1 Updating Tape Drive Firmware December 12, 2012 This document provides information about updating the firmware of your tape library s drive firmware. As a good practice, all of our Ark tape customers are strongly urged to make sure that their LTO tape library and drive firmware is up-to-date. EditShare has produced a document that guides users in checking for and installing firmware for supported tape libraries. The most accurate, detailed, and up-to-date information and instructions for updating tape drive firmware will always be in the documentation provided by the tape library manufacturer; this guide provides a central location for common firmware-related tasks. See the following sections: Identifying the Tape Drive Model and Firmware Version Checking for and Acquiring New Drive Firmware Stop Ark Activity Upgrading the Tape Drive Firmware Identifying the Tape Drive Model and Firmware Version To determine whether you need to upgrade your tape drive firmware, you must find the current firmware version of the drive and compare it to the newest firmware from the manufacturer.

2 IDENTIFYING THE TAPE DRIVE MODEL AND FIRMWARE VERSION Quantum SuperLoader 3 and Dell PowerVault 124T 1. On the library's operator panel, scroll to Status, and then press Enter. 2. From the Status submenu, scroll to Autoloader, and then press Enter. 3. From the Drive submenu, scroll to Version, and then press Enter. A list of messages appears. These messages may include: Product Type: Indicates the type of drive installed. Version: Indicates the firmware version of the drive. Quantum i40/i80 There are two ways to view the drive firmware version on a Quantum i40 or i80 tape library: from the operator panel on the library or the library s web client. Operator Panel 1. On the library's operator panel, select Reports, then select About Library. 2. Press Next to scroll through all the screens and note the firmware version. Web Client 1. Enter the IP address of your tape library into your web browser's address bar. 2. From the web client, select Reports > System Information. 2

3 CHECKING FOR AND ACQUIRING NEW DRIVE FIRMWARE Spectra T50e 1. Log into the library as a user with superuser or administrator privileges. 2. Click MENU, then select Maintenance > Utilities. The Basic Utilities screen displays. 3. Select Display Firmware Versions, then click Select. The Description screen shows the details for the utility Checking for and Acquiring New Drive Firmware Check your tape library manufacturer s website or contact the manufacturer for the most up-to-date firmware, documentation, and firmware update information. NOTE: Your manufacturer may require a valid support agreement to download or install firmware updates. If you encounter problems acquiring or installing new firmware, contact the tape library manufacturer. 4 STOP ARK ACTIVITY Spectra T50e To check for a new firmware version, go to and click the Drive Firmware tab. To download firmware from SpectraLogic, create a support portal account (requires the tape library s serial number), login to the support portal, go to then click the Drive Firmware tab. Stop Ark Activity Before performing any firmware upgrade operations on the tape drive or library, stop all Ark activity. EditShare recommends shutting the Ark server down if possible; however, if the Ark server shares other roles that cannot be stopped, you can use the Ark Assistant to stop Ark services. 1. If you have not already done so, stop all backup operations, remove all tapes from the drives you are upgrading, and stop the backup application. 2. On your EditShare Ark Tape server, stop any active backup and restore jobs. 3. Open the Control Panel. 4. Open Ark Assistant. 5. Click on "Troubleshooting", then click OK. 6. Click on "Stop services", then click OK. 7. Enter the IP address of the Ark Tape server. 8. Select the Ark Tape service, then click OK to stop the Ark Tape service. After completing the firmware update, you can also restart Ark services from the Ark Assistant. 4

