1 02 Runners Raise Funds for Scholarships 03 Faculty Profile: Wendy Aguilar 06 Monument Honors Veterans Grant Allows Students to Train on Virtual Welder Students in Perry Technical Institute s Welding Program are training on a state-of-the-art virtual welding machine thanks to a $50,000 donation from the Walmart Foundation s Washington State Giving Council. Officials from Walmart were on the Perry campus in February to see students demonstrate how to use the welding simulator. This is a valuable piece of equipment because it takes variables such as the sparks and the heat out of the scenario and allows students to focus on the specialized movements and techniques of welding, explains Matt Medearis, head of the Welding Medearis gave an overview of the current demand for welders. You can t single out a few industries that employ welders because they are in demand in so many different fields, he says. Perry added the program in response to the needs of industry. The first class will graduate in September. Due to a high demand for Officials from Walmart visited campus to see students demonstrate how to use the virtual welding machine purchased with a grant from the Walmart Foundation s Washington State Giving Council. Summer 2012 the program, a night class was added in January. The curriculum for the 12-month program includes classroom theory and hands-on instruction in welding, fitting, and related metalworking processes. Students also learn blueprint reading and fabrication. During the course of the program, students have an opportunity to explore a variety of certification options offered by the American Welding Society. The $50,000 grant is the fourth donation to Perry from the Walmart Foundation. Walmart awarded $32,000 to the Automotive Program in 2010, $25,000 to the Electrical Program in 2009, and $10,000 to the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Program in We have found a great partner in Perry Tech, says Richard Gonzales, senior director of global food sourcing for Walmart. We are very proud to support the training that Perry provides. Perry Earns Five-Year Accreditation Perry Technical Institute has received a seal of approval from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges. Perry received the commission s highest approval after the school s on-site evaluation. The commission approved Perry s five-year accreditation with no findings. Every five years, the school applies to the ACCSC to renew its accreditation. After the application is accepted, Perry submits a self-evaluation which summarizes all areas of the school s operation. The commission reviews the self-evaluation and schedules a site visit. A three-member audit team visited the school in September After conducting a thorough examination of each department s operations, records, materials, placement, and student surveys, the audit team had no findings. This is the first time in the history of the school that the audit team has issued no findings, says PTI President Christine Coté. I am extremely proud of our school and all the instructors and staff members whose hard work made this possible. In 1969, Perry Technical Institute became the first private technical school in Washington to be accredited by the ACCSC. 2 Enrollment Reaches New High Perry Technical Institute s enrollment is defying industry trends. Enrollment is up 41% over the past five years, increasing from 434 students in the spring of 2007 to 612 students today. What accounts for this dramatic increase in enrollment? Several factors are at work, but I believe the biggest single factor is Perry s growing reputation for providing viable training paths which lead to excellent careers. Christine Coté Current enrollment statistics show that nine of Perry s 10 training programs are full until To respond to the overwhelming demand for spots in Instrumentation, the program is switching from trimesters to quarters, allowing 44 more students to enroll each year. This is good news to students on the waiting list who are eager to begin their education. High student retention rates, high placement rates after graduation, and high wages for graduates make the Instrumentation Program a very attraction option for incoming students. While Instrumentation has always been one of Perry s most popular programs, programs which have traditionally seen less demand are now filling quickly. The Machine Program is full until June We have seen an overwhelming amount of interest in our new Welding Both this September s class and the January 2013 class are full. To help meet the growing demand, we have added night classes in both the Automotive and Welding Programs. These classes have filled a need among students who work full time, but want to continue their education. While many schools around the country are struggling to fill classes, Perry s enrollment is at an all-time high. This is no accident. The training we offer is top-notch. Our school is student-centered faculty and staff alike are committed to serving the needs of students. We have close relationships with employers which help our students find jobs upon graduation. We continually work with industry to ensure that the curriculum in each training program is in sync with the needs of industry. For all kinds of students those right out of high school, those seeking to upgrade their skills and those reentering the workforce Perry Tech is the solution. The training we offer equips students with the skills most needed in industry and instills in them the work habits that will make them valuable employees. The