1 IMPACT Putting Greater to work in a tough economy R E P O R T T O T H E K E N T U C K I A N AW O R K S B O A R D JULY JUNE 2011
2 KentuckianaWorks Job Success Despite a tough economy, KentuckianaWorks programs put 1,677 people to work in FY11. Though we re proud of these numbers, we want to do more to help more adults and youth in need of education and job training. When we have less money, fewer people are able to take advantage of our programs. This year, we operated with $3.1 million less in federal Workforce Investment Act funding than last year. People have been turned away from job training, and four of our One-Stop Career Centers closed this year. In anticipation of $800,000 less in funding next year, KentuckianaWorks along with other workforce boards across the nation continues to face tough decisions as the Board and staff work strategically to maximize scarce dollars and assist the greatest number of customers possible. To continue serving customers, we rolled up our sleeves and began looking for new funding sources. We ve raised almost $1million in new money half for the KentuckianaWorks: SummerWorks2011 program that employed 221 youth and half for the National Fund for Workforce Solutions to fund job development and training in 26 counties along the I-65 corridor. Greater Inc. received a Lumina grant and is working with KentuckianaWorks College Access Center to add an additional counselor who is reaching out to area employers and identifying employees who want to go back to school and become part of the 55,000 Degrees initiative. We don t intend to rest on our job success. We remain committed to helping create a skilled and educated workforce whose qualifications give our region a competitive advantage in becoming the nation s next economic hotspot.
