1 ATTACHMENT A VITA SUMMARY TIMOTHY E. JARES University of Northern Colorado (970) (office) Monfort College of Business (MCB) (970) (cell) th Street - CB #128 tim.jares@unco.edu Greeley, CO OBJECTIVE To serve as dean of a business school committed to excellence and continuous improvement in service of its students, university, community, alumni, and myriad other stakeholders. ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE Assistant/Associate/Professor of Finance (2001-present). Progressed through the ranks at the Monfort College (MCB) as a finance professor, balancing the traditional faculty load of instruction, scholarship and service, as well as an administrative role for much of the time. Courses taught include Business Finance, Financial Management, Case Problems in Financial Management, International Financial Statement Analysis, and Investments. Earned a CFA charter (2012). CFA charter enhances my credibility with the students and business community, and offers real-world examples from my consulting for my classes. Have earned teaching recognition awards from my colleagues at UNF and UNC as well as from the students at the program and college level at MCB. Have consistently received superior evaluations in service, including recognition as the top service contributor in the college this past year. Continued to help the college, university, and community groups friend and fund raise, including helping secure a recent $700K+ gift for a student-managed scholarship fund. Have a solid scholarship record (29 juried articles, presentations, and proceedings), including articles in the Journal of Financial Research, Journal of Real Estate Research, and Journal of Teaching in International Business. Interim Dean (5/07-8/08). Appointed interim dean upon the departure of Dean Joe Alexander. Continued to maintain my role of managing the state and foundation budgets for the college. Led the process of developing a facilities master plan reflecting input from faculty and students on areas of need and opportunities for improvement. Following the plan helped raise naming funds to completely renovate about one third of them. Renovated the student lounge, cyber café, and coffee corner - complete with group collaboration stations and digital signage. Helped MCB achieve highest fulltime faculty participation rate (82%) on campus (compared to 15% for rest of campus and 17% of national average); pledges and gifts during this year more than doubled best year under prior permanent dean; and helped lay significant group work that led to more than $2 million in gifts in subsequent two years. Helped plan, fund, and execute a highly successful event featuring noted management

Led MCB s successful maintenance of accreditation effort in business and accounting. Represented MCB/UNC at myriad events helping to friend raise and continue to build MCB s reputation and profile. Continued Joe Alexander s practice of consistent communication with the faculty and staff through Monfort Mondays. Some of these efforts are further detailed in additional attachments. Assistant/Associate Dean (5/02-5/07). Primary responsibility was to manage the state and foundation budgets for the college. Developed a unified budget, one that also respected donor restrictions, but was aligned with the college s strategic objectives. Worked with chairs to develop an enrollment planning tool which helped us better manage the number of course offerings throughout the year, reduce course preparations and unnecessary offerings during traditional academic year, and led to a significant increase in summer enrollments and a better breadth of offerings. Tool was also useful in understanding and illustrating college capacity, helping build a case for new faculty lines for MCB. Worked with colleagues across the campus to first develop learning communities, then to develop living and learning communities helping enhance our already high retention rates. Helped the college earn national and international recognition through the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality award. Represented the college through dozens of presentations throughout the U.S. and the world. Some of these efforts are further detailed in additional attachments. Assistant Professor of Finance ( ). First full-time faculty position teaching the University of North Florida (UNF) courses in Financial Management I and II, Investments, Security and Portfolio Analysis, Financial Statement Analysis, and Managerial Finance (MBA). Recognized as an outstanding teacher at the college level and nominated for the university undergraduate teaching award. Primary service accomplishments were in helping the college build its international business program. Led two study abroad trips to central/eastern Europe recruiting the largest UNF group to travel abroad at the time. Instructor of Finance, Graduate Research Assistant ( ). As a doctoral student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, served as recitation instructor for principles of finance, taught courses in principles of finance, principles of real estate, and personal finance. Also served as a research assistant for Bobbi Schini and Thomas Zorn and teaching assistant for Thomas Zorn and John Geppert. INDUSTRY AND CONSULTING EXPERIENCE Portfolio Consultant (2013-present). Initially engaged by NCMC, Inc. to analyze portfolio construction and fee structure of a $250 million portfolio, provide advice regarding the Investment Policy Statement (IPS), portfolio management processes, and financial analysis as the portfolio relates to debt covenants. Subsequently engaged to revise the IPS in collaboration with portfolio advisors and the Finance Committee. More recently tasked to monitor advisor portfolios on an ongoing basis for IPS compliance and performance, as well as to provide guidance to current/future Finance Committees.

