Non-EU Students Insure yourself against possible illnesses or accidents before your leave for Finland.
Basic Rules When you come for an appointment, please bring along a student card with a valid label or a certificate of attendance from the Student Affairs Office. When you have an appointment please Be on time! Please inform us if you cannot make it to your appointment at the agreed time. The earlier you let us know, the more likely it is that someone else can use the service in your place and our queues are that much shorter. Cancel the appointment by phoning the number for appoinments or cancellations or by the on-line form available at
Health examination process for first year students FSHS invites all new students to take part in a health examination that includes: an electronic health inquiry and when required, a personal appointment. The process starts by us ing you, inviting you to complete a health questionnaire. The responses will be assessed by a nurse and a dental hygienist. If necessary, the student will be asked to make an appointment with the nurse and/or dental hygienist. If you wish, you have the option to come in for a personal health discussion.

Helsinki-Espoo special features in SÄTKY Less exercise Not enough sleep More loneliness Social behaviour More alcohol use among women Helping hand: FHSH, Nyyti, AYY, AY, Unisport
Celebrating together Finish alcohol culture Student culture Alcohol abuse can make more difficult to intergrate According to student health survey 40% of men and 31% of wome don t feel that they belong to any group related to studies
Celebrating together What does drinking mean to people in a positive way: relaxing, beeing together, having fun Wich is better: Beeing drunk with friends or beeing alone sober?
Different alcohol culture No Alcohol Little bit of alcohol Lots of alcohol Culture and sport Events Parties
Social pressure to use alcohol Student Health Survey 2008, Kunttu ja Huttunen University Students (N=5086) Do you feel that you have to use more alcohol than you would like to 14 % now and then 33 % In students parties and gatherings there is an option of non alcoholic drink hardly ever 25 % You stand out if you choose a non alcoholic drink 47 %
6 groups: Challenges of the 1st year Celebrating together Social pressure to drink Arranging parties Tutor an example? Own wellbeing of the tutor or a volunteer
Challenges of the 1st year Studying tecnhique Finding friends Alcohol consumption Economic balance Independency -> Home sickness Daily rythm Enough sleep and rest Is this what I really want?
Celebrating together 1) How can a tutor influence, how those students are thought of beforehand who don t drink so much or don t use alcohol at all, when planning parties? a) How the drinks are served? b) How the party is planned? c) How the party is marketed and advertised? d) What else can you do? 2) Do international students take part to the same parties?
Social pressure to drink Take a look at the results and answers and think together: At a student party, do you feel like you have to use alcohol more than would want to? Are there any non alcoholic drinks on display? Do you stand out more easily if you choose a non alcolholic drink?
Arranging parties 1) Is there a clear difference between culturaland sport events and parties? Sould there be more events with less alcohol involved? 2) In your student organisation, is change allowed when it comes to planning parties and events. Are the traditions too tight?
Tutor an example? Make a test of 10 kysymystä sosiaalisesta vastuusta ja alkoholista Notice that this is not a scientific test and it s only purpose is to make you think about your own alcohol consumption :) 1) Does it matter how the tutor uses alcohol? 2) Should the tutor work as an example? 3) Do you feel that the test is too strict?
Own wellbeing of the tutor or a volunteer Pressure of keeping traditions How to keep the workload bearable and tolerable? Delay of studies
Main points Remind the students to answer the FSHS Health Questionnaire SÄTKY Plan gatherings also to the spring Use our services, contact us early If you are sick, contact us as early as possible
