2 The Hong Kong Polytechnic University The origin of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) can be traced back to 1937 with the founding of the first publicly-funded post-secondary technical institution in Hong Kong the Government Trade School. The School was renamed the Hong Kong Technical College in In August 1972, the Hong Kong Polytechnic was formally established, taking over the campus and staff of the Hong Kong Technical College. The Institution assumed full university status in November In terms of number of students, it is the largest tertiary institution in Hong Kong funded by the HKSAR Government through the University Grants Committee. It has a total student population of over 32,000 by headcount in 2013/14. School of Professional Education and Executive Development Officially formed by PolyU in 1999, the School of Professional Education and Executive Development (PolyU SPEED) has been actively developing and delivering a wide range of professionally-oriented programmes that are relevant to individual advancement and wider socio-economic needs. The PolyU-SPEED qualification provides graduates with an excellent foundation for career development and further studies. The programmes described in this brochure are top-up honours degree programmes specially designed for holders of Associate Degree or Higher Diploma for further studies towards undergraduate degree level.

Most of the classes, studios and workshops will be delivered at the HKAS premises. Aims and Objectives The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Applied and Media Arts provides a creative, experimental and interdisciplinary study of applied and media arts, developing students as creative practitioners with critical framework for analytical reflection of the practices in the culture and creative industries. Career Opportunities Graduates are expected to become reflective contributors in their respective fields, capable of pursuing careers as professional designers, corporate image creators and media artists. They will be able to capitalise on their all-round trainings in creativity and aesthetic sensibility, which are essential elements of success in a knowledge-based economy. Entry Requirements A recognised Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma or equivalent qualification in related disciplines. Applicants from unrelated disciplines but with demonstrated foundation knowledge in applied and media arts may also be considered. Those who do not possess the above-mentioned qualifications but have reached the age of 25 at commencement of study may apply as mature applicants. Mature applicants should possess relevant working experience in supervisory/ managerial positions and have completed post-secondary studies in related fields. 5 Programme Structure Students are required to complete the following requirements with satisfactory results for an honours degree: Requirements General University Requirements (GUR) No. of Credits 9-18 credits 3 broadening subjects (including 1 designated as China-related) +, 3 credits each 9 credits Up to 3 Language and Communication Requirements (LCR) subjects (2 in English & 1 in Chinese), 3 credits each (for students who have not met the equivalent standard of undergraduate degree LCR based on their prior sub-degree studies only)* Discipline Specific Requirements (DSR) (Please refer to the table below for details.) 0-9 credits 51 credits Compulsory 10 subjects, 3 credits each (except Graduation Project which carries 6 credits) 33 credits Elective 6 subjects, 3 credits each 18 credits Work-Integrated Education (WIE) (for full-time students only) Nil 300 hours of placement (Relevant work experience accumulated during or after sub-degree studies may be considered for fulfilment of WIE. Professional Recognition This programme is an upgrade of the Bachelor of Arts in Housing Management programme fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) leading to the CIH Chartered Membership upon the fulfilment of the relevant professional experience requirement and will be subject to further validation by the CIH. The main objective of the programme is to provide specialised education in the field of marketing and public relations. The programme prepares students for employment in a wide range of business sectors and functions in Hong Kong and other parts of the world. 20 Entry Requirements A recognised Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma or equivalent qualification. Those who do not possess the above-mentioned qualifications but have reached the age of 25 at commencement of study may apply as mature applicants. Mature applicants should possess relevant working experience in supervisory/ managerial positions and have completed post-secondary studies in related fields. They will also be required to pass an admission test and demonstrate to the Admission Interview Panel their ability to complete the programme.
