The mid-infrared detector: an uncooled microbolometer array THE BASELINE DETECTOR FOR THERMAP: uncooled microbolometer array (640x480, 25µm pixels) from the french company ULIS It is also de baseline detector of:! its competitor instrument, ATMS! the near-infrared camera for JEM-EUSO JAXA mission and we are part of its consortium, and we are in charge of the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) of the Detector.

Detector most important properties! Good sensitivity, low noise level in the 8-15 microns region! Uncooled microbolometer array NO NEED FOR COOLING! Low mass, low consumption! Qualified TRL 5

Next November ESA will make a call for Documents of interest for payload studies for MP-R We will be part of THERMAP proposal (in charge of the ECU of the detector) We also have a verbal agreement to be in the competitor instrument ATMS proposed by U. of Oxford

JEM-EUSO JEM-EUSO will be on orbit on the International Space Station (ISS). It observes transient luminous phenomena taking place in the earth's atmosphere caused by highenergetic particles coming from space. The sensor is a super wide-field telescope that detects extreme energy It is facing Phase B1, the System Requirement Review (SRR) was delivered March Start operations 2016 JEM-EUSO includes an Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS). to observe the Earth s atmosphere continuously providing key parameters for the optical yield determination AMS will integrate and Infrared Camera used to detect the presence of clouds and to obtain the cloud top altitude during the observation period of the JEM-EUSO main instrument. The IC is a Spanish project (leaded by M. D. Rodríguez Frías, U. Alcalá de Henares) We are in charge of the detector electronic control unit (ECU) of the IC Our participation is founded by AYA in 2012 ( )

Tasks defined to be done at the IAC for JEM-EUSO WP1: To a detector test experiment to perform a series of tests to answer the following questions:! What is the effect of the operating temperature on the performances, and what is the acceptable range?! Which thermal stability is required to reach a given absolute radiometric accuracy?! What is the dynamic range of the detector?! What is its sensitivity?! What is the spatial homogeneity of the detector response?! How long is the readout time and how fast can the detector be operated? The experiment will also serve as a test bench of other parts of the instrument, e.g., the optics. WP2: To do PDR design of the Electronic Control Unit WP3: To built a breadboard model of the Electronic Control Unit, to demonstrate the viability of our design.

The detector test experiment Mounted in LISA, the IAC test-bench for detector calibration and characterization CAMERA BLACK BODY! We use a camera built by INO that use the ULIS array.! An optics from JANOS has been installed! A new Black Body is coming (-40 to 100, cost )! Test are ongoing (with the help of a summer student)! Will be used to test the breadboard of THERMAP, ATMS and the IC of JEM-EUSO

The IAC Climate Chamber Environment controlled tests will be done in the IAC Climate Chamber! The Climate Chamber is able to control both Temperature and Humidity.! Temperature control range goes from -20ºC to +50ºC (+/- 0.5ºC).! Humidity control range goes from 5% to 95% (+/- 1-2%).

The electronics needed for the detector Should consist of:! An amplifier to adapt the dynamical range to the Analog Digital Converter (ADC)! An ADC! A sequencer to manage these electronics! The control command and output interface

The electronics developed for the detector The electronic is going to be developed and built by an external company in cooperation with the IAC! Based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) that allow to implement application specific programs! Control will be able to reach the JEM-EUSO requirements

Development of the ECU breadboard: status! The breadboard model por JEM-EUSO is expected to be built end of summer 2012 (designed and built at the IAC)! Conceptual design of the breadboard ECU is almost DONE.! The detector and some of the electronic parts have already been purchased and are in the laboratory.! PDR for the space design of the ECU for JEM-EUSO should be ready November 2012 (by an external company based on BBM design) This development is helping us with our participation in MP-R

WP3: breadboard model of the Electronic Control Unit Contrato con empresa externa y supervisión por Marcos Reyes (gestor) y Enrique Joven.

Licandro is chairman of a MP-R WG Coordination of observing campaigns to fully characterize all possible targets Compilation of all existing data Search for new possible targets Cooperate in the make of the needed documentation, e.g. the Science Requirements Document

Thanks to: Julia de León

Spectroscopy at mid-infrared wavelengths! The way of obtaining sizes, albedos and thermal inertia (also photometry).! Diagnostic spectral region for silicates! Very difficult, very few is already done

Spectroscopy at mid-infrared: The Trojans Important to determine size and albedo, study regolith and also silicate composition! Emery et al. (2006): fine grained,low-density regolith with a fairy castle structure emits in a manner similar to an extended coma, perhaps from extreme porosity or fine grained silicates are imbedded in a matrix of material that is relatively transparent in the mid infrared.! Will Marco Polo land on a surface like that of 9P/Tempel 1? Probable if we go to a D-,P-type asteroid.

Spectroscopy at mid-infrared wavelengths: comets and ACOs Campins et al. In prep.! Hidalgo present silicate emission like comets and Trojans

Spitzer observations of (65) Cybele Licandro et al. (2011)

Spitzer observations of Themis family asteroids

Conclusions! MP-R is a great mission: will answer key questions of the Cosmic Mission program; it is a technological challenge crucial for future ESA missions; It reflects the spirit of space missions involving the direct exploration of new worlds! A thermal mapper is needed to attain MP-R in particular to complete a global and local characterization of the asteroid! The IAC group has an advanced project to provide the ECU of the detector for both projected thermal mappers, and the support of the instrumental area to do it.! The IAC has an active scientific group with experience in the research on primitive asteroids, in particular in the study of their thermal properties. This ensures that you will make good use of data obtained from the mission! The IAC group can also help other instruments leaded by Spanish researchers if needed. The IAC is interested in detectors for space use.
