2 COURSE SYLLABUS GLST 290 CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will study systems of human behavior and thought for the purpose of improving understanding of, and relations between, people. Several case studies will be used to illustrate these systems. RATIONALE Since Christians are obliged to confront every ethnic community with the claims of Jesus Christ intending to make disciples, it is necessary for them to make the Gospel relevant and meaningful. This course is designed to enable the student to recognize and minimize any misunderstandings in the mission process, to more readily adapt to other cultures, to understand social structures within those cultures, and to know how to properly contextualize the work they will eventually leave behind. 3 D. Articulate the biblical principles applicable to the engagement of people groups today. V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings and presentations B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (4) The student will complete 4 Discussion Board Forums in this course. Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, in each forum, the student will post a thread answering various questions in at least 2 words. Then, the student will reply to at least 2 classmates threads in at least 100 words each. D. Research Paper Bibliography The student will submit a bibliography containing at least 5 sources that he/she plans to use in the Research Paper. This must be in current Turabian format. E. Muller Book Report The student will write a 6-page report of the following 2 sections of Muller s book: The Messenger and The Message. A title page and bibliography will also be required in addition to the 6 pages of content. Current Turabian format must be used, and citations from both the text and the Bible are required. F. Interview Paper The student will interview a person of a different nationality and cultural orientation (e.g. foreign exchange students, foreign professionals, etc.) and write an 8 10-page paper. A list of interview questions used must be included in the appendix. G. Research Paper The student will write an 8 10-page research with at least 5 resources on 1 of the provided topics and discuss implications the chosen topic has for the Christian. H. Livermore Book Review The student will write a 6-page review of Livermore s book including an abstract, concrete response, personal reflection, and action plan. A title page and bibliography will also be required in addition to the 6 pages of content. Current Turabian format must be used, and citations from both the text and the Bible are required. I. Quizzes (8) Each quiz covers the chapters from the Grunlan and Mayers text assigned in that module/week. All quizzes are open-book/open-notes and contain 10, 20, or 25 Page 2 of 3

4 multiple-choice and true/false questions. The student will have a time limit of approximately 1.5 minutes per question. VI. COURSE GRADING AND POLICIES A. Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis. D.
