1 SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT Course: SBNM 5111 Managerial Accounting Academic Year: 2015/2016 Semester: Spring Quad B Credit Hours: 2 Professor: Paulette Phillips, CPA Phone: (708) Availability: I will be available on campus before class and I am more than willing to stay after class each week to provide additional help. Required Course Materials: Managerial Accounting, 14th Edition Garrison, Noreen & Brewer, ISBN Course Overview: Managerial accounting focuses on the use of accounting by internal users or managers. Upon completion of the course, students will have developed an understanding of the management strategies for planning, decision-making, cost-determination and control. Students will also develop an understanding of various aspects of cost accounting including variable costs, fixed costs, direct costs, indirect costs, job costing, process costing, cost volume profit analysis and activity-based costing. An examination of the ethical issues encountered when making accounting decisions is undertaken throughout the course. Course Objectives: After completing the course, students should be able to: Identify the major differences and similarities between financial and managerial accounting. Define and give examples of cost classifications associated with the behavior of costs, the allocation of costs and using cost in decision-making. Prepare a schedule of cost of goods manufactured. Compute predetermined overhead rates and demonstrate their use in a job-order costing system. Prepare the journal entries necessary in a job-order costing system. Prepare a Production Report as used in a process costing system. Demonstrate how fixed and variable costs behave and how to use that information to predict costs. Demonstrate the use of contribution margins to predict profitability. 1 P a g e
2 Prepare income statements using both variable costing and absorption costing. Demonstrate the use of activity-based costing. Prepare a budget for companies in a variety of industries. Demonstrate the use of standards in analyzing budget vs. actual data Course Methodology: The main components of our weekly class will be discussion with some lecture and homework examples. Students are expected to complete all chapter reading assignments prior to class and be prepared to discuss the topics. Each class we will start with reviewing the homework problems related to the prior week s topics. We will then review the new material for the week with a combination of lecture, examples and discussion. Homework and Group Presentations: My viewpoint is that homework assignments are a learning tool and, as such, I will not be collecting them, but we will discuss the assignments in class. After class, solutions for the homework will be placed on Moodle so that students can check their work. It is imperative for your success in this class that you stay current on the homework. If I determine that students are not taking responsibility for the homework, I will begin collecting and grading the homework. On the first night of class, students will be put in groups and throughout the quad each group will have two opportunities to teach one of the assigned homework problems to the rest of the class. The presentations will be scheduled in advance. Class Participation: The class participation grade is a subjective grade based on my observation of your attendance in class as well as your preparedness and contribution to the learning environment of the class. Merely coming to class is not sufficient to receive all participation points. You must actively engage in the class on a regular basis in order to receive full points. Exams: There will be two take-home exams which will be distributed and due as indicated in the weekly assignments. The exams are individual assignments and while you may use notes and the book, it is expected that you will not work with other people this includes other class members as well as outside colleagues. The exams should be prepared in Excel and submitted through Moodle by the designated due date and time. 2 P a g e

This includes all exams. For every 24 hour period that an exam is late, without advanced approval, five percentage points will be deducted from the exam score. 3 P a g e
4 POLICY STATEMENTS Academic Honesty In keeping with our Christian heritage and commitment, North Park University and the School of Business and Nonprofit Management are committed to the highest possible ethical and moral standards. Just as we will constantly strive to live up to these high standards, we expect our students to do the same. To that end, cheating of any sort will not be tolerated. Students who are discovered cheating are subject to discipline up to and including failure of a course and expulsion. Our definition of cheating includes but is not limited to: 1. Plagiarism the use of another s work as one s own without giving credit to the individual. This includes using materials from the internet. 2. Copying another s answers on an examination. 3. Deliberately allowing another to copy one s answers or work. 4. Signing an attendance roster for another who is not present. In the special instance of group work, the instructor will make clear his/her expectations with respect to individual vs. collaborative work. A violation of these expectations may be considered cheating as well. For further information on this subject you may refer to the Academic Dishonesty section of the University s online catalog. In conclusion, it is our mission to prepare each student for a life of significance and service. Honesty and ethical behavior are the foundation upon which such lives are built. We therefore expect the highest standards of each student in this regard. Attendance Policy for Graduate Courses The graduate courses in the SBNM are all 7 weeks in length. Missing one class session is allowed without penalty as long as all readings and assignments are made up by the student within a reasonable time period (the following week). Failing to log into an online course site for an entire week is allowed, but a penalty may be applied at the instructor s discretion. Missing a second class session is allowed only in unusual circumstances by prior arrangement with the instructor. Since this represents almost 30% of the engagement time for the course, the student runs the risk of receiving a lower overall grade for the class. Faculty are encouraged to drop the course grade by a full letter grade in this situation. A student who misses three classes (or the equivalent two weeks for an online class) will automatically fail the course, unless the student drops the course before the seventh week of class. Students who drop a course will be held responsible for tuition, based upon the current North Park University refund policy outlined in the University Catalog. Attendance Policy for Undergraduate Courses Attendance and participation are vital. Thus, students are expected to attend every class session, and to arrive on time tardiness is undesirable and disruptive to your fellow classmates. This course has a strict requirement of documented, advance notification. If you are unable to attend any class session, you are to inform me (preferably by ) prior to that session. You need to provide a reason for your absence. Failure to provide advance notification will result in an unexcused absence.
