The research group has a long tradition in social survey research, GIS data analysis and qualitative research directed on quality of life of different groups (including older people). Frans Thissen is a specialist in quality of life in rural areas in north-western Europe, especially for older people. He has been a researcher in several social surveys directed on older inhabitants of villages in the Netherlands. He participated in the Old People in Europe's Rural Areas (OPERA) project together with gerontologists of the University of Wales, Bangor and the University of Keele UK and was Principal Investigator for the Netherlands in Ageing Well: a European study of Adult Well-being (ESAW), funded by the EC within the Fifth Framework and coordinated by G. Clare Wenger of the University of Wales, Bangor UK. He was responsible for several EU-financed projects directed on quality of life in rural Flanders (Westhoek). He is a consultant to local authorities, provinces and community development organisations in the Netherlands and Flanders regarding rural community development problems related to quality of life. Dr. Hugo Velthuijsen - Learning during the process is also a result Dr. Hugo Velthuijsen, since 2008 lecturer New Business & ICT, at Hanze University Groningen. He focuses in that role on the use of ICT for growth and innovation in companies and organizations and the support of ICT-based ideas into valuable, new businesses. He is also a leading professor of Entrepreneurship at Hanze University. This results in a wider interest and responsibility for continuing innovation and valorization, in line with the WRR report 'Towards a learning economy "and the role of example Colleges. Velthuijsen studied mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. In 1992 he graduated from the University of Maastricht on a topic in Artificial Intelligence. Velthuijsen worked overcoev 23 years at KPN as a research assistant, business consultant and business manager. Since 2014 he is member of the SER Northern Netherlands as an expert in the field of innovation. He serves on the advisory board fixed in this area.
5 Prof. Dirk Strijker Overview of the ITRACTS results & workshop Civic Initiatives and Public Transport Expertise: Agriculture, rural development, agriculture economics and policy Dirk Strijker (1953) is professor by special appointment in Rural Development at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences. He studied Economics in Groningen and was awarded a PhD in 2000 by the University of Amsterdam for a study of regional differences in European agriculture. Strijker is an expert in the field of rural development and European agricultural policy. He has been the Mansholt Professor of Rural Development since This chair was endowed by the Faculty of Spatial Sciences at the request of the Stichting voor Hoger Landbouwonderwijs (Foundation for Higher Agricultural Education). Strijker publishes on the economic aspects of agriculture and agriculture economics and policy, among other things. He writes not only for other scientists, but also for the general public as a columnist for the Dagblad van het Noorden (until 2009) and De Boerderij (since 2010). Koen Salemink Ph.D. Candidate - Overview of the ITRACTS results & workshop Civic Initiatives and Public Transport Since 2012 Koen works as a PHD researcher on ICTs, rural development, marginal groups at the Department of Cultural Geography of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Interreg project 'ITRACT'; Improving Transport and Accessibility through new Communication Technologies Key words: Digital and social inequalities, digital divide, ICTs, marginal groups, broadband internet, rural development, regional disparities, social cohesion, inclusive policy Dr. Frank Willems - Leadership of sustainable communities; what can we learn from Olympic Sailors and self organizing high performance teams? Dr. Frank Willems is connected as Practice Lead and Principal to Quint Wellington Redwood and as a lecturer at Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen. He combines his technical experience in the world of social communications with his skills as a leadership expert. Frank Willems further education studies were done in tandem with his training and career as an organization and informatics expert in the Dutch army. In this capacity Frank Willems developed decision support systems, the basis of his current interest in using technology to support personal training and performance. After his army career, he became a management consultant
6 at Pink Elephant, helping them to establish professionalization of the IT management work area with ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) and to grow from 10 employees to over 2000 by the time he left. He believes that everyone is a self-leader and this comes from knowing your own capabilities and the ability to outsource any further required skills that you need to complete a task, very much like commercial companies. Technology plays a big part in this personal outsourcing process, the technology being the internet; social networking sites and knowledge locations. In his current capacity as Practice Lead and Principal to Quint Wellington Redwood, a Dutch Sourcing and IT management consulting firm, Frank Willems uses his skills in the commercial arena to help individuals and companies to restructure, grow and manage change efficiently. However, he also is a youth sailing coach and supports the Dutch National sailing team where he combines his knowledge of personal development with his understanding of the technical application and experience in leadership development to help sports men and women to maximise their sporting ability. Workshop leaders Andrew Sage MSc. Co-creation on smart mobility After graduating in Computing Science from Aberdeen University in 1994 Andrew joined the North of Scotland s first ISP as an early web developer before moving on to develop web and desktop applications (as we called them back then) in the Health & Safety sector. In 2001 he joined a vehicle tracking startup to work on back and front end development, with GIS being a key factor. The GIS focus continued with involvement in a massive GIS data migration project for a well-known British telecoms company. On being made redundant in 2010, he bought an ipad on his last day of work and became a freelance ios and Android app developer. The claim to fame highlight of his apps creations was development of the global chart-topping, million plus downloads StarComposer music ios app. In addition to the mobile apps he has also developed several Ruby on Rails-based web apps for a wide range of clients. In recent years he has also been involved with a Londonbased charity providing technical advice to disadvantaged young people setting up businesses. This led to demoing some apps at 10 Downing Street possibly the first time a demo put together late the night before actually worked! Having been involved with the internet for 20 years I have a passion for finding new things it can be used for. Being able to connect on the move, mostly at reasonable speeds, still amazes me given the dial up 28.8 kilobits-per-second modem plugged into my Amiga that I started out with. This always on availability mixed with the unimaginable amount and range of data out there still makes me feel we are as much at the new frontier now as I was back in 1994.
7 Dr. Niklas Johansson - Digital service innovation - how do we create a better future? Niklas holds a Ph.D. of Economics in Information Systems and have been a project leader for a number of research and innovation projects mainly in the area of digital service development. The research interest concerns methods and techniques of understanding users and how to develop services following users needs. Healthy Ageing Network Northern Netherlands (HANNN) - Smart Cycling City The role of HANNN is connecting relevant factors and parties in the field of Healthy Ageing. The objective is to develop new products, services and concepts contributing to prevention, recovery process, better health care and self-management. The innovation comes from our partners, but HANNN is facilitating the process of business development, finding relevant funding sources (such as EU funds), and by searching for international partners. HANNN s work is guided by a societal and an international agenda. With these agendas the partner s interest are represented towards the authorities in Europe. This is supporting the strong position of the network. Last but not least HANNN is communicating for the entire network. For example this website, the HANNN magazine, events, and newsletters are used to share the best practices and ongoing initiatives. Visit for more information Chairman Arjen van Leeuwen MSc. I am active for more than 20 years as a governmental organization communication specialist. Communication means to achieve goals within the organization, not the end in itself. I believe that people make the difference and therefore an equivalent position is important. It ensures respect and commitment, even if one disagrees. Good communication takes time and maintenance. Some of my assumptions are: Communicate as you would like to be informed Do not use pressure as a messenger, but as a critical scrutiny of the whole process Be clear about who has what role in what stage of the process Clarity over popularity: say what you do and do what you say Fear to communicate makes sure that that happens where you're afraid of Do not think of what the other is thinking, simply ask Know the people with who you work.
