3 PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACTS OF INJURY Ø Ø Ø Ø 74.41% of athletic trainers agree that athletes are psychologically affected by injury (Clement et al., 2013) 99.7% of sport PTs believe that all athletes are affected by their injuries psychologically (Arvinen-Barrow et al., 2007) 27% of athletes will display clinical levels of emotional disturbance. Ø 72% of athletes that use mental skills tools (imagery/self-talk) perceive it as enhancing their recovery time (Arvinen-Barrow, et al. 2015) Ø Psychological interventions help reduce the prevalence of injury Ø Imagery, relaxation, and goal-setting have a statistically significant (p <.003) effect on athletes post-injury rehabilitation adherence and efficacy (Reese, Pittsinger, and Yang, 2012) Ø Adherence levels are less than 40% (Clement et al., 2013)