Ragnar relay is a 200-mile road run that takes place on July 20 and 21. The team consists of 12 members who will each run three legs, as the team makes its way from Blaine, Washington, to the southern tip of Whidbey Island. In addition to the physical commitment, each of the members of Perry s team has committed to raising at least $500 for Perry s scholarship program. One hundred percent of the money raised will be used to provide scholarships to deserving students this fall. Wendy Aguilar: Role Model for Professionalism Wendy Aguilar approaches teaching like training a new employee. Instruction is about more than teaching the curriculum it s about giving students the guidance they need to develop professionalism and positive life skills. Wendy admits that she didn t fully understand this when she joined the Perry faculty in February 2010 as an instructor in the Business & Accounting I knew it would be hard, but I had no idea how to go about it, she says. I guess you could say that I had to demystify teaching. Wendy had a fast learning curve at the end of last year she was named an Outstanding Faculty Member for 2011, an honor voted upon by students. Teaching, according to Wendy, is about getting students to relate with both knowledge and emotion. I am guiding them down a road and every chapter we cover is a new road. In her new role, Wendy has drawn on lessons she learned while serving in the Marine Corps. A native of Healdsburg, California, Wendy enlisted in the Marines right out of high school. That was the best choice I ever made. It made me realize my potential. Being in the Marine Corps was a challenge. In fact, Wendy says she still has nightmares about boot camp! It was a challenge, but I wanted I needed to be held accountable for my actions, she says. Wendy served for two years. She met her husband, Joe, while stationed at Camp Pendleton. After they completed their service, the couple moved back to Healdsburg where Wendy earned a business accounting certificate from Heald Business College. Joe attended the police academy in Burien, Washington, and was hired by the Yakima County Sheriff s Department. After moving to Yakima, Wendy continued her education, earning an associate degree from Yakima Valley Community College and a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Central Washington University. Perry Tech and the Yakima School District are now working hand-in-hand to give high school students a head start on careers in welding. Students who complete the series of welding classes at Eisenhower High School may earn credit toward the first quarter of Perry s Welding Before joining the Perry faculty, Wendy spent 15 years in the business and accounting field, working for Wrap Pack Corporation, the City of Yakima, and Burrows Paper Company. She draws on her work experiences to make her classroom a real-life learning environment. I try to model for them what it means to be a professional in this field. The Marine Corps also taught Wendy the importance of teamwork and she tries to instill this value in her students. I want them to have compassion for one another, to lift one another up instead of putting one another down, she stresses. Wendy is spearheading Perry s outreach to veterans by serving as advisor to the school s Veteran s Alliance. The mission of the Veteran s Alliance is to honor current active duty military and veterans through community service, camaraderie, and support. The group leads local initiatives and activities that display respect and support of active duty military and veterans. Wendy and Joe have two sons, Anthony, 18, and Christopher, 8. Their oldest son, Joseph, who was a student in Perry s Instrumentation Program, died in an accident in Joseph loved Perry. He wanted me to be a part of this school, she says. In addition to her duties at Perry, Wendy is an active member and former president of the Kiwanis Club of Yakima. She is also on the board of directors for Wellness House and serves as treasurer of the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary. The auxiliary was organized to unite and support families of local law enforcement agencies. While her transition into a new profession has been time consuming, Wendy still makes time for running. She has completed three half-marathons over the past two years and is a member of Perry s team for the Ragnar Relay. The last two years have both challenged and inspired the new instructor. This is the hardest job I ve ever had, but it is by far the most rewarding. High School Students Can Now Earn Welding Credits The articulation agreement will give students an incentive to follow their dreams and pursue a career in the welding industry, says Nathan Hull, PTI s dean of education. To be eligible to participate, students must meet the terms outlined in the Articulation Agreement including having a minimum grade point average of