5 UPGRADING THE TAPE DRIVE FIRMWARE Upgrading the Tape Drive Firmware Quantum SuperLoader 3, Dell PowerVault 124T 1. Enter the IP address of your loader into the web browser of a workstation connected to the same network as the tape library. The on-board remote management interface appears 2. Click Browse to navigate to the host system for the update file. The file should end in an.img extension. 3. From any page of the web client interface, click the Updates heading. The Firmware Update screen displays. 4. Click Upload. 5. Click OK in response to the confirmation box. The autoloader automatically uploads the new code and processes it to the system. Quantum Scalar i40/i80 Tape drive firmware is bundled with library firmware. When you install library firmware, tape drive firmware is installed at the same time. During a library firmware upgrade or downgrade, the library autolevels tape drive firmware. Autoleveling automatically updates firmware on all installed tape drives, keeping all tape drives of the same type at the same firmware level. Autoleveling will not occur if a tape drive has a cartridge loaded in it. Make sure to unload all tape drives before updating library firmware. If you are upgrading firmware, and you previously installed a tape drive firmware patch separately from library firmware, you must delete the patch from your library before your tape drives can autolevel to the tape drive firmware you are installing with the library firmware upgrade. 1. Unload tape cartridges from all tape drives installed in the library. 2. Capture a library snapshot (recommended for troubleshooting in case there is a problem with the upgrade). From the Web client, select Tools > Capture Snapshot and complete the screens that follow. 5

6 UPGRADING THE TAPE DRIVE FIRMWARE 3. Save the library configuration. From the Web client, select Tools > Save/Restore Configuration > Save System Configuration. 4. From the Web client, select Tools > Update Library Firmware. The Tools - Update Library Firmware screen appears. 5. Click Browse. 6. Locate the library firmware file and click Open. 7. Click Apply. A confirmation dialog box appears asking you to confirm that you want to update the library firmware and restart the library. 8. Click OK to continue with the library firmware update operation. NOTE: After the update process starts, you must wait until it completes. This takes several minutes after the Web client logs you out. Do not attempt to interrupt the process in any way, and do not power cycle the library. Loss of data or library operability could occur. The Progress Window appears. The Progress Window contains information on the action, elapsed time, and status of the requested operation. The Progress Window closes automatically and the library shuts down and then reboots. Wait for the library to completely reboot before logging back in. 9. Clear the Web browser cache before logging in to the library. See your Web browser s documentation for instructions on how to clear the cache. 10. Log in to the library. NOTE: If the library is still in the process of restarting, the Web browser may display an error page or message when you try to access or log into the Web client. 11. Verify the library firmware installed successfully by viewing the About Scalar i40/i80 report (on the Web client, select Reports > About > Scalar i40/i80). 12. Save the library configuration again. From the Web client, select Tools > Save/Restore Configuration > Save System Configuration. SpectraLogic T50e Your library must either still be under warranty or you must have a current service contract with Spectra Logic Technical Support before you can perform BlueScale updates, including firmware updates for the library components. The BlueScale Software Service key associated with your service contract must be entered into the System Configuration screen before you can update the library. 1. Stop all library- and host-based operations. 2. On your EditShare Ark Tape server, stop any active backup and restore jobs. 6

7 TECHNICAL SUPPORT INFORMATION 3. Open the Control Panel. 4. Open Ark Assistant. 5. Click on "Troubleshooting", then click OK. 6. Click on "Stop services", then click OK. 7. Enter the IP address of the Ark Tape server. 8. Select the Ark Tape service, then click OK to stop the Ark Tape service. 9. Follow the steps in the "Updating the BlueScale Software" section of the SpectraLogic T50e User's Guide, p Update drive firmware using either ITDT or a drive firmware tape (also known as a code load tape). Code load tapes must be acquired from SpectraLogic. See Update Using a Code Load Tape on p of the SpectraLogic T50e User's Guide. To install firmware downloaded from SpectraLogic, you need a SpectraLogic support portal account and the IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool (ITDT). 11. Download and install ITDT and its related documentation directly from IBM's website. 12. Go to Create or login to your IBM ID account. 14. Click the "Find product" tab. 15. Enter ITDT into the Product selector. 16. Select the platform that matches a computer on the same network as the tape drives you need to update. 17. Launch ITDT to create the necessary Input and Output folders. 18. Read the ITDT documentation for assistance in using and setting up the program.
