OS6 Step-by-Step Configuration I. OS6 Initialization 1. Network By default, OS6 models will obtain their own IP addresses using DHCP. Hence, you will need a DHCP server in your network environment. Nowadays, most local network environments (such as schools, offices, and homes) have a router which also acts as a DHCP server. Therefore, in most instances, you need not worry about additional network configuration. All you need to do is to connect your OS6 model to your network environment. If there is no DHCP server on your chosen network, the OS6 NAS will have a default IP of after booting completely. 2. Disks Please choose drives from the compatibility lists available on the Thecus website to avoid unexpected failures. 3. Power Please connect OS6 Model with the supplied AC adapter. 4. Initializing OS6 NAS a. Please check the MAC address on the bottom of the OS6 model. Next, power on the device by pressing the power button. V1.0 3/48 16 Sep 2014
b. Please wait for between 90 and 100 seconds after powering on the unit. Following this, run IntelligentNAS. You will find your OS6 model listed according to its MAC address (Step 4a). After a further 10 seconds, the unit s status will become Create RAID. Please select the OS6 model and click Next. c. This step will create a RAID volume on your OS6 model. Self-RAID creation: The system will decide which RAID level is optimal based on the numbers of installed drives. Manual RAID Creation: Only OS6 will be installed. No RAID will be created. d. The initialization process will take between 16 and 18 minutes to finish V1.0 4/48 16 Sep 2014
e. Next, you can create a new Thecus ID or log in with an existing Thecus ID Create a Thecus ID: Thecus ID: Please fill in any valid address Password: Please fill in a preferred password First Name: Please fill in your first name (optional) Middle Name: Please fill in your middle name (optional) Last Name: Please fill in your last name (optional) V1.0 5/48 16 Sep 2014
Thecus ID Login: Thecus ID: Please fill in your Thecus ID Password: Please fill in your password DDNS: Please fill in your preferred DDNS link f. After configuring Thecus ID successfully, you will see the Thecus ID and DDNS link displayed. Following this, you will be able to access the OS6 Model using a web browser. V1.0 6/48 16 Sep 2014
5. DDNS Link After completing all previous steps, your OS6 NAS will be functioning properly. However, you may find that your DDNS link does not work. This is because you still need to configure port-forwarding on the router to make the link available. There are two methods to accomplish this goal: a. If the router supports UPnP and UPnP is enabled: i. Please log in to the OS6 model s UI ii. Browse to [Control Panel] -> [Network services] -> [UPnP Port Management] iii. Based on the services you need, add the new rule below: iv. After this has been added, the DDNS connection will work V1.0 7/48 16 Sep 2014
b. If the router does not support UPnP, you need to add port-forwarding rules on the router ourselves. i. Please log in to the router s UI. Below is an example from the ASUS RTN12. V1.0 8/48 16 Sep 2014
ii. [WAN] -> [Virtual Server/Port Forwarding]: Add a rule for the DDNS link service. For example: Forward port 8888 of router to port 8888 of the OS6 model iii. After setting this successfully, the DDNS link should be able work based on the rules you added above Note: Default ports used by OS6: WEB UI: 80 and 8888 Samba: 139, 445 FTP: 2100 AFP: 548 SSH: Now your OS6 NAS and the DDNS link will work together perfectly. V1.0 9/48 16 Sep 2014
II. OS6 Functions & Configuration 1. Networking By default, OS6 NAS will receive an IP address through DHCP. If the IP configuration need to be modified, please change the settings though WEB UI after OS6 model is successfully initialized. Please follow the steps below: Log into the UI and then browse to [Control Panel] -> [System Management] -> [Networking] Change network settings V1.0 10/48 16 Sep 2014
The Host name, Domain Name, WINS Server1, and WINS Server2 can be modified here. DNS settings can also be changed here, and users can decide whether to have the DNS server set by DHCP or to do it manually. Note: If your IP configuration is set up manually, you can no longer configure DNS settings using DHCP In this section, you can also confirm the system status, speed, link status, jumbo frame, and IP settings. Furthermore, the IP settings can be modified. Note: It is recommend that jumbo frames remain at their default values. If all devices in your local network support jumbo frames, however, users may configure their values to enhance network performance. 2. RAID Management [Control Panel] -> [Storage] -> [RAID Management] By default, IntelligentNAS will create a RAID volume automatically while initializing the OS6 NAS if Self-RAID Creation was selected. The RAID level is based on the number of disks installed. If Manual RAID Creation was selected while initializing the OS6 NAS, the RAID will need to be created first through the UI before the NAS can be used to store data. V1.0 11/48 16 Sep 2014
