2 ENGL 202 Syllabus COURSE SYLLABUS ENGL 202 AMERICAN LITERATURE II COURSE DESCRIPTION A survey of American literature following the American Renaissance. Two critical papers are required. RATIONALE English 202, American Literature II, will support the existing Liberty University Online curriculum by providing an additional elective for those programs and by providing another writing intensive class. Additionally, this course will lay the groundwork for future Bachelor of Arts degrees in Liberty University Online. I. MEASURABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: A. Analyze the major characteristics of applicable historical/literary periods, genres, and traditions and locate specific texts within those periods, genres, and traditions. B. Identify key authors within a period and apply appropriate literary terms to relate characteristic literary features and devices to their works. C. Demonstrate skills in close reading and analysis of literary texts in a variety of periods, genres, and traditions. D. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (3) Throughout the course, the student will participate in 3 Discussion Board Forums requiring a thread of 250 words in length and a response to another student of 125 words in length. D. Thesis Statements and Outlines (2) In preparation for each paper, the student will submit a thesis statement and an outline based on the provided guidelines and checklist. The thesis statements and outlines will be due the module/week before the final papers are due. E. Analytical Papers (2) The first paper must be a minimum of 750 words in length and does not require outside research beyond the course readings. The second paper must be a minimum of 1250 words in length and does require the use of 3 outside sources. Both papers will follow the guidelines posted on Blackboard and must be submitted in proper, current format (MLA, APA, or Turabian depending on the student s program of study). F. Tests (4) The student will take 4 open-book/open-notes tests on the assigned Reading & Study materials. Each test consists of 40 multiple-choice and/or matching questions. The student will have 1 hour to complete each of these tests. The student may only take these tests once. VI. COURSE GRADING AND POLICIES A. 4 ENGL 202 Syllabus If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by . Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the class will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis. D. Writing Policy The student will be permitted to use the writing style that corresponds with his/her degree program (APA, MLA, or Turabian) for all of his/her written work. All written assignments should be formatted correctly and consistently according to the style being used. Assignments not submitted in proper formatting may be docked points. E. Plagiarism Policy Any form of plagiarism will be dealt with according to the guidelines outlined in the Liberty University Academic Dishonesty policy. F.
