser cookies for your store domain and refresh the page in your browser. 4.4 Access Denied error There is no Theme Admin or Cloud Zoom extension in configuration section, or I get a blank page, or Access Denied error. Log out from Magento admin panel, clear the store cache under var/cache, clear all browser cookies for your store domain and log in again 4.5 UI Widgets Aren t Working Each product collection retrieved for a slider must contain enough products to fill at least two slides. For example, the minimum number of products required in a 2-column slider is three products. Double-check the required jquery resource is loaded. For some widgets this must be added via Layout XML. 4.6 Upgrades Milano Magento Theme is regularly updated with new features, improvements, fixes, and support for the latest Magento releases. Milano Magento Theme is completely indipendent from the Magento core development, so all updates in one should not interfere with the other and can be applied separately. If there is a newly introduced feature in Magento which is not covered by Milano Magento Theme then a new versio of the theme will be issued and you have to upgrade both. Keep an eye on the
46 Milano Premium Responsive Magento Theme support forum Responsability You are responsible for upgrading Milano Magento Theme and the Magento core. You are responsible for merging your modifications Upgrading Magento Magento core upgrades are tricky. Make full backups of the filesystem and database, then create a staging environment to test the core upgrade. If everything tests smoothly, then repeat the process for the production store usually during off peak hours in case of problems. Be prepared to restore to your backups if necessary. 1. Never allow Magento's core to fall more than one release behind. Ignoring updates increases risk, and upgrading over multiple releases at once is more difficult. 2. Do not upgrade Magento's core until an official theme release supports it unless you plan to fully maintain the theme moving forward Upgrading Milano Store To upgrade Milano Magento Theme, follow these steps: The Easy Way If you haven't modified Moda Store, simply upload the new files and refresh the cache. The Hard Way If you have modified Moda Store, merging your customizations will be required. File differencing applications like Kaleidoscope or DiffFork are useful in conjunction with the changelog. Do not skip releases. The commit notes for each release assume all prior releases were completely applied.