3 January 2012 Jon Baldwin Electrical Jon Baldwin said he s gained as much as he s given tutoring students in Perry s Electrical Tutoring helps classmates who are struggling and it reinforces what Jon has learned. Jon s performance as a student, combined with his willingness to help others, has earned him Student of the Month honors for January. Jon sets an example. He is a silent leader who is always in the background willing to help others without even being asked, says Forrest Buchmann, head of Perry s Electrical Department. Jon entered the program with a strong background in the field. He worked in aviation electronics during his eight years of service in the Navy. Jon, who graduated February, accepted a job as an electrician with the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton. April 2012 Garet Gasseling Business & Accounting Garet Gasseling has always known what education could do for him, but now it s not just about improving his own life it s about making a better life for his family. Garet has proven himself to be well suited for life as a student. He was named April Student of the Month. The Wapato resident enrolled in Perry s Business & Accounting Program after a knee injury left him unable to perform his job for a local document destruction business. Garet soon realized that he needed to further his education in order to get the kind of job he was seeking. He toured the Perry campus and was attracted to the Business & Accounting I am and want to continue to be a father Brody can be proud of. February 2012 Kevin Sak Visual Communication & Graphic Kevin Sak attended three colleges and had 20 years of experience in television production when he decided to enroll in Perry s Visual Communication & Graphic Kevin s positive attitude and motivation to succeed have earned him the honor of being named Student of the Month for February. A native of Toppenish, Kevin studied television production at Spokane Falls Community College, Yakima Valley Community College and Central Washington University. He worked at television stations in Casper, Wyoming, and Reno, Nevada, before returning to Yakima to work for a local station. When he graduates in December, Kevin would like to relocate to the Seattle area and put his skills to work at an advertising agency. May 2012 Ryan Durfey I.T. & Communication Systems Top-notch grades, motivation and a positive attitude combine to make Ryan Durfey the ideal choice for Perry s May Student of the Month. Ryan is self-motivated. He wants to learn, not just to get the grade, but to really understand things, said instructor Josh Phillips. Ryan enrolled in Perry s Information & Communication Systems Program a year after graduating from East Valley High School. I knew Perry Tech would get me a great job, he said. Ryan doesn t graduate until June 21, but his wish has already become reality. He has accepted a position as an inhouse voice and data technician with Continuant in Fife. The company provides maintenance and support services for communication systems. March 2012 James Himrod Welding James Himrod recently earned the distinction of being the first Student of the Month from Perry s newest training program, Welding. James was singled out for showing initiative, responsibility and punctuality. James knows what he wants as a welding career and is not going to let anything or anyone slow him down, says Matt Medearis, department head. A West Valley native, James served in the Army for more than eight years before enrolling at Perry. I knew I needed to get a skill. James was not only the first Student of the Month from Welding he was also in the first group that toured the Welding Welding can take you anywhere in the world that you want to go, he says. June 2012 Anatoly Beregovoy Instrumentation & Industrial Automation Hard work, tenacity and drive: all these can be used to describe Anatoly Beregovoy, Perry Technical Institute s Student of the Month for June. Putting these skills to work as he goes through the Instrumentation & Industrial Automation Program, Anatoly has more than impressed all his instructors. He is on track to graduate with highest honors and holds perfect attendance. Anatoly s main drive is no doubt his family. With two children, ages 3 and 6, he and his wife work hard to make ends meet. Anatoly was born in the Ukraine, and moved to the United States in His main goal now is to finish the program at Perry, and get a job where he can be with his family. It s difficult, but we just go day-by-day, Anatoly said. Hopefully, I ll land a job where we can be under one roof. Veteran s Alliance Raises Funds for Monument Formed last fall, the Veteran s Alliance has taken on its first major project the creation of a veteran s monument on the Perry campus. The monument was inspired by a design created by Bryanna Doonan, a student in Perry s Visual Communication & Graphic Seattle architect Ed Weber volunteered his time to translate the design into an artist s rendering. The monument, to be located in front of the Instrumentation Building, will honor all branches of the military. The Veteran s Alliance is working to raise funds to build the monument. The alliance sponsored its first fund-raising event, Perry s Got Talent, on Friday, June 22. Students, instructors, staff members, and alumni showcased their talents in the show. The mission of the Veteran s Alliance is to honor Perry s current active duty military and veterans through community service, camaraderie, and support. The alliance meets the second Thursday of the month. Current topics of discussion at the meetings include student services, veteran s initiatives, and the monument project. Since its formation, the alliance has grown from a handful of participants to meetings that attract 160 students, explains Wendy Aguilar, the group s advisor. The meetings are open to veterans, dependents of veterans, and students who want to support veterans. There are no membership dues required. We have a strong population of veterans and we feel that we have a responsibility to make their transition as seamless as possible, says Wendy. In addition to the Veteran s Alliance, Perry s services to veterans include the Veteran s Day Assembly; a logo to identify points of service; a veteran s