The main topic of her internship was the optimization of BCI systems accuracy, speed and usability for communication and environmental control. Bachelor degree in Clinical Engineering, at the University of Rome Sapienza, with a thesis entitled "On the use of EEG P300 evoked potentials in the Brain Computer Interface context. Final degree mark: 101/110. The thesis was developed at the Neuroelectrical Imaging and BCI Laboratory of the Santa Lucia Foundation IRCCS, Rome, Italy, where she did her internship from June 2006 to December She was involved in research activity about P300-based Page 1 of 6

2 brain computer interfaces (BCI). The main topic of her internship was the introduction and validation of an experimental setup about P300-based BCIs. RESEARCH ACTIVITY The research activity conducted by Francesca Schettini fosters the translation of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) from laboratory demonstration to usable devices. In this context, improvements in the functional characteristics of the BCI (e.g. accuracy, efficiency) are still in the focus, while specific research efforts are carried out to make the interface more usable in the context of assistive technologies. During the internship and professional collaboration with the Neuroelectrical Imaging and BCI Laboratory of the Santa Lucia Foundation IRCCS, Rome, Italy, she developed and validated a new classification algorithm which improves usability and reliability of P300-based BCI in real life situations. Then she tested the proposed classification algorithm as a part of a BCI system for environmental control within the SM4All project. During the PhD she demonstrated that the use of BCIs does not necessarily imply having the user constantly involved in the cognitive task which modulates brain responses. Rather, she proposed an original approach to distinguish between periods of intentional use of the BCI and periods in which the interface should ignore the user input. Additionally she proposed and validated an original approach to avoid the need for explicit calibration of the system, relying on the unsupervised updating of the control parameters. She participated in the design and the validation of a BCI-based assistive device for persons with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis; these activities were framed in the Brindisys project (Brindisys Supporting Autonomy through Brain-Computer-Interface Devices: A research project), funded by the Agency for Research on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (AriSLA) PARTICIPATION IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROJECTS Francesca Schettini was/is involved in the following national and European research projects: FP7-ICT , BNCI Horizon 2020: The Future of Brain/Neural Computer Interaction.