a. RAID Management : b. Creating a RAID Volume: Click on Create and the RAID Volume Creation Wizard will appear. Please follow the steps displayed in UI to create a RAID volume. c. Editing a RAID Volume: If you already have a RAID volume, you can edit its RAID ID or expand your JBOD volume. How to expand your JBOD volume: Select the available disk -> Apply -> Expand your JBOD volume to use additional data capacity V1.0 12/48 16 Sep 2014
3. Thecus ID If your Thecus ID was not configured during the NAS initialization, you still can set it up in the system UI. [Control Panel] -> [Network servicess] -> [Thecus ID] A. Fill in your Thecus ID, password, and the DDNS link you want to use. B. If you do not have a Thecus ID, you also can register to get one here. C. To access more advanced configuration options for your Thecus ID, please follow the link below. V1.0 13/48 16 Sep 2014
4. UPnP Management If you did not configure UPnP port forwarding during the initialization process and need to map the NAS ports to the router ports, please follow these instructions: Note: The router must support UPnP to make use of this feature. a. [Control Panel] -> [Network services] -> [UPnP Port Management] b. Based on the services and the ports required, add the following new rule: c. The ports will now be forwarded based on the rules above. V1.0 14/48 16 Sep 2014
5. Local Users and Local Groups You can add local users and local groups for to OS6 using the instructions below A. Local User Configuration [Control Panel] -> [File Sharing/Privileges] -> [Local User Configuration] Adding a local user: You can add a local user and assign them to a local group. 19 c. [Shared Folder] -> [ACL] If the folder is not public, you will need to configure ACL settings before using it. There are three possible permissions: 1. Writeable 2. Read Only 3. Deny You can select a user or a group from the left column and then assign a permission by dragging the user or group to the corresponding field. d. Once the folder is added and the ACL setting configured, you can immediately use the folder with related permission. V1.0 19/48 16 Sep 2014
7. WebDAV By default, the WebDAV service is enabled. If you wish to change its settings (such as the ports it uses), please follow the steps below: a. [Control Panel] -> [Network Services] -> [WebDAV] b. You can enable or disable this service. You also can change the ports that it uses. Moreover, you can decide whether to view your data on NAS with web browser using WebDAV or not. Note: If you want to use the mobile app T-OnTheGo, WebDAV will need to be enabled first. V1.0 20/48 16 Sep 2014
8. Windows Network Drives and ACL Settings If you want to map a network drive from an OS6 NAS, please follow the steps below: a. Open [Run] in the [Start] menu b. Access the NAS though Samba by entering //OS6_Model_IP V1.0 21/48 16 Sep 2014

c. Next, you can add a new iscsi target. iqn_year and iqn_month : If there is no special requirement, please keep these at their default value. Authentication : For security reasons, users are recommend to use CHAP. Each iscsi volume will have at least one logical unit number (LUN). As a result, creating a new iscsi target will also create a new LUN. Thin-provision : The real capacity is not allocated to this LUN right away. Its real capacity is based on its actual usage. You can, however, assign a capacity which is larger than the RAID volume s capacity. For example, if the data capacity of your RAID is only 500GB in size, you can create a 2TB thin-provision type iscsi LUN. When the capacity of the iscsi LUN has nearly exceeded the total data capacity of the RAID volume, you will need to expand the RAID volume. Instant Allocation : The capacity of the RAID will be allocated to this LUN immediately. Hence its capacity cannot exceed the total capacity of the RAID. iscsi Block Size : By default the value will be 512 Bytes. If you need an iscsi LUN with a capacity over 2TB that will be used by a Windows XP system, please change this value to 4K Bytes. V1.0 28/48 16 Sep 2014
The below screen indicates that an iscsi target has been added successfully V1.0 29/48 16 Sep 2014
