1 Assessment Report College of Business Management Bus Admin-Human Res Mngt, Bachelor's Expected Outcome 1: Discipline Area Knowledge Students completing the HRMN program will demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the following core areas of Human Resource Management: Equal Employment Opportunity, Job Analysis, Recruitment, Selection, Training and Development, Performance Management, and Compensation and Employee Benefits. Appropriate knowledge is defined as an average score of 75 or greater on the assessment of knowledge in an HRMN core area. Assessment Method 1: Exam Questions Assessment Method Description HRMN faculty developed and/or selected at least 10 multiple-choice questions to assess the HRMN core areas listed above. For those areas where 10 items would have constituted an excessive number of items relative to the amount of class time and textbook coverage devoted to a core area, as few as five items were used. These questions were included in regular exams administered in the classes. In addition to being scored as part of the overall regular exam for student grading purposes, these particular questions were also scored for AACSB and SACS assessment purposes. Data were gathered during Fall, 2012 through Fall 2013 academic terms. Findings Student performance on exam questions for each of the HRMN core disciplinary areas is given below. Equal Employment Opportunity: Number of HRMN Students: 17 Number of Test Items: 5 Mean Student Score on Test Items: 88% For four of the five test items, at least 88% of the students answered the item correctly. However, fewer students (70%) answered a test item correctly which asks students to identify protected groups covered by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. 1
2 Job Analysis, Recruitment, and Selection: Number of Students: 17 Number of Test Items: 107 Mean Student Score on Test Items: 80% Training and Development: Number of HRMN Students: 15 Number of Test Items: 7 essay/short answer questions Mean Score on Test Items: 82.3% with 87% of student scores exceeding 75 Performance Management: Number of HRMN Students: 15 Number of Test Items: 9 essay/short answer questions Mean Score on Test Items: 87.8% with 80% of student scores exceeding 75% Employee Compensation and Benefits: Number of HRMN Students: 27 Number of Test Items: 150 Mean Score on Test Items: 82% Assessments in indicated that one core area (Training and Development) fell below the specified criterion of an average score of 75% or higher. In this year, all averages were at least 80 or greater indicating consistent student performance and some improvement in the area of Training and Development. How did you use findings for improvement? Learning goals for the HRMN core content areas have been met this year. Although scores for the Training and Development content area have improved and the goal has been met, the instructor for the course plans to adjust the schedule of training topics to allow for more projects and experiential exercises in the training Additional Comments Assessment Method 2: Senior Survey Assessment Method Description An exit survey of graduating seniors in the Harbert College of Business is conducted each semester. The goal for the HRMN program is to achieve an average rating of 4.0 or higher on a 5-point scale on the 17 learning outcomes assessed by the Senior Survey. A copy of the Senior Survey is provided in Appendix A. 2
3 Findings Of the 757 College of Business students who graduated during the Fall 2012 through Summer 2013 semesters, 27.2% (N=206) responded to the Senior Survey. The response rate for the 28 Human Resource Management graduates was 25% with 7 completing the survey. The results of the survey must be interpreted with caution because of the small sample size. The major component of the Senior Survey is the assessment of 17 learning outcomes by COB students using a five-point scale (1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree). The statistical results for the 17 learning outcomes for the HRMN graduates and all BSBA graduates are provided in Appendix B. HRMN students average ratings were 4.0 or above on 15 (88%) of the 17 learning outcomes in the assessment year. The two items on which HRMN students did not score 4.0 or above were: 1. The degree program effectively prepared the student to demonstrate spread sheet analysis skills related to field of study All BSBA Senior Mean Rating: 4.0 (N=181) HRMN Senior Mean Rating: 3.9 (N=7) 2. The degree program effectively prepared the student to use quantitative analysis for decision-making. All BSBA: 4.2 HRMN: 3.9 Spread sheet skills has been consistently rated below 4.0 in previous surveys, however, there was improvement as the mean ratings improved from an average of 3.3 and 3.5 in previous surveys to an average of 3.9 in this year s survey ( ). However, in general, compared with the ratings of all BSBA students, the HRMN program received lower average ratings for nine of the 17 items. The HRMN program received higher ratings for one item (program prepared me to utilize creativity; All BSBA = 3.8 and HRMN = 4.0). How did you use findings for improvement? Some improvement has been achieved for the learning outcome to demonstrate spread sheet analysis skills related to my field of study. The faculty will continue to ensure that projects using spread sheets will be included in the senior HRMN courses. In the 2012 report, it was noted that the average rating for (average= 4.5) for written communication skills was improved from previous reports. This trend has continued with an average rating above 4.0 for the 2013 survey as 3
4 well (average = 4.1). The faculty continues to require written assignments in senior HRMN courses. To continue to improve quantitative skills of the students the faculty will include course content and projects on financial impact analyses and return on investment of human resource programs for performance management and training.
