PSYCHOLOGY, AT ITS CORE, IS ALL ABOUT UNDERSTANDING HOW PEOPLE THINK, BEHAVE AND RELATE. AT ROSEMEAD SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY, WE BELIEVE THAT A CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW IS JOHN TOWNSEND (M.A. '82, Ph.D. '84) Psychologist, author and leadership consultant Rosemead simply has it all: in-depth psychological training, a biblical framework, and an orientation to helping students grow as individuals. It does an excellent job of equipping its students to meet the demands of the profession. AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THIS UNDERSTANDING. That s why Rosemead integrates scientific, research-driven study of human behavior with biblical understanding of human nature. Through this study of truths that God has revealed in both creation and the written Word, we seek to produce balanced psychologists who will make an impact in the areas of research, teaching and counseling. At Rosemead, you ll experience reputable, APA-accredited programs with an established record of preparing graduates for highly competitive positions. You ll also benefit from a supportive Christian environment that nurtures the whole person - spiritually, emotionally, intellectually and professionally. 2

INTEGRATION PSYCHOLOGY WITH THEOLOGY At Rosemead, you re not left on your own to figure out how to integrate your faith with your clinical practice. Our approach is built on: Integration-focused classes. These specialized classes taught by Christian psychologists, philosophers and theologians are designed to enhance your understanding of how your faith and practice work together. Scholarly dialogue. Rosemead faculty members publish broadly, and for more than 40 years Rosemead has published the Journal of Psychology & Theology. This is one of the few scholarly journals dedicated to the integration of psychology and theology. Relevant research. Rosemead operates the Institute for Research on Psychology and Spirituality, which examines integration paradigms and how integration is applied in clinics, churches and graduate programs. Extensive clinical experiences. You will begin seeing clients under supervision during your second semester of study and complete more than 2,000 hours of practicum and internship before you graduate. BRUCE NARRAMORE Founding Dean, Rosemead School of Psychology Isolated intellectual understandings of psychology and theology are highly overrated. Integrative efforts come alive when we recognize their eternal aspect and see our work and study as part of our God-ordained task of reconciling men to God, themselves, and others. 4

TRUSTED CHARLES AN APA*-ACCREDITED EDUCATION At Rosemead, you will be equipped with the solid academic foundation needed to interact intelligently and serve effectively in your future career. Whether you plan to teach, research, practice, minister or counsel, you ll benefit from: CHEGE (M.A. '94, Psy.D. '97) University professor and clinical psychologist I made up my mind to attend Rosemead because of its distinctive as a very solid clinical program with a strong emphasis on integration anchored by full APA accreditation. I am ever so glad I did! A trustworthy name. Rosemead has held accreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA) since And for more than 20 years, U.S. News & World Report has classified Biola University as a National University. A reputable faculty. Rosemead s 25 full-time faculty members have centuries of combined experience in professional clinical work, teaching, counseling and ministry. Its members have authored several seminal books over the past 30 years and are widely published in scholarly and popular journals. The best of both worlds. Rosemead offers both the practitioner-based Psy.D. and the research-based Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Such training provides the best of both models and results in a scholarly synergism that is rare in the university context. *American Psychological Association 750 First Street NE Washington, DC
PREPARED YOUR CLINICAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT Real-world experience is essential to your development as a psychologist. At Rosemead, your hands-on training begins early and builds, step by step, throughout your years of study. This leads to a full-time internship in your fifth year of study and prepares you to interact with and work in the mental health community while maintaining a Christian worldview. You ll be prepared through: Early exposure. Rosemead operates a large counseling center close to campus that serves the needs of Biola and the community at large. Biola Counseling Center provides approximately 14,000 hours of clinical service each year. Your supervised experience at the Center will take you beyond the classroom beginning in your first year of study. Diverse clinical experiences. All students complete practicum training with inpatient and outpatient agencies. These agencies provide you with opportunities to work with diverse populations adults, children, individuals, groups, and families from various cultures and socio-economic backgrounds allowing you to gain a breadth of clinical experiences in professional settings. Psychotherapy lab course. These courses, taken concurrently with theory courses, allow you to practice under supervision in the psychotherapy modalities that you are learning. An invaluable internship. Rosemead s unique clinical program will give you the extensive practical experience you need to qualify for some of the nation s most competitive internship opportunities, including medical centers, university counseling centers, community agencies, forensic, and military settings. SHARON LEWIS- BULTSMA (Psy.D. '01) Clinical psychologist and speaker One of the best and most formative experiences I had at Rosemead was at my first practicum placement. There I received outstanding supervision from a seasoned training analyst that was some of the best supervision I have ever had. As I look back, no other experience, aside from my own therapy, has had more influence on me as a practitioner today. 8

FELLOWSHIP A SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT Connecting your maturing faith with rigorous studies isn t just an academic exercise. Rosemead students join a Christian university community, providing opportunities for fellowship, dialogue and worship vital parts of the total developmental process. You ll experience: A Christ-centered learning environment. Rosemead offers a distinct setting where all faculty, staff and students are professing Christians. Personal guidance as you acclimate. Incoming students are partnered with current students to address the transitional challenges of joining a new community. Fellowship opportunities. Rosemead offers a weekly chapel for students, staff and faculty, along with other events and informal activities that are designed to enhance your spiritual formation. Focus on personal growth. One of the highest rated aspects of Rosemead s program by alumni is the requirement that students participate in their own didactic therapy experience. Other opportunities for growth are participation in either couples therapy, spiritual direction or group psychotherapy. Diverse communities. Biola University is located in an area of ethnic and socioeconomic diversity. Therefore, our numerous practicums provide opportunities to work with a rich diversity of clients, populations and type of sites (e.g. medical centers and community mental health agencies). CHIYAH LAWRENCE former student My time at Rosemead would not have been what it has if not for the community I have found here. The growth I have seen in myself and my ability to endure the stretching that has occurred along the journey has been tremendously impacted by the students, staff and faculty that I have come to know and lean on. 11

PROGRAMS 14 T he licensure and employment rates of our alumni clearly demonstrate the value our graduates find in their professional training. Among those who received degrees in the past decade, 95 percent of Ph.D. alumni and 93 percent of Psy.D. alumni are currently employed in careers related to psychology. Meanwhile, 80 percent of Ph.D. alumni and 75 percent of Psy.D. alumni maintain current psychology licensure. (Some of our alumni use their training internationally or in the U.S. in careers for which licensure is not necessary.) Rosemead offers both the PhD. and Psy.D. degrees in Clinical Psychology. Both doctoral degree programs are accredited by the APA, and both require 133 semester hours including psychology and theology coursework, psychotherapy labs, integration seminars, research, practicum, internship, and dissertation or doctoral paper requirements. Each program takes five to six years to complete and an M.A. degree is awarded after the first two years when degree requirements are fulfilled. Both degree programs are planned to produce practicing psychologists who possess excellent clinical skills. PH.D. IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY The Ph.D. degree program is designed for those who desire to produce research and teach as well as provide clinical services. This degree program requires more research coursework, a master s level thesis and a dissertation. PSY.D. IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY The Psy.D. degree program is designed for those who seek to conduct and apply research in their clinical practices. This program requires more psychotherapy lab courses and practicum units in order to emphasize enhanced clinical skills.
