1 Syllabus Course Information and Policies Course title: ART1300: Online Art Appreciation for Non-Art Majors Course number: ART and.026 Course description: ART1300 Art Appreciation is an introduction to art for non-art majors. The course begins by introducing the materials used to create works of art and architecture. It then teaches students the terminology required to study art and introduces analytical tools. The remainder of the course demonstrates how architecture, painting, sculpture, and the minor arts have been used throughout history. This is accomplished through a thematic presentation of common issues behind the production of works of arts (survival, religion, politics, the self, society) and an exploration of how different cultures have responded to these concerns. 2 Course Goals 1. to demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of works of art. 2. to understand those works as expressions of individual and human values within an historical and social context. 3. to develop an appreciation for the aesthetic principles that guide or govern art. 4. to demonstrate knowledge of the influence of art on intercultural experiences. Attendance Policy Make up assessments and assignments will only be scheduled WITH A VERIFIABLE, TIMELY, UNIVERSITY-SANCTIONED WRITTEN EXCUSE. Since this is an online course, "attendance" is not an issue. However, the course follows a schedule and you must keep up. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO WORK ON THIS CLASS FOR UP TO TWELVE HOURS EVERY WEEK. Late Policy Late work is not accepted. Period. Students must keep track of all due dates and exam dates. 5 Assessment Your performance on the evaluation tools listed above will be assessed based on the following general criteria: 1. following all of the instructions and completing the assignment correctly 2. applying learned information to an unknown body of images or new situation 3. correctly employing terms learned in the course regarding such matters as form, content, function, and iconography 4. demonstrating a command of the concepts learned in the course regarding such matters as form, content, function, and iconography 5. clarity and informational value of written assignments 6. professional presentation of images and ideas. Additional Information Note The instructor reserves the right to alter this syllabus, due dates and the calendar of actvities at her discretion. Students enrolled in this course will not be exposed to any significant hazards and are not likely to suffer any bodily injury.

6 Students in this class will be informed of any potential health hazards or potential bodily injury connected with the use of any materials and/or processes and will be instructed how to proceed without danger to themselves or others. Technology Failures "HELP! My computer crashed while I was completing an assignment or assessment (quiz)? What do I do?" First, consult the Help Documents found in the Course Help section of your homepage. If these documents do not offer a workable solution, you must contact the UNT Help Desk immediately (940) They will send you a receipt that confirms your request for help. Keep this for your records. The Helpdesk's regular business hours are Monday through Thursday 8:00 am - Midnight, Friday 8:00 am - 8:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Sunday 1:00 pm - Midnight. You should also notify your Teaching Assistant and the Instructor immediately. "I had an assignment/quiz due and the Internet/Blackboard went down!" If the university experiences a widespread problem, your instructor will evaluate whether to grant the entire course an extension. If the outage lasts for a very short period well before the deadline, the instructor will not likely grant an extension. If the outage is prolonged or occurs just before the deadline, the instructor will likely extend the deadline. DO NOT ASSUME THAT YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EXTENSION SIMPLY BECAUSE THERE WAS AN OUTAGE. SUBMIT YOUR WORK AS SOON AS YOU ARE ABLE. If you have a technology failure caused by your computer or Internet connection (not a university-wide problem), follow these steps: o log out of your browser, re-boot your computer, and then log back back in to the class and the assignment or assessment. o If rebooting doesn't work, QUICKLY move to another computer to complete the work. Come to campus, go to your local public library, borrow a friend's computer. This is the only way to complete an assessment (quiz). Because technology problems can occur, give yourself lots of TIME to complete your assessments and assignments. DO NOT put off the work until just before the deadline.
