COURSE DESCRIPTION The major focus of this course is to introduce you to key human resource management principles, procedures and methods that are used by effective, leading-edge companies to attract, retain and develop their people. The activities organised in this course aim to equip you with HR knowledge and skills that will enable you to market and position yourself successfully to prospective employers. With the practical experience and skills that you will acquire from this course, you will be able to immediately add value to your work duties when you begin your career, and be a productive member in your employer s organisation. The objectives of this course are therefore: 1. To introduce you to key human resource management principles, processes and methods that are used effectively by organisations to maintain their competitive edge. 2. To improve your management skills through case analyses, class discussions and presentation; develop team building skills through a group-based project. 3. To acquaint you with the current literature in human resource management to prepare you for higher education in the future and continuous learning. 1
2 CLASS APPROACH To enable you to master the knowledge and skills in human resource management, the class approach includes: 1. lectures and discussions to learn key human resource management principles, processes and methods, 2. analyses of cases and experiential exercises, 3. and a group-based project. The objective of the approach aims to enable you to attain as much practical experience as possible within the short time frame of 5 weeks. COURSE EVALUATION The ultimate aim of this course is to enable you to acquire some marketable skills that will allow you to be competitive in the job market when you graduate. Here is how you will be assessed: Exam 1 Exam 2 Group Project Presentation of Group Project Class Participation Total 30 points 10 points points A. Exams The purpose of the exams is to ensure that you read the materials and understand the principles involved in human resource management. The exam format can take any form, such as listing down of key principles on a specific topic, a short essay question, or a long essay. Exam 1 covers to following topics: Introduction to HRM Strategic HRM Job Analysis HR Planning Recruitment Selection Exam 2 covers the following topics: Training & Career Development Performance Management Base Pay Incentives Benefits 2
3 B. Group Project The objective of the group project is to enable you to understand best HR practices in a high performing organization as well as to learn to do research. You will work in teams of 5. Be creative in sourcing for information. You can use library resources, such as electronic databases (e.g., ABI/Inform, LEXIS-NEXIS), periodicals, newspaper clippings, internet information (e.g. company websites) or interview professionals in the company or industry. Write a page report on the HR practices of the organization that you have chosen. Your report should include the following information: 1. Describe what the company does. 2. Give a brief history of the company and relate the company s history with its human resource management practices. 3. Why is the firm a high performing firm? 4. How do the firm s human resource management practices enable the firm to be a high performing organization? 5. Based on your research, what do you think are the key human resource management problems or opportunities facing the company in the next 1-3 years? 6. Using the concepts and theories learned in this course, what recommendations would you make to the organization to enable it to maintain its leadership position in its industry by solving its human resource management issues. Please form teams of 5. You may choose your own team members. At the end of the semester, please submit a page typewritten report that is double-spaced. In fairness to other students, late work is not accepted. Your report is due on 5 August, at the end of class. The grade given to you on this project will be determined by the grade given to the project and your contribution to the group effort. The latter will be determined by peer evaluation. For example, suppose the grade on the group project is 25/30. For Individual A, if he/she obtains an evaluation of 90%, 90%, 80%, and 100% from the other group members, an average is taken, which is 90% in this case. The grade that is given to Individual A is therefore, 90%x25=22.5 points. 3
4 C. Presentation You will give a class presentation of your group project. 10% of your grade is assigned to this presentation. Your presentation grade is adjusted by peer evaluation. The purpose of the presentation is threefold: first, to give you practice on presentation skills in a safe, classroom environment; second, to share with the class, the efforts and hard work that you have put in on the HR practices of a high performing organization; and third, it is an opportunity for you to review some HRM principles for the upcoming exam. Please form teams of 5 individuals. You may choose your own team members. Each group will be given minutes to make a presentation to the board of directors (comprising the class members) of the company they have analyzed. Each team should bring with them enough copies of an executive summary and a short description of the company to be distributed to classmates. Each team should have no more than 8-10 slides. Presentation slides should be used as a talking aid rather than to be read from. The format of the presentations will be as follows: Purpose of the presentation Analysis of key issues faced Recommendations D. Class Participation A major part of your learning will occur during class. Hence, attendance and class participation, particularly during case discussions and experiential exercises will be noted. 4
