2 COURSE SYLLABUS GLST 220 INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION AND ENGAGEMENT COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will take a close look at behaviors and core values of the North American culture, identify areas where these values are barriers to effective intercultural communication and explore principles for effective engagement in another culture. RATIONALE As followers of Jesus take the command to make disciples of all nations seriously, it is essential that they have a strong grasp of the gospel message that they intend to communicate, know how to engage diverse populations who are in need of the message, and know how to effectively communicate the message, in context, across a variety of cultural backgrounds. 3 D. Explain how cultural value orientations impact effective intercultural communication. V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings and lecture presentations B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (2) Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. D. Seven Signs of John Project The student will write a paper in current Turabian format that focuses on each of the seven signs of John. The student must thoroughly answer 4 corresponding questions for each of the 3 signs chosen as if he/she were preparing to lead and share in a weekly study. E. Book Review The student will write a 1,000-word Book Review in current Turabian format that covers The King Jesus Gospel. This review will contain a short summary of the book, a personal response, a discussion of the book s strengths and weaknesses, and an application of the book in the student s life. F. CQ Assessment and Feedback Report The student will begin this assignment by completing the Cultural Intelligence Self-Assessment. Upon completion of the assessment, the student will receive a customized feedback report. The student will use this feedback report to answer questions about his/her own cultural intelligence and cultural value orientation. The student will submit the feedback report as well as the answers to the questions. G. Gospel Presentation The student will write a paper in current Turabian format that focuses on effectively communicating the gospel to an individual from another culture. The student must demonstrate that he/she has a clear understand of the gospel. H. CQ Action Plan Using the Cultural Intelligence Feedback Report and the CQ Action Plan Grading Rubric, the student will create an action plan for developing his/her personal Cultural Intelligence. I. Late Assignment Policy If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by . Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted.
