Introduction Functions 2 Introduction This chapter contains information on the function of the archive, backup, and restore.»ipc Backup & Restore«requires the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. 2.1 Functions The»IPC Backup & Restore«software provides the following basic functions: 1. Creation and management of archives Archive ( 25), 2. Creation of backups Backup with USB stick ( 27), 3. Update of the runtime software Update ( 31). For archives and backups, different storage media are used. Information on the differences between archives and backups and the storage media to be selected can be found in the following chapters: What is an archive? ( 12) What is a backup? ( 12) What is a restore? ( 12) Using Compact Flash cards For an error-free backup and restore of data in the»ipc Backup & Restore«only Compact Flash cards of the company swissbit, variant "Fixed Disk(non removable) with ultra direct memory access (UDMA)" are approved! Compact Flash cards of swissbit are available in different versions.»ipc Backup & Restore«only supports the "Fixed Disk (non removable)" version with ultra direct memory access (UDMA) which is used in the industrial PC as bootable memory medium, can be partitioned and formatted like a hard disk. 10 L 1.6 EN - 01/2011
Introduction Functions Information on different Compact Flash(CF) versions Version Function Fixed Disk(non removable) The CF card can be used like a hard disk. Partitioning and formatting is possible. Removable Disk The CF card can be formatted, but partitioning is not possible. Ultra direct memory access (UDMA) Ultra direct memory access provides direct and quicker data access to the contents of the CF card. can only be used if the hardware supports ultra direct memory access Structure of the»ipc Backup & RestoreIPC Backup & Restore«is composed of two components:»ipc Backup & Restore«on the engineering PC under Windows XP,»IPC Backup & Restore«on the IPC under Windows CE. The contents of this documentation refer to the use of the»ipc Backup & Restore«on the engineering PC. Further information on the use of the»ipc Backup & Restore«under Windows CE can be found in the documentation for the industrial PC in the section»ipc Backup & Restore«. 1.6 EN - 01/2011 L 11
Introduction Differences between archive, backup, and restore 2.2 Differences between archive, backup, and restore The archive of a CF card is basically different from a backup of an industrial PC. The contents and the structure of archive and backup are different. This is why an archive can, for instance, not be replaced by a backup What is an archive? The term Archive describes the contents of a CF card. The archive is created under Windows XP by the CF card. The CF card contains the complete "memory" of the industrial PC, contains all permanently saved pieces of information of the IPC components such as the operating system, software, data. For the industrial PC, the CF card is what the hard disk is for the engineering PC. There, all data required for operation are stored. Using an archive What is a backup? A backup is created under Windows CE. With a backup, individual IPC components are copied from the CF card to a USB stick. Using a backup ( 14) What is a restore? Restore describes the process of restoring backup data from a USB stick on the CF card. "Restore" is for instance used to transfer individual components from one industrial PC to another IPC, restore data in the event of a defect. Backups are restored under Windows CE. Using a restore ( 16) 12 L 1.6 EN - 01/2011
Introduction Using an archive 2.3 Using an archive You can restore the archive of a CF card on your engineering PC on a new Compact Flash card. Observe the differences between the storage media when restoring archives! A restore only restores configuration-dependent software components. During the restore, the whole contents of the Compact Flash card are restored. Tip! How to carry out a backup or restore under Windows CE on the industrial PC is described in the chapter "Backup and Restore" of the software manual for the industrial PC. Archiving requires that the engineering PC is equipped with a card reader. When archiving a CF card, the whole CF card contents will be backed up on your hard disk. The backed up archive can be restored on another CF card later. An industrial PC can be booted with a restored CF card. After inserting the CF card, the IPC can be started directly. Using a backup ( 14) Archiving a CF card If all data bases of the CF card of an industrial PC are to be backed up on the engineering PC, a card reader must be connected to the engineering PC. For completely restoring a software version, the CF card must be archived. When the CF card is archived, all CF card data are backed up. Archiving therefore requires enough memory space on the CF card. For more information on archiving a CF card, please see: Backup with USB stick ( 27) 1.6 EN - 01/2011 L 13
Introduction Using a backup 2.4 Using a backup Whereas CF card archives represent a complete data base, USB sticks are designed for the backup of individual IPC components. An advantage of the use of backups is the automatic backup functionality when booting up the industrial PC. Unlike CF card archiving, the USB stick is not to be removed from the industrial PC. Risk of data loss! When duplicating or restoring a CF card, the data carrier is formatted and made bootable. When a USB stick is selected, the USB stick is afterwards no longer suitable for being used on an industrial PC! The storage medium selected in Backup & Restore must correspond to the storage medium physically available! The term "Backup" describes the following process: When creating a backup using a USB stick as storage medium on your industrial PC, components are copied from your CF card to the USB stick. The restore of a backup on your industrial PC is called "Restore". Backups stored on a USB stick can additionally be transferred from the USB stick to an engineering PC. IPC CF card Restore Backup Update USB stick The contents of a backup can be configured: Backup with USB stick ( 27) A backup may contain maximally four IPC components: Operating system; boot loader Lenze software System configuration Data 14 L 1.6 EN - 01/2011
Introduction Using a backup The more IPC components you select, the more memory space is required on your USB stick. When creating the first backup, all components should be selected. Data ( 29) As soon as backups are created at regular intervals, we recommend only to backup the IPC components that change. These are mainly data. Please read the section Backup with USB stick ( 27) to see which data are backed up. A defect on a CF card can only be removed by restoring the archive on another CF card! When a USB stick is used, the system is always expected to be executable. As a precaution, always create an archive from a CF card! Backup with USB stick If data of an industrial PC are to be backed up on a USB stick, the USB stick must be prepared using this software. When the USB stick is prepared, the»ipc Backup & Restore«on the industrial PC can automatically generate the required backup (depending on the configuration). Backups are provided with special names which contain information on the industrial PC. The data which are considered by a backup is described under: Data ( 29) USB stick Configure Add backup USB stick Configured Save backup USB stick Create backup Engineering PC Industrial PC Archive CF card [2-1] Backup - overview 1.6 EN - 01/2011 L 15
Introduction Using a restore 2.5 Using a restore Restoring an archive located on the engineering PC on a Compact Flash card (CF card). To restore data, the USB stick must be switched from the engineering PC to the industrial PC. Restore with a USB stick only restores the IPC components previously selected, Restore the CF card restores all data bases of the CF card. Please observe the increased memory requirements! USB stick Add backup Engineering PC Industrial PC CF card Restore [2-2] Restore - overview How to restore data contents on your industrial PC is described under: Restore with USB stick ( 16) 2.6 Summary of the functions There is a basic difference between archiving a CF card and carrying out a backup with a USB stick: Archiving a CF card backs up all data sets of the CF card, A Backup with a USB stick only backs up user data and the IPC components selected. Backups created with a USB stick are designed for the regular backup of user data!
