4 southeas A PROFILE OF THE SOUTHEAS OVERVIEW Many of these states form part of the Old Dixie and are rich in the south s traditions, culture and legacies. Geographically, the region is primarily rural, though large cities like Memphis, Louisville and Nashville also form the landscapes. Historically the region was considered slow paced and old fashioned. However an increasingly lively culture, a near tropical climate and warm hospitality are all contributing to the fast paced evolution of the region.

6 SOUTHEAST USA GEORGIA OVERVIEW With its summery climate, interesting landscapes and varied selection of greenery, Georgia is the last of the 13 original colonies. Like much of the southeast of America, Georgia has had a troubled history. However an industrial boom in the late 20th century and the birth of Coca-Cola has helped the state to become truimphant. Atlanta, is a lively and fast paced metropolis, and the states industrial hub. Famous for Coca-Cola, CNN and the 1996 Olympics, Atlanta is truly a success story of the economic boom. More subdued is the scenic Savannah. Considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the country, Savannah s landscape is a rich tapestry of plush homes, horse drawn carriages and impressive architecture. Venturing north east is the rural city of Dahlonega. Here the Blue Ridge Mountain Range dominates the landscape, complete with lush forestry and waterfalls.

12 SOUTHEAST USA LOUISIANA OVERVIEW The state of Louisiana has taken much of its character from year old traditions and its colorful history. It is celebrated for its fine food, jazz, and striking panorama, amongst other things. Rich in history, Louisiana has a largely French heritage and was named for Louis XIV by French settlers. The state was colonized by both Spain and France before being officially acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of After becoming a state in 1812, Louisiana saw much action involving the Civil War and the epic battle for civil rights played out in the following decades. To best appreciate the Louisianan culture, admire the sublime beauty of the plantations along the Mississippi or the colourful Cajun country. For something more lively, visit the bustling city of New Orleans. The French Quarter is the city s main attraction, and is buzzing with bars, restaurants and markets.

21 Admissions Requirements for International Students International student applicants with superior scholastic records and English proficiency will be considered for admission as a freshman or transfer student. International students who have never attended a post-secondary education institution must apply as a freshman (first-year student) and must have the equivalent of an American high school diploma. International students who have attended any post-secondary level institution must apply as a transfer student. Both freshman and transfer students must have earned the equivalent of at least a 3.0/ B average in the U.S., four-point grading system on all academic course work, and transferable credit, respectively. International students applying for graduate admissions must have the equivalent of an American bachelor s degree from an accredited U.S. institution. Those with superior scholastic records will be considered for admission by the Graduate Faculty of the department in which the student hopes to study. Students must demonstrate English proficiency, must provide a complete and accurate chronological outline of all previous college-level education and have earned the equivalent of a 3.00/ B grade point average ( A = 4.0) or better on all college-level work attempted. The student must also provide acceptable GRE or GMAT test scores. Those with exceptional scholastic records may be considered for graduate assistantships which provide financial support for graduate study. An applicant whose native language is not English and/or an applicant who has been educated outside of the U.S. in a country or province where English is not the only official language will be required to submit a sufficient score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