Campus visit included meetings with leadership from other campus partners as well. Faculty Internship (2011). As part of sabbatical leave developed a model to illustrate the multi-year impact of the value Castle Pines Capital, Inc. adds to its reseller customers. Business Valuation Consultant ( ). Consultation with Business Valuation, Inc. for valuation of small businesses, warrants on restricted (Rule 144A) securities, and various complex, privately-held securities. Technical Consultant ( ). After resigning my full-time position, but as graduate student, continued to work with Hughes on expert system development and later on new business acquisition. Developed, designed, and estimated cost on new project proposals. Performed feasibility/trade studies for potential new projects. Performed rough-order-of-magnitude studies to assist government in procurement decisions. Software/Systems Engineer ( ). Prior to graduate school, worked as a software engineer, initially in the financial services industry (Land Bank National Data Processing Center), then in the defense industry (Harris Corporation, Sterling Software, Hughes Aircraft Company). As a new graduate was responsible for maintenance and enhancements of systems software that managed the activities of the underlying application software at the Land Bank. At Harris Corporation was responsible for maintenance and enhancement of the communications and support software for the U.S. Air Force s world-wide weather forecasting system. Initially maintained and enhanced DoD secure communications network at Sterling Software, then promoted to lead the development of a commercial wide-area telecommunications product. Hughes Aircraft recruited me to lead the research and development of a signal processing/management expert system. At Hughes I was responsible for everything from project planning and systems development to the development of new project proposals. EDUCATION CFA Charterholder (2012). Continuing education to maintain skills, active in consulting, actively encourage students to purse CFA charter. Pursued MCB s inclusion as a recognized university and manage our student scholarship process. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1998) with a primary field of study in finance. In addition to serving as a teaching and research assistant, actively consulted throughout most of my graduate studies, primarily during the summer months.

One chapter, which described our approach to business school management, was published by the Association for Institutional Research. This publication was widely distributed among AACSB-accredited business schools, in part leading to presentations at AACSB events. The second described the simulated stock market created as part of my dissertation. The Kluwer text featured myriad economic simulations from an international author base. 8 Keynote Addresses and 20+ Presentations on performance excellence. As Associate and Interim Dean, and also more recently as a performance excellence consultant, have delivered presentations on performance excellence in a business school to regional, national, and international audiences ranging in size from a few dozen to around 1,000. SERVICE SUMMARY Whether it has been service to my university or service to some other entity, I have always believed I could make a difference. In some cases I sought the opportunity and in other cases I was recruited. In every case that I served I committed myself to accomplishing the goals of the group and delivering an outcome above and beyond expectations. University. SELECTED AWARDS AND HONORS The awards and honors selected below were chosen because they are particularly memorable to me. In each case I was either in a leadership position or was selected individually. Nonetheless, most of these recognitions required contributions from many others, including my students. MCB Outstanding Service Award. Honor is awarded by peers for outstanding service to the college and the university. Having served in many roles during my tenure at UNC, this most recent award was, in part, as chair of our faculty affairs committee as we worked on re-aligning our faculty systems with the new AACSB accreditation guidelines. MCB Professor of the Year. This is, perhaps, my favorite honor as it is voted on by the students of the college. Colorado Performance Excellence Timberline Award. Served as Assistant Dean when MCB earned this award for a superior approach and deployment of a system to achieve performance excellence (2004). Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Served as Associate Dean when MCB became the first business school, and only 2 nd educational recipient, in history to earn this prestigious Presidential award. 50 for Colorado Program.
