Topics will include but are not limited to health content relevant to college students, campus resources, presentation skills, and program development skills. This is a non repeatable course. No preparation courses are required. 2 College life presents its own special problems and concerns as students are introduced to new experiences and choices. Many students find the adjustments to be stressful, demanding and challenging. To cope, some students engage in unhealthy behaviors such as poor nutrition, alcohol misuse, smoking, illegal drugs, unprotected sex and unhealthy relationships. It is important for students to learn about healthy choices and see the positive influence their choices have on their academic, social and personal success. The Peer Health Education program is designed to help students increase their awareness and knowledge of healthy choices and behaviors. The UMBC Peer Health Educators are a unit within University Health Services Office of Health Education. The Peer Health Education Program is based on the belief that students can be highly effective in influencing the health attitudes and behaviors of other students. Peers are highly valuable in identifying risky behavior and subsequent behavior change, as well as providing leadership and role modeling and in correcting misinformation and misperceptions among their fellow students. Peer Health Educators can teach other students self-responsibility and personal power through their education and outreach. The Peer Health Education Program is multi-faceted; therefore, each semester students participate, the requirements increase. The goal is for each Peer to be trained to enhance specific skills such as facilitating programs and events, active listening, presenting and public speaking, optimal decisionmaking, etc. Ultimately, Peer Health Educators are role models for other students in areas of healthy decision making and behaviors on UMBC s campus. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY By enrolling in this course, each student assumes the responsibilities of an active participant in UMBC's scholarly community in which everyone's academic work and behavior are held to the highest standards of honesty. Cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, and helping others to commit these acts are all forms of academic dishonesty, and they are wrong. Academic misconduct could result in disciplinary action that may include, but is not limited to, suspension or dismissal. To read the full Student Academic Conduct Policy, consult UMBC policies, or the Faculty Handbook (Section 14.3). GOALS To help students understand the importance of healthy lifestyle behaviors. To increase students abilities to identify risky behaviors and manage their own health. To provide students with the information and support needed to assist them in positive lifestyle changes. To promote holistic health and wellness themes on UMBC s campus through the sponsorship of national, international and other health awareness events. To provide information about University Health Services, The Counseling Center, the Women s Center and any other office needed at UMBC. QUALIFICATIONS Ability to serve as a role model for other students on campus. Ability to be credible and supportive to the diversity of students represented on UMBC s campus. 2
3 Ability to communicate in a clear, organized and supportive manner, both orally and written. An interest and willingness to perform all aspects of educational programming. Acceptance of diverse populations of people with value systems different from one s own. Ability to organize work in a timely and thorough manner. Ability to be self-motivated and punctual. An intellectual curiosity and capacity to learn. Ability to ask appropriate questions and seek assistance when needed. Ability to respect and maintain the privacy/confidentiality of others. OBJECTIVES Identify and discuss factors that affect health choices and behaviors. Explore personal attitudes, beliefs and values concerning various health issues and how they relate to your roles as Peer Health Educators. Demonstrate clear and effective communication and listening skills. Develop and enhance your public speaking and group leadership skills. Identify campus and community resources and services for various health issues. Discuss services available at UHS and other relevant services on and off campus. Discuss and present health information in a professional and nonbiased fashion. REQUIREMENTS Attendance: All students will attend a class/meeting once a week. For all Peers, coming to class is part of your grade and attendance and participation in all weekly class meetings is required. The content information will prepare you for programming throughout the semester. Peer Health Educators are expected to report on time for each class session. Peers are not allowed any unexcused absences. Each unexcused absence will result in a 10 point reduction from your final grade. See your instructor if you have any questions or concerns about attendance. Peer Health Programs: One of the goals of the Peer Health Education program is to learn how to conduct health education programs/seminars. The only way to learn this skill is to do it. Therefore, when you sign up for a program, it is your responsibility to make sure you are prepared for the program. This includes studying the protocol ahead of time, discussing with your co-presenter who will take certain parts of the protocol, gathering your materials, etc. First semester Peers are required to complete at least 2 educational programs. For every program, each Peer must complete the 1 page program statistic and self/partner evaluation sheet (located on black shelf). Each completed program is worth 25 points. This sheet must be turned into your instructor s mailbox within 1 week of your program, or you will not receive points for completion. Feel free to expand on your thoughts using an additional sheet of paper and attaching it to the evaluation. You will not receive a grade for the program if your paper is not turned in on time. Additional programs done beyond the minimum requirement will count as service hours. **If you are signed up for a program and cannot make it at the last minute, it is YOUR responsibility to find another Peer to cover the program. If you do not, you will receive a zero for the program and will not be able to make it up. You must also contact the instructor to let them know of the change if you are unable to make it to your program. 3
4 Service Hours: Service hours include the following activities: staffing an informational table, participating in activities with UHS staff and time spent in planning and organizing campus-wide health promotion events. Other tasks may count but must be approved by the instructor prior to the completion of the hours. Please remember to keep track of your hours and make sure you are meeting your semester requirements. First semester Peers are required to complete 10 service hours. Office Hours: Peer Health Educators are required to commit to one office hour a week during the semester. Twelve hours are required for the semester, however there may be up to 15 or 16 weeks comprising one semester, which allows for flexibility or for Peers to stop coming towards end of the semester. During office hours, Peers will conduct Women s Seminars; work on special projects needed for upcoming programs and events as well as other administrative tasks assigned by Health Education staff. Office hours will be held in the Health Education office, and Peers will arrange the time of their office hour in the beginning of the semester according to their schedule. Therefore, you will have the same office hour time each week. Office hours can be changed if 24 hours notice is given to Mickey, and if there are no women s seminars already scheduled. Mickey or another health education staff member will alert you at least 1 day in advance if there is women s seminar scheduled during your office hour. If a women s seminar has already been scheduled and you need to change your office hour, it is your responsibility to find another Peer to conduct the seminar for you. If you do not show up for your office hour, or do not give 24 hours notice for changing your office hour, you will not be allowed to make up this hour and will receive a zero for that week and will not be allowed to make it up at the end of the semester. Please note that missing or changing an office hour should only be done for emergency situations. You should not be continually changing office hours throughout the semester. Exams, Homework and Assignments: Exams are scheduled at the end of each content area. Our three exams will consist of short answer and fill in the blank questions. There will be a cumulative final exam at the end of the semester as well. For all Peers, late assignments are never accepted - you will receive a zero if an assignment is not turned in on time. Please use MLA format for all typed assignments. 1 st Semester Peer Assignments will consist of the following: - An assignment on learning and understanding campus resources related to all dimensions health and wellness - Two reflection assignments about sensitive topics discussed in the Peer Health Education program - A detailed and well-researched program proposal to implement in our program in future semesters All Peer Meetings: Every so often, all Peer Health Educators will meet for an All Peer Meeting. At this meeting, we will 4
5 discuss upcoming programs, events, updates and announcements, as well as take the opportunity to participate in some team building exercises or other important trainings. Dates for these meetings will be announced. These meetings are required. Grading: As listed in the Undergraduate Course Catalog, the following letter symbols will be assigned in this course: A indicates superior achievement; B, good performance; C, adequate performance; D, minimal acceptable achievement; F, failure; I, incomplete work.
