6 Who is an Athletic Trainer? The certified athletic trainer (ATC) is a highly educated and skilled allied health care professional specializing in the care and prevention of athletic injuries. Who is an Athletic Trainer? The term Athletic Trainer is a source of some confusion in other countries. In recent years there has been a push by some people to change what ATCs are called. What are some other names that may better describe what an ATC does? The first athletic trainers are believed to have worked in the Greek and Roman civilizations. Coaches, physicians and trainers worked to help the athlete reach peak physical performance. Galen was a physician, philosopher, and trainer to gladiators in Ancient Rome. Athletic training as we know today came into existence with the development of intercollegiate sports in the late nineteenth century. These early athletic trainers had no technical training or skills. What do you think they did? The earliest athletic trainers rubbed down athletes and occasionally applied a counterirritant or home remedy. 6
