2 COURSE SYLLABUS HIUS 221 SURVEY OF AMERICAN HISTORY I COURSE DESCRIPTION A survey of the political, social and economic developments of America from the colonizing experience through the Civil War with emphasis on the development of the American democratic tradition. RATIONALE Survey of American History I offers a bird s eye view of sweeping events and movements from colonial settlement through the Civil War. A general knowledge of this period gives the student the necessary historical content and context for an ongoing and deeper investigation into the details of American history and life. I. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (2) Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, for each forum, the student will select a topic of interest from a provided list. The student will then respond to a prompt based on his or her reading for the forum, as well as relevant biblical principles. The response must be words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the response, the student will reply to the responses of at least 2 classmates. Each reply must be words. D. Personal Reflections Journals (8) The student will submit a journal entry pertaining to the Reading & Study material covered in each module/week. Some guidelines for reflection will be provided in each module/week. Each journal entry must be words, and if sources are cited, they must be in current Turabian format. E. American History in Video Pre-Assignment The student must locate and select 1 video from a preselected playlist, American History in Video, located on the Jerry Falwell Library database. The videos in this playlist address several aspects of U.S. history, from first settlements to the Civil War, and will be provided by accessing a link supplied in Blackboard. The title of video the student selects from the playlist will be submitted for instructor approval via Blackboard. F. American History in Video Assignment Using the video selected in the Pre-Assignment, the student will utilize the supplied template to write a 1 2-page summary of the video s contents, properly cite the video, and identify 5 scholarly books and 5 peer-reviewed, scholarly articles that directly relate to the video to create a bibliography in current Turabian format. 4 G. American Art Project Pre-Assignment In preparation for the American Art Project, the student will write a paragraph of words responding to a supplied prompt. H. American Art Project Assignment For this critical thinking assignment, the student will examine a variety of images found on an assigned website and will create a PowerPoint presentation or Microsoft Word document that responds to a series of prompts provided in the assignment instructions. The project will be assessed on how well the student synthesizes the information from the website with the content presented in the course materials and on the student s effectiveness at communication. I. Slave Trade Database Quiz The student will be directed to a website containing a database of slave trade voyages. After reviewing instructions and a video tutorial on how to navigate the database, the student will answer a series of objective questions on a worksheet. Next, the student will complete a quiz that will be open-book/open-notes, contain multiple-choice questions, and have a time limit of minutes. J. Course Materials Quizzes (8) Each module/week, the student will complete a quiz that covers all the Reading & Study material assigned for that module/week, including any textbook readings, presentations, articles, or websites. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 30 multiple-choice and/or true/false questions, and have a time limit of 1 hour. K. Reading Comprehension Assessments (3) The student will complete 3 assessments throughout the course. Each assessment will have a short passage embedded in it. The student will read it and answer 5 multiple-choice questions within a time limit of minutes. Each assessment will be open-book/open-notes. VII. COURSE GRADING AND POLICIES A. Late Assignment Policy If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by . Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a % deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a % deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis. D.
