NE Module I ( ) Core (x) Concentration ( ) Elective ( ) Pre-requisite(s) ( ) (s) recommended before taking this course: Phan Giang, Ph.D. Associate Prof. Dept. of Health Administration and Policy Phone: pgiang@gmu.edu Instant Messenger: GoogleTalk phan.h.giang@gmail.com Office: 127, North East Module I Office Hours: Tue, 10:00 am 12:00pm and by appointment Students learn to manipulate large databases, create link table queries, write SQL application programs, understand sources of data conflicts, and identify methods of integrating ODBC databases with legacy data. Covers data warehousing, methods of analyzing large databases, including Bayesian belief networks and machine learning in health care context. Features semester long data integration group project. Students learn to: Understand and use XML technology for data integration Store health data in XML format Understand sources of data conflicts Write XSD schema to verify the data Identify methods of integrating ODBC databases with legacy data. Write XSL transformations to transform data from a structure to another structure Learn methods of analysis of large databases, including Bayesian belief networks and machine learning in the health care context. Understand future trends in health data in particular HL7 CDA clinical Spring HAP720 Phan Giang

XML in a Nutshell, 2nd or later editions O'Reilly Media (ebook offer at EditpadPro o You need the features of a licensed version NOT EditPad Lite o You need a Windows based PC to run Editpad Pro to process XML o If you use Mac you need to run your PC in Windows mode Other reading materials will be distributed as the course progresses. Expectations Students are responsible for assigned readings, class content and material. You are expected to arrive to class on time, stay for the duration of the class, and contribute actively.