section on the PTI website; veteran-specific resources in the Student Services area; a guided enrollment process; instructors and staff members who are trained on the culture of a veteran; graduation cords for veterans; and speciallydesigned ID badges for veterans. Racheal Zimmer serves as Perry s Veteran/Program Student Specialist. She helps guide veterans through the enrollment process and assists them as they apply for veteran s education benefits. Veterans enrolled at Perry express appreciation for the treatment they receive. Perry Tech is going above and beyond to help veterans feel at home, says Rafael Lopez, a student in the Business & Accounting Program who served in the Marine Corps for seven years. They are creating a family-friendly atmosphere that emulates the service s family atmosphere which helps ease the transition. This coupled with the school s great academic reputation makes Perry Tech an easy choice for veterans. The accreditation process is necessary and worthwhile for the entire school. Receiving this seal of approval offers potential students assurances of the quality of education they will receive at Perry, explains Christine. 4 Perry Grad Returns as Instructor Alan Ballard died July 10, 2011, at the age of 25. He served in the Army National Guard before graduating from the Instrumentation Program in He was working for Catalyst Paper Company in Snowflake, Arizona, at the time of his death. Gayle Barry, a 2010 Medical Office Administration graduate, died of cancer on June 25, 2011, in Ellensburg. After graduating from Perry, Gayle worked as a medical insurance billing specialist at Valley Vision Associates in Ellensburg. HVAC graduate Walter Dale Bolling died on April 26 in Yakima. He was 80. He opened Refrigeration Sales & Service in Yakima in 1960 and operated the business until it sold. He worked for several refrigeration companies until he retired in Electrical graduate Marvin Eberle died on November 6, 2011, in Grandview at the age of 80. He worked in Prosser and at Hanford before moving to Alaska to work on the Alaska Pipeline. He returned in Grandview in A 1986 Instrumentation graduate, Daniel Funk died on September 25, 2011, in Astoria, Oregon. He worked at a steel mill in California and then as an instrument mechanic at Wauna Mill, where he was employed for 23 years. James Daniel McCort died on Thursday, September 29, while visiting family in Bigfork, Montana. Danny retired from the construction industry in 1989 and attended Perry, graduating from the HVAC Program in He lived in Othello. Gordon Dale McGowan, a 1990 Graphics graduate, died on August 10, 2011 in Inchelium, Washington. He was 67. A 2005 Telecommunications graduate, Rick Allen Mortenson died on February 19 at the age of 36. He worked in the Portland shipyards as an IT consultant and moved to Sydney, Australia, to work for the Attorney General s Office. He returned to the United States in 2007 and continued to work in the computer industry. William BJ Mullen died on January 29. A 1977 Machine graduate, William worked as a machinist at a salmon cannery in Alaska, for the USDA Forest Service and as a ski instructor and ski school director at White Pass. He was 67. Leonard Sharkey Hawk, 79, died November 27, 2011, in Yakima. He graduated from the Heavy Equipment Program in He worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a ditch rider and heavy equipment operator for 20 years and then worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Yakama Nation for 10 years. He was also a commercial fisherman. Electrical graduate Vernon Kirstein died November 28, 2011, in Bellevue at the age of 87. He worked as an electrician at Hanford for 32 years. Ivan Pacheco was killed in an automobile accident in Paterson on March 15. Pacheco, 22, was a 2009 Automotive graduate. John Koenes first day on the job at Perry Tech was a homecoming of sorts. The Perry alumnus is teaching the first section of the Instrumentation & Industrial Automation John was born in California and moved to Washington John Koenes as a child. John worked for Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation in Missoula, Montana, for 17 years after graduating from the Instrumentation Program in He then spent three years with CH2M HILL in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and three years working as electrician in Western and Eastern Washington. The new instructor says he welcomed the chance to teach because it allows him to work closer to home. Perry s four-day-a-week schedule gives him more leisure time to enjoy his favorite pastimes, hunting and fishing. John and his wife, Lana, have three grown sons, Brandon, Jacob and Steven. Mike Trammell presents a check for the barbecue to Christine Coté and Erin Fishburn. Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company recently committed $25,000 to fund the construction of a barbecue on the Perry campus. The barbecue, located on the grounds behind the main office, will serve as a gathering place for students, staff and faculty members for many years to come. Part of Perry s history bricks and doors from the boiler building which was demolished last summer will be used in the construction of the barbecue. Grads Encourage Women to Take Less Traditional Paths It s a phrase Melissa Ivy has heard exclaimed more than once when she arrives to fix someone s computer: I thought you d be a guy. The 23-year-old graduate of Perry s Information & Communications Systems Program isn t taken back. In fact, she sees it as a challenge. It makes me want to prove to them that I can do it, says Melissa, an instrument specialist at Hanford s Mission Support Alliance. Melissa was one of four Perry grads who shared their stories at the 2012 Women in Day held on February 9. Joining Melissa was Norma Jean Sutton, a 1990 Instrumentation graduate; Maria Werremeyer, a 1999 Electrical graduate; and Jeanine Benoit, a 2002 Telecommunications graduate. All four speakers described how they were attracted to their fields and encouraged the women present to have the courage to take a less traditional career path. Maria was a 26-year-old mother of three small children when she decided to enroll in Perry s Electrical I was struggling. Not everyone supported Maria s decision. Family members questioned why she would want to enter a male-dominated field. They worried about me and wondered why I would want to do such a thing, she says. Maria stresses that women who want to pursue a non-traditional career will have to earn their way. Guys will call you names like Honey or Sweetie, she says. I told them, My name is Maria and you ll call me that or you ll talk to my boss. Speaking at the 2012 Women in Day were, left to right, Melissa Ivy, Maria Werremeyer, Norma Jean Sutton, and Jeanine Benoit. After nine years in the field, Maria joined Perry s Electrical faculty in 2008, and now teaches the fourth section of the program. Not putting up with negative comments and concentrating on doing your job well go a long way toward earning respect from male co-workers. Melissa and Maria agree that women bring qualities to their work that men do not possess. As a woman, you have the finesse you need to talk to that customer, Maria explains. As an instrument calibration specialist at Energy Northwest at Hanford, Norma Jean is also accustomed to being the only woman on the crew. If you have a good attitude, and you work hard, you ll soon be accepted, she says. Jeanine enrolled In Perry s Telecommunications Program after working for 21 years in her family s grocery store. I was the only women in a class of 24 and most of the students were half my age. I had the ladies room all to myself, she says, laughing. At first, the work was challenging, but soon it started to make sense. Failure was not an option; I finished at the top of my class. Jeanine returned to Perry in 2005, first as an instructor at a high school satellite program and then as Perry s Systems Administrator. She will soon be moving back into the class to teach the first section of the program she completed (now called Information & Communication Systems). I m here to tell you that Perry works, she stresses. Dustin Berg, a 2010 Graphics graduate, works as a Graphic Artist for Liberty Bottleworks in Union Gap. A 2006 Graphics graduate, John Cope serves as regional graphics coordinator for Longview Fibre in Yakima. Dave Dey, a 2006 Instrumentation graduate, was recently promoted to Maintenance Supervisor at Agrium Fertilizer in Kennewick. The work of Graphics graduate James Green was showcased at the Meadows Gallery on the campus of Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, Alabama. Marie Hiemstra, a 2009 Graphics graduate, is a graphic designer/web designer with Pixelsoft Films in Kennewick. A 2009 HVAC/R graduate, Justin Marshall is working as a pipefitter at the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant through Local 598 in Pasco. Tony Ray Mosbrucker, a 1988 Electrical graduate, is an electrician at Frito Lay Bakery s Maintenance Department in Perry, Georgia. Bruce Prichard recently received the title of Certified Master HVACR Educator by HVAC Excellence, a non-profit organization which serves the HVAC industry through accreditation, assessments, certification, credentialing, and professional development. A 1984 HVAC/R graduate, Bruce is an HVAC instructor at Charter College in Pasco. A 1995 Instrumentation graduate, Ross Read serves as operations manager of Satsop Business Park, a 1,700-acre mixed-use business park in Grays Harbor. Larry Rose, a 1999 Instrumentation graduate, has worked for Kimberly-Clark in Everett for seven years. He lives in Arlington. A 2009 Graphics graduate, Nick Shipley is working as a graphic artist for Liberty Bottleworks in Union Gap. Burke Smith is working at Kimberly-Clark in Everett. He is a 1989 Instrumentation graduate. LAP graduate Stephanie Smith, who was originally hired as a temporary staff member, was recently made a permanent staff member at the Law Offices of Stephenson, Acquisto and Colman in Burbank, California. Steven Smith is working as an electrician for Simpson Lumber in Shelton. He graduated from the Electrical Program in The work of Haley (Whitmire) Sutton was featured in Faces Behind the Scenes, a feature article in the National Home Infusion Association s newsletter. Haley, a 2010 graduate of the Medical Office Administration & Coding Program, is an Intake Coordinator at Yakima Valley Memorial Infusion Care. A 2007 Instrumentation graduate, Tiffany Thrasher is an instrument and calibration technician for NACCO Materials Handling Group in Fairview, Oregon. She lives in Vancouver. Steve Vandervate is project designer/art director for Hot Wheels Graphics. A 1987 Graphics graduate, Steve lives in Simi Valley, California. A 2000 Telecommunications graduate, Chris Warrington recently passed the Registered Communication Distribution Design courses at the BICSI winter conference. Chris lives in Dallas, Texas, and works for Acuity, an independent IT consulting firm. Josh Wesselius, a 2001 Telecommunications graduate, is a regional sales manager for Noel Communications, in Yakima.
