3 OUR VISION: A project founded on the Knowledge Economy and Sustainable Performance The knowledge economy represents a major transformation of the global business. The term was coined in the 1990s to describe a new phase of economic history. In the knowledge economy the creation and use of knowledge of all forms lies at the heart of value creation. The change is so significant that in 2000 the EU pledged to make Europe the most competitive and dynamic knowledge economy, capable of sustainable economic growth with better jobs and greater social cohesion". All companies are now stakeholders in the knowledge economy. The knowledge economy extends beyond the IT and high-tech sectors. Today almost every company in every sector operates in globalized markets that feature new forms of competition. They must continuously innovate and convert their knowledge into competitive advantage by building services around their products. They must also focus on and develop their human capital which is their greatest asset. The characteristics of the knowledge economy. Information technologies are used in almost every type of business operation. As well as improving productivity, these technologies have provided platforms for global dissemination of knowledge. Other features of the modern business environment that have resulted from the interaction between the knowledge economy and information technologies are: > increased globalization > a need to continuously innovate > the need to manage intangible, knowledge-based assets > a need for responsible managers who are able to deliver sustainable performance An innovative educational model with strong values SKEMA focuses its educational programme on the knowledge economy Europe s Skills Pyramid: Definitions Global Knowledge Economy Talents Capacity to generate innovation, ability to lead in cross-cultural environments, ability to manage teams, collective and individual capacity to address new issues (e.g. climate change) Occupational Skills Skills related to specific needs from the job market, including sector specific skills (e.g. software architects, chemical engineers) and horizontal/cross-sectoral skills (e.g. accountants, legal/hr) Literacy and Basic Skills Basic skills required for social integration, including literacy (writing/reading, basic scientific and mathematical knowledge, IT literacy) and minimal knowledge in cross discipline domains such as communications (languages). 4 Governance: Drawing on the business community, our home regions and our international outlook. SKEMA Business School is a private establishment of graduate-level business education. It is run according to the 1901 French law governing non-profit-making associations. The association was founded by Lille School of Management and CERAM Business School, which was part of the French Riviera Chamber of Commerce. The French Riviera Chamber of Commerce and its representatives for the Provence Alpes Côte d Azur participate in the governance of the school on equal terms with the representatives from the Lille region the Nord-Pas de Calais. The 40 members of the General Assembly are drawn half from the Nord-Pas de Calais, and half from the Provence Alpes Côte d Azur. SKEMA s statutory obligations centre on students, and concern teaching and research in management as well as international development. These statutory obligations also comprise the economic, social, scientific, and cultural development of the regions where SKEMA has its roots. SKEMA puts particular emphasis on its core values, namely: social responsibility and sustainable development. The SKEMA Board of Directors The Board of Directors is the executive arm of the school. Three consultative committees contribute to decision making in SKEMA. These are the Strategic Advisory Board (COS), the International Advisory Board (IAB) and the Research Advisory Committee (RAC). The Board of Directors is made up equally by the regions of Nord-Pas de Calais and Provence Alpes Côte d Azur; it also comprises the president of the COS. The chairman is Bernard Lecomte, regional director of Veolia and deputy general manager of Dalkia, (SKEMA alumnus 1964). The vice-chairman is Dominique Estève, president of the Provence Alpes Côte d Azur CCIR (Regional Chamber of Commerce). The Strategic Advisory Board (Conseil d Orientation Stratégique - COS) The COS provides SKEMA s Board of Directors with analyses and recommendations concerning the school s strategy. It is mostly comprised of company directors several of whom are graduates of SKEMA s founder schools. 5 PhD in Corporate Finance Programme taught in English at the Lille campus. The PhD in Corporate Finance is a four-year programme as part of the activities of the Lille 2 SKEMA Management Research Center. PROGRAMME Methodology Quantitative techniques Theories of corporate finance All courses are in English Research seminars and workshops ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Admission to the PhD programme is based on a previously completed Master s degree course (or equivalent). Students accepted into the PhD programme must take a registration into the Lille 2 University PhD programme. Applicants should have the ability to understand and write in English. ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE The applicants are assessed by a selection committee. On the basis of the committee s assessment, the PhD programme director decides > who should be accepted in the PhD programme > who should be offered vacant PhD scholarship(s)/assistantship(s) ASSESSMENT CRITERIA The assessment committee will assess whether the applicant seems capable of carrying out a research project. In connection with this, the CV and diploma/transcripts will be examined, and applicants with outstanding academic background and high potential research projects on the basis of their Master thesis for instance will be given preference. (see the application procedure document) Doctoral study is a full-time project. Accordingly, we only admit students who expect to devote all their efforts to the programme. FEES The fee is payable for the first three years. Thereafter, a reduced rate is charged. For the 2012/2013 academic year, the annual fee is 5,000 Euros for EU students, 10,000 Euros for students funded by companies and for non-eu students supportedby a national grant. A number of post graduate studentship awards are made to the most qualified candidates. 7 Detailed Programme FIRST YEAR In their first year (two semesters) students will attend 5 lectures (150 hours) > Econometric Programming and access to financial and accounting databases > Advanced methods in econometric analysis > Auction Theory > Theoretical Modeling in Corporate Finance > Research Seminar + Students will also be required to write a research proposal, which will be the starting point of their PhD thesis. Admission to the second year To enter the second year, students must have obtained: 1. At least a B in each course 2. A successful defense of the research proposal before the scientific committee. In case the requirements for the admission to the PhD are not satisfied, an MSc in Research is awarded if at least a C has been obtained in all courses. SECOND YEAR In the second year students must: > Attend the Finance Lecture Seminars and Finance Research Seminars > Attend PhD workshops > Follow a reading programme THIRD YEAR The third and fourth year are dedicated to the writing of the dissertation and of at least one paper. Students may be offered the opportunity to spend several months in a partner university. They are expected to present a paper in at least one (peer-reviewed) academic conference.
