On financial accountings concepts, there was a 35.32% attainment rate. On advanced financial concepts, there was a 42.91% attainment. The department voted to adopt a financial managerial split for teaching the principles of accounting and is considering adding a required lab to be taken concurrently with the first intermediate course. The faculty recommended that a required lab in accounting applications be added to the program to be taken concurrently with the first intermediate financial accounting course. Page 1 of 17

On the cost accounting portion, there was a 65.7% attainment rate. On managerial concepts, there was a 40% attainment rate. On financial accounting concepts, there was a 40.07% attainment rate. On taxation concepts, there was a 32.97% attainment rate. On auditing concepts, there was a 42.96% attainment rate. The faculty recommended that required labs in accounting applications be added to the program to be taken concurrently with the intermediate accounting courses. Page 2 of 17

The undergraduate Major Field Test in Business produced and graded by the Educational Testing Service will be used to determine mastery of the common core. The test will be given to graduating business students. One hundred final examination essays were selected from three sections of the business communication course. From this group, a random selection of twenty papers were read and scored. No spelling errors were observed due to the use of spell checker software. No capitalization errors were observed due to the selfcorrecting nature of Word and WordPerfect. Three punctuation errors were observed involving the omission of commas; (continued) The faculty decided to continue to monitor the final writing project in this class; however, the evaluation criteria will be changed to an evaluation of clarity, style and grammar (including sentence structure) for Fall 2003; Due to the small number of students taking the ETS test and the fact that some of the students that took the exam were sophomores and juniors, no corrective action was initiated as a result of these scores. Our benchmark for success is that students will perform overall at the mean score of 152 reported for institutions that administered the test during Spring 2003 and at the assessment indicators mean scores reported for the institutions that administered the test during Spring the mean score for the 17 students taking the examination was out of a possible 200 producing an attainment of 67.4%. The undergraduate Business test produced and graded by the Educational Testing Service will be used to determine mastery of the common core. Overall, the percentage of acceptable answers for communication skills should exceed 70%; in each category the percentage should exceed 75%; Success in assessing the business core will be 70% attainment overall (average of all student scores for the topic) with no area being below 50% attainment. Overall, the rate of acceptable answers was 71.21%. The benchmark of 75% was met for all areas except grammar; The mean score was out of a possible 200 producing an attainment of 74.0%. All areas scored below the benchmark. Additional emphasis will be placed upon grammar during Spring A similar procedure will be used to evaluate communications skills in Spring 2004, with the following improvement: the Communications faculty will request that students, as part of a late semester examination, respond to a written assignment provided by the COBA SACS/AACSB Standards committee (e.g., a letter to a firm requesting product information and availability). A random sample of responses will be selected and evaluated by the SACS/AACSB Standards committee based upon the criteria used in Fall Some of the students taking the examination had not taken the introductory classes in marketing and finance. The exam will be administered again to graduating (senior) students only. Page 5 of 17

(2) Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of the concepts included in the COBA common business core. (3) Students will perceive program to be a valuable educational experience. (1) Overall, the percentage should exceed 70%; in each category the percentage should exceed 75%; (2) Our benchmark for success is that students will perform overall at the mean scores reported for all institutions that administered the test during Spring 2003; (3) Students will perceive program to be a valuable educational experience. (1) Overall, the percentage of acceptable answers was 67.52%. Grammar failed to meet the benchmark. (2) The mean score for the 119 students taking the examination was versus a mean of 152 for all institutions that administered the test during Spring No area met the benchmark. (3) The independent statistical analysis provided by the survey indicates that students overall perceive program to be of value. Only two major areas of concern emerged from the survey. Students expressed the desire for more night-time courses and students wanted greater accessibility to computer resources. Added emphasis will be placed upon this aspect of communications during Fall In addition, the College of Business will increase the recruiting of faculty in this field. Departments will make appropriate modifications to the content and coverage of the common core courses and the test will be repeated during Fall Scheduling is being reviewed to accommodate both more evening courses and greater accessibility to computing facilities. 7 College of Business Course Final with a Exam major in Management Information Systems (BBA) Dr. Ned Kock Each semester The graduate will have a basic understanding of systems concepts. Success is deemed to be a 70% attainment in each area (average of all being below 50%. The areas are: General system concepts; Networking concepts; Systems management concepts; and Database concepts. Data were collected from 18 seniors in the MIS 4390 class. The results of the test, by knowledge area, are (with Fall 2003 results in parenthesis): General system concepts 72.78% (58.73%); Networking concepts 52.22% (77.78%); Systems management concepts 74.79% (41.67%); Database concepts 44.44% (70.37%). Overall, the average score was 63.82% (448 of 702 questions answered correctly). This is a slight decrease in overall performance compared to Fall 2003 (65.91%) and Spring 2003 (64.43%). New faculty with expertise in the area of Database and Networking will be joining the department in Fall Several teaching assignments have been changed due to other changes in the faculty. During the final examination in an upper division economics course, a passage of reading from a Federal Reserve Press Release will be included with two objective questions assessing the student s understanding of the release. Success is determined to be 70% over all attainment with no question being below 50% attainment. 89% attainment on question 1 and 66% attainment on question 2. The overall average on the two questions was 78% correct. Faculty will review the content and coverage of organizational theory and ethics in order to increase student performance in those fields. 11 College of Business Master of Business (MBA) (Spring 2003) ETS graduate Business exam; Videotaped student presentations Each semester Students completing the masters program in business administration will demonstrate mastery of basic business concepts. Masters graduates of the business administration program must have demonstrated professional level communication skills. (1) The graduate Business test produced and graded by the Educational Testing Service will be used to determine mastery of the common business concepts. Success will be 70% attainment overall (average of all being below 50% attainment. (2) Videotaped presentations will be reviewed and rated to evaluate the speaking ability, use of PowerPoint presentation software, and level of composure. Success is a 70% attainment overall with not less than a 50% attainment in each area. (1) The mean scale score was out of a possible 300 producing an attainment of 78.5%. (2) The overall performance of the class was rated at 72.7% attainment. All areas met the benchmark. Although the goals were met, the faculty decided to continue to administer this test in the Spring 2004 semester. Due to the small number of students taking the examination and the improper administration of the examination, no corrective action was initiated as a result of these scores. An examination designed by a committee of the department faculty will be administered in a graduate class composed of accounting majors. Success will indicate a 75% mastery of the topics with no single area falling below 50%. The test was administered to 14 accounting majors and produced an overall attainment rate of 50.5%. The areas of code of conduct and taxation did not meet the benchmark. The courses in accounting ethics and taxation will be reviewed and the test will be given again in Fall Page 15 of 17

Prior to the administration of the test, the students were given three twenty-minute review sessions as part of the three lectures preceding the administration of the test. Nineteen (19) students submitted responses to the test. The following results were achieved (Fall 2003 results are presented in parenthesis): General Systems Concepts 72.25% (58.04%); Networking Concepts 34.21% (33.08%); Systems Management 77.73% (56.21%); Database Concepts 75.79% (66.15%); Programming Concepts 84.69% (74.83%).
